This was a great idea for a video! It showed all things people can go to their garden center right now and find. I do most of my annuals from seed (marigolds, zinnias, sunflowers, ageratum, gomphrena, sunstorm vinca, celosia, etc.) in my 7a Virginia garden. The only ones I buy are Madness petunias (the only variety I've found that can take the summer here on my lazy watering schedule). I also picked up a zonal geranium, a browalia, and a torenia while I was there.

Hi Jim. Thank you for making this video. A good percentage of my garden is woodland shade and many of these plants would do great in that setting. Have you ever collected the seeds from a wax begonia? They are like dust! I've grown wax begonia from seed and it's so worth it. Last year I ended up with hundreds of wax begonia plants and it was so beautiful! Happy gardening! 🌻

I love dichondra. I planted it as a spiller in my container. I've since discovered that it must be primo nesting material as the backyard birds have been removing all the hanging pieces and I'm left with more of a filler instead of a spiller! That's okay. It will grow back. The birds are always in the yard eating bugs, so they're helping me out too. A small birdbath positioned under a mature dogwood tree is what attracts tons of birds to my yard. I'm in Georgia in Zone 7B.

I so appreciate you always thinking about covering shade plants - annuals and perennials, shrubs and trees. Our trees just keep growing and there’s only so much trimming our landscapers can do without risking their lives. And I wouldn’t want them to. So we just have to live with full shade and dappled sun. Before your videos and those of Jenny @CreeksideNursery and @LindaVater, I’ve struggled to figure out what I can plant in my garden beds and under tree canopies. Thank you for thinking of us with shade gardens and how we can add color and substance.

Last year we had a begonia on a table outside. Anyway something happened to the table so we stuck it in the ground on the east side of the house and it did very well there. We are in 8A outside of Columbia, SC and when fall came along with the unusual cold of last winter it died off. We thought it was the end of the story. Not so! It has come back and already has a bloom. Is this normal?

Torenia: beautiful for a couple of days until the rabbits find them. I tried them for the first time last year; put in the landscape and when I saw them eaten attempted to move them to a container, but then discovered a rabbit right near my front door up on its hind legs happily munching away. Maybe I'll try again in a hanging basket.

Torenia also pulls in a lot of bees. They sleep in those flowers. But deer resistant? I really question that. I live with a ton of deer and they munch them for sure. So I grown in pots in fences yard. Rabbits eat them too. Deer and rabbits also eat my begonias. It’s not their favorite but come late summer when it’s hot and dry and options are limited those begonias or nubs.
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam Жыл бұрын
This is why I have dropped talking about deer resistant plants for the most part. I was actually thinking about dropping it while I was editing this one, because the growing herds of them seem to make them at least sample everything. Of course rabbits never read the deer resistant list
@bohnnco
@bohnnco Жыл бұрын
@@JimPutnam Well actually I see it listed as deer resistant everywhere online now. Interesting! Maybe it’s just chapel hill deer. You’re probably good saying it is with the caveat that when hungry all bets are off. This morning having coffee I watched a rabbit eating the new growth off of a Nellie Stevens holly hedge. She got on her hind legs and snipped off the fresh leaves. Who knew 😊
