He was a terachad. I want to share the highlights of that, because some of the coolest parts of the story get left out: The crowd was clamoring for the assassin to be hanged, TR told them to _not_ harm the would-be assassin, tried to talk to the guy (who was unresponsive), and then told officers to not harm him. He then ignored people telling him to go to the hospital and went to the hall where he gave the speech. He started his speech with "The bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech. But I will try my best." and showing off the bullet wound, then he talked for an hour (a pretty great speech too, look it up). Multiple times people said (on-stage and off-stage) that they want him to be seated, and he refused. Also, doctors wanted him to stop talking a couple times, and he refused. When he went to the hospital, the superintendent was pretty impressed by his -rizz- demeanor: "Col. Roosevelt is the most unusual patient who ever was ministered to in [the hospital], in that he was absolutely calm and unperturbed, and influenced every one about him to be so..." "Col. Roosevelt had not been in the hospital fifteen minutes before every one he came in contact with was willing to swear allegiance to the Bull Moose party ... He was so friendly and cordial, so natural and free, so happy and genial and so inclined to 'jolly' us all that we felt on terms of intimate friendship with him almost immediately..." Side note - when he was shot he wasn't at the hall he gave the speech yet. IMO that's even cooler - continuing a speech is easier than actively choosing to give it over going to the hospital.
