Atlantic Salmon & Trout fishing on Torch Lake begins shortly after ice out when the smelt and other baitfish look for warmer water to begin their spawning migration. The presence of the baitfish triggers the Atlantic Salmon, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Lake Trout to hunt the shallow water making a nearshore fishery that can be trolled with traditional trolling gear. As the spring progresses the Atlantic’s make their way up the Clam River. The Clam River is very short but, has a pretty good current that can be followed a long way out in the Torch Lake estuary. Float fishing with a center pin or a spinning rod with artificial and live bait will give you your best shot at one of the most prized sport fish in Michigan.
As the summer heats up the surface temperature to the mid 70’s the Atlantic Salmon move offshore and can be caught in the top 40 ft of the water column. Learn how to adjust tradition Great Lakes big water trolling techniques to Torch Lake using substantially lighter gear with spoons, crankbaits and live bait. While fishing Torch Lake for Atlantic Salmon it is not uncommon to catch Brown Trout, Lake Trout and Rainbow Trout. This trip is a favorite of Fish With Jim Outfitters.
