Several dozen wedding balloons were picked up off Weekapaug Beach up here in Rhode Island two weeks ago. With the prevailing southwest winds, they may have come over from Long Island, perhaps from the same source as those John and company fished out. There should be a law against releasing such balloons. Littering at its worst. And those paper bags hot air balloons with little candles burning in them! We had one come down in our yard during a very hot dry spell. Luckily no brush fire started from it.

@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
We won't change the butt. There's not much exposed blank there. The grip at the base of the butt is flat on the sides and long enough to brace against the forearm bottom. If you can handle one, I think you won't have a problem with this split grip.

@savvy18563 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSkinnerFishing "Optimum" might be a relative term determined by the stature of the individual fisherman. But I understand. Taller guys tend to have a preference for the longer rods. What makes this dark matter rod different from the nexus?
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
First is that you don't need to take a hacksaw to it and replace the tip. The Nexus rods I used the last couple of years were 7-footers cut down to 6'8''. The slightly shorter rod is easier to jig and allows action to be put on heavier bucktails. Uncut, the tip was too soft IMO for the heavier jigs. If you then compare the cut 6'8'' Nexus to this 6'8'' Dark Matter rod, you'll find that the Dark Matter rod bends in the middle, vs the Nexus that bends mostly near the top of the rod. That Dark Matter parabolic bend allows for bouncing heavier jigs, while still being nice for fishing jigs down to 1.5 ounces. When you have a fish on the Dark Matter, the rod is like a shock absorber because with the bend in the middle you're using the whole rod. Nexus rods are good too, but this was designed to address the things I just mentioned.

Why two jigs? For weight? I have always found that a single jig is all that is needed (yes, real deer hair "bucktail")...that or live bait. Cut bait just messes up the boat. Those aren't even particularly big fish. When they are biting like that you can catch them on gold hooks and pork rinds.
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately they rarely bite like that. Two offerings gives higher visibility and offers fish a choice. Also, if one Gulp gets cut off by a fish, fluke or otherwise, there's still a good one in the water.

@@JohnSkinnerFishing so I really like your videos and want to get a new fluke rod and reel. I’ll be using it for ocean fluking and a trip up to Mass to fish Nantucket shoals on the Angler. Last year on this trip at one point I was using 24oz lead so that’s one thing I need to consider. What do you recommend?
@JohnSkinnerFishing3 жыл бұрын
I really can't advise you intelligently on fishing 1.5 pounds of lead. One of the guys we fish with (Sweeney) went there last year and fished our standard fluke gear like is used in this video and cleaned up with fish to 11 pounds. He described it as "easier than Montauk". I understand that is not always the case. If I was going there I'd bring the outfit used in this video, and one generic heavier rod that could comfortably fish 1 to 2 pounds of weight. I guess I'd rig that heavier one with 30# line, but I have to wonder if the use of thicker line is what's causing the need for so much lead in the first place. I've not fished there, so I can't really say.

Hey John I'm very concerned about the striped bass population, every night I go out and fish and poachers slaughter as many as they can. I don't think amendment 7 will be enough to help stripers in the near future. Have you noticed any decline in fishing over time? The only solution I can see is have coastal states increase their funding into environmental police and put a memorandum on stripers for at least 5 years. Do you have any connections you can speak to to try to get the Atlantic fisheries commission to step it up and do what is necessary?
