Predator control is an integral part of managing your deer herd. Most land managers concentrate their trapping efforts through the winter months. The summer months are often looked upon as unproductive for trapping coyotes, but where legal, the summer months offer a great opportunity for successful trapping that is very beneficial to your deer herd.
This time of year, does have dropped their fawns and they're spending time in open areas and food plots. Coyotes, being the advantageous predators that they are, know to spend time in these areas to target young fawns. To avoid over exertion in the heat, coyotes will lay in cover near food plots and logging roads in wait for whitetails. These areas are the locations trappers need to concentrate on during the summer months. By spending time walking or driving, you can locate tracks that are sure signs of a nearby coyote.
Most of the trapping techniques used during the winter months apply during the summer, but by changing locations and baits you can increase your odds of a successful trapping set. Instead of a meat based bait that is preserved, use a bait/lure that is fresh. Casey typically uses Proline Road Runner because it will last longer when applied to the dirt holes of his sets. Rather than having to freshen a trapping set up every 2-3 days, he can leave it be for a few days longer.
The summer months only offer an opportunity for coyote trapping which helps with fawn recruitment, but doesn't solve the problem of non-target animals stealing and contaminating supplemental feed for your deer. The way to solve this issue is to utilize a feeder that is hog and coon proof. The feeders designed and sold by Steel Outdoors are constructed in this way. The legs are in the middle of the feeder to eliminate coons from being able to climb and have access to the feed spout. For larger more nimble racoons, a baffle or hinge is on the exterior of the spout to keep them from reaching around or jumping up. The height of the feeder also discourages hogs from eating and contaminating the feed as they do in trough style feeders. This design gives deer access to 100% of the supplemental feed of your choosing by eliminating competition from non-target animals and contamination.

We're trapping during the summer months to help control predator populations that hurt fawn recruitment numbers. The furs are far from prime during this time of the year, but our goal at this time is for controlling numbers, not for furs. We do the bulk of our predator trapping and hunting during the winter months when furs are prime.

Urban Hunterz they also need learn about balance of wildlife populations and supporting cover and food sources. I recently talked to a man who lost 4 thoroughbred horses to coyotes do to no predator control in the area until he hired someone to come in and take some out . they removed 48 coyotes in two weeks on 20 acres that backed up to a hunting lease. so if they were that abundant there, how many were there in a five mile radius ? I wonder if these fools would have the same attitude if their cat dog or kid got chewed up by one .

And dont talke about wildlife populations please dis man is destroying the population of coyotes And they might be invasive but i dont give a fuck. Poeple that think there doing the right thing by killing an animal no metter what size need to be charged. And as I told you dis man needs to be charged these poeple know Nothing about nature. And if I would See a trap like this ever. I wil destroy it And release the animal and keep searching for more. I dont think anyone has the right to fucking kill an animal for fun. And now I think its about time these poeple get what they deserve. Let me be clear I WIL NO LONGER SIT HERE AND DO NOTHING WILE ANIMALS LIKE COYETE,S ARE BEAING KILLED. I suppose its better for them to get mangled on the road, to die of mange, or starvation, yes? If you spent any time in the bush, you would know that the slight distress of being caught, and dispatched swiftly is much more humane than any of those... and then there is the matter of the prey animals they eat, alive, that suffer through THAT... Please, get a grip.

I have a quick question. Do you have any clue as to how predator control, like this, effects the deep populations within your area? Let me explain the scenario that you have created in the simplest way possible. It may seem like the correlation between coyotes and deer is one of "less coyotes = more deer" but in reality, mass predator trappings and exterminations have the opposite effect. If you remove the top predator from the food chain, everything underneath falls apart. Sure you may see a boom in the deer populations within the first few years following the mass removal of the coyote, but soon the habitat of the deer will simply become depleted because of the overgrazing and overbrowsing being done by your new huge deer population. Once the habitat fails, your deer populations will plummet, leaving you with a large contingency of starving deer. After the deer begin to starve, they will die. The environment that they live in will be too depleted to save them, and you will actually experience lower deer populations. My suggestion to you is, actually read a fucking book on wildlife management. Especially, find one on the effects that the reintroduction of the gray wolf has had on elk populations within Yellow Stone National Park. Your way of managing deer populations is embarrassing and to be wholly honest, archaic and idiotic.

Casey Smith. trapping isn't a one sided approach. trappers are well aware of wildlife thresholds. and as stewards of the land we aim to keep this equilibrium in balance. with that said, we know having a presence of predator . is beneficial in controlling disease thru rodents, but leave predation unchecked, coyote can and will eventually bring parasites and interspersed disease like mange and rabies.
@raygivens9437
@raygivens9437 8 жыл бұрын
Casey Smith if you knew what you were talking about you would be dangerous , coyotes are invasive to my area , they have migrated from the west because of no natural predators and unchecked breeding . we control the deer by game management and legal harvest , no help needed from coyotes , the population control of deer is done solely by hunters , without that deer would starve , so the coyotes are only natural predators in the southwest . as they migrate they will be considered a neusance and adverse do deer populations and will be exterminated.
@crawdad9533

Casey Smith you don't so much sound like you know what you're talking about as you just sound butthurt. Look at the population of coyotes vs deer. What you're saying is correct, only to a certain extent. Your ignorance of the local population of deer

How do you stop incidental trapping of wildlife such as deer ?
@TheOldGunsmith58
@TheOldGunsmith58 9 жыл бұрын
Bill Hahn as for deer the hoof design lets them pull out of a foothold trap. the same for most hooved animals such as horses and sheep. horses would have to be in an extremely large trap to even get caught in one enough to close on a hoof at all. bigger than is currently legal. traps are designed for furbearers such as bobcat coyote beaver mink weasel opossum etc. and are sized as such . current regulations where im at require me to check my traps every 24 hrs when set so no animals are going to starve to death while waiting to be released. peoples dogs are generally illegally in legal trapping areas like national forests without a leash which they aren't supposed to be . and I can very teach any one how to open a foothold trap in a matter of a few seconds. so the opinions are mostly nothing but that opinions . but thank you for being one of the few open minded enough to ask.
