Couple of ideas popped into my head Rachel, 1) Could you use a reflective emergency blanket over the tubs at night to keep heat in? 2) or bubble wrap? 3) is a small heater dropped into tubs overnight a possibility?, 4) How about "harvesting a few fry as you go through the season? perhaps you could minimise losses. I have taken about 20 WCMM out of my tub so far, and moved them into small tanks in my greenhouse. Thanks for all of you advice, your 101 book is great, by the way.

Those bugs are month old dragonfly larvae. Good thing you took them out as they can stay in their larval stage for years and will eat fry and even adults as they grow.

Thanks for all of the tips. Emptied my tubs last friday up in Maine. Managed to get some fry from a cpd pond but nothing in my tub with white clouds. Actually found a very large dragon fly larvae in the cpd tub but it did not get any of my adults. Will probably put a net over the tubs next year.

These beetles are actually the larvae of dragonflies and they do eat small fish... Maybe you could put a net over your tubs, that should stop the adults from laying their eggs into the water and on your plants :)
@RachelOLeary7 жыл бұрын
+Jannis Targaryen they were waybsmaller than dragongly larvae so I am fairly certain they were damselfly
@jannish.28077 жыл бұрын
Rachel O'leary I'm really not sure, most damselfly larvae have a different shape and yours look a lot like a species of dragonfly that I know. Sadly doesn't chance the fact that either one will eat small fry, hopefully they dont bother you next time
@iian_7 жыл бұрын
I do believe both eat small fish but i could be incorrect. A net would solve this "problem" though as the fly needs to go under the water and deposit eggs inside plants after they have cut a small opening in the stem.

I saw someone else mention dragon fly larvae for those carnivorous bugs. If you want a certain "size" bugs to get in as food , and since a lot of flying dragonflies are a bit bigger, I wonder if a net with a certain size hole would help keep the dragonflies out? Very cool videos as always.

That's a bummer, but at least you mostly caught it in time. Sadly this year of summer tubbing has been down right terrible for me. I have a 20 gal. tank outside that I've been growing out koi fry...(very unexpected!) and our weather has been getting really hot again! 100's-110's and I had a hard time keeping the water from getting too warm. I also had some water plants in the tank that I was growing out to put in my indoor 55 gal. So! I've been transferring the babies into the 55gal inside where I can regulate the temperature better. To my surprise I had brand new babie fry.....I think they are giant danio fry....I think, in the tank so I had to bring in the plants from the 20 gal for hiding places for everyone. Geeezzzz! No parasites thank heaven! Just a lot of pond snails that the koi will eat when they get bigger. They are about 1/4" to 1" long at this point. I have about 20 of them. No color yet they are only a month old. When big enough they will go out into the koi pool, it's 1800 gals. So I've been very interested in your outside tubs! We've had to treat for excess algae in it, and now at least we can see the koi! Yay! Plants in there consist of water hyacinth, pennywort, a pathos plant, and I'm trying to root in the water...(for ground planting) some lemon tree branches, grapevines, and some roses. They will get put into a potatoe in a couple of days and put in the ground. Do you think (I so value your help!) I'm doing this ok? I know I need more real water plants to get rid of the algae, but we work with what we have. Wish I could show you my filtration! Kind of ingenious I think.
@jeremymorrell46827 жыл бұрын
Hey Rachel, if your water hyacinth hasn't dried out yet, they're actually edible! I grow mine out for food every summer. Take the flat leaf pads and cut them all into thin strips, then boil just boil them for a while (15-20 minutes), then strain. You have to cook them for a long time since they start out pretty tough with their waxy coating and strong fibers, but after cooking they tenderize enough to be palatable while still retaining a satisfying bite to them. I think they make delicious as a side dish with olive oil, salt and pepper. I try to grow enough out in my pond to have a few good meals every summer. The flowers are also edible raw, and I've heard you can deep fry the floats like pork rinds, although I've never had any success with that. If you have the time, try it out!

@Rachael O'Leary: I really do concur with the others, I think these were Dragonfly Nymph's. They are dangerous to fish, and I *DO* think Net Cages surrounding the tubs, while allowing the overhanging plants to thrive would be your best option. You might also have to have the Bee Keeper come over for a few hours a day, to help pollinate the plants putting some under the net cages. Best suggestion I can make, right now... :\

@andrewmarcus2497 жыл бұрын
Damselfly larvae have three gills at the back that look like fins and can be green clear or brown. Dragonfly larvae are distinctly black when they are small and don't have gills at the back. I have both in my pond. However i could be wrong or you might have different species around your area.
@RachelOLeary7 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Marcus these were light brown in person
@andrewmarcus2497 жыл бұрын
I'm still pretty sure that those are dragonfly larvae but what you should do is get one and grow it out to see if you get a dragonfly or damselfly so that you can know for sure. Dragonfly larvae will cause much greater problems then damselfly larvae. Damselfly larvae will mostly eat very small things like baby scuds, cyclops, copepods, and daphnia, depending on the size. (not to say that they won't eat the occasional fry) Dragonfly larvae are nasty they can eat all the aforementioned things plus fry and could probably eat fish much bigger than a fry. If at some point you set up a tub just for enjoyment and not for breeding you should leave the bugs in so you can get damselflies and dragonflies flying around. They are quite enjoyable to watch.

Hello from India. Firstly, a huge fan of yours. Learnt a lot from your videos and looking forward to more. Just something off the top of my head- how about keeping native predatory fishes in the bigger tubs during winter, perhaps food fish. They can feed on insects and any leftover fry (which will probably die anyway), with occassional supplementary feeding and can be harvested later. No experience of very low temps, so you might find problems that didn't occur to me.

Diving beetles can be a problem in certain areas and they are worse.They can live through dipping plants because some species lay eggs inside plant stems. There are species native to the US but not all 4 to 6000 species. The stages, nymph and larvae look quite different but both are predators. BEWARE of the plants especially of any were imported. Plants would be a likely suspect especially if not all the tanks were heavily infested. Of course it may not be diving beetles, I couldn't tell much from the image. Great looking fish!
@RachelOLeary7 жыл бұрын

Bugs are diverse and there have been scientific suggestions that not even half have been catalogued and identified. You may not find the exact bug but the family identification might help. Knowing the vector of infestation might provide some relief. Time for a flow chart and timeline... LOL.
