Good for you on taking the initiative on upgrading your filtration system. I did notice a couple of things that could help your setup. 1. I noticed that you bought regular reduction couplers from Lowes. Intex makes adapters for this same purpose. Adapters from a 1.25" (clamp style) to a 1.50" threaded for the plunger valves or the hoses from Intex. They're called " Intex Hose Conversion Adapter B Kit.. Replacement part 25009. Sold @ Amazon for $13 (pair). This allows the hoses and valves from Intex to screw right in. Installing plunger valves, allows you to close off both lines to the pool for proper pump cleaning & maintenance. 2. I strongly recommend that you remove the cartridge filter as well. This creates additional and unnecessary resistance to the pump thus reducing flow performance. With the sand filtration media designed for this unit, it should be enough to maintain your pool clean. Besides I'm sure it also creates extra work to clean the cartridge and sand unit.

This is my 3rd season with this set up and I haven't had any issues with pump, pressure reading or water flow so I think I'll stick with what I'm doing. Everything you're suggesting, althought good is the very reason I set it up the way I did...simple and easy, yet serves the purpose. Cleaning has never been an issue either. The aquabot handles that and keeping the chemicals balanced pretty much handles the rest. It's been four seasons with the pool and three with the filter and I don't have any complaints or issues. I'm sure your suggestions will be helpful to those in search of additional information about converting to a sand filter though, so thanks👍🏾 Happy swimming!🙂

This post is 99.9% perfect! My ONLY suggestion would be to turn your return from straight up to the side a bit. You want the water to circulate to drive debris to the skimmer. I like your idea of aerating the water, but circulation, in my opinion, is more important. But I think you have enough force from that return to do both. Great post though! I found it very helpful.

If you do this upgrade you need to remove the old filter. Keeping that in there adds a lot of stress on the sand filter pumps and will over all decrease the life span of your pump. Besides that the sand filter will do the job well. No need to keep carriages in there.

The original pump in the skimmer doesn’t restrict the flow? I would think it would. Summer Waves sells a round plate that fills the hole once you remove the pump for conversion to a sand filter.
@justthegirlnextdoor96353 жыл бұрын
Well in MY experience it did not. If it did it, was so subtle that I couldn't detect a difference. Getting a good sand filter may have made a difference but It's been set up like this for four summers thus far with no issues. So it works for me.

I tried it without the pump first but sealing is bad on the skimmer bottom if you use the vacuum. So I put the pump back like in your setup and don't see a an issue with pulling the water thru the pump and I can use the cartridge filter too.
@justthegirlnextdoor96354 жыл бұрын
Yep, I remember someone asked me if it restricted the water flow but if you think about it, it's actually still following the same flow as it did with the original pump. Only difference is instead of it going into the pool it goes through the sand filter first. I've never had an issue and this is my third season with the sand filter.
@HostageDK4 жыл бұрын
I was wondering did you connect anything or looked into how to connect another hose for a vacuum? Looks to be the same pool I have and the intex pump i purchased was with the salt water system added thats really the only difference. I was trying to think of a way to do it but i'm lost lol
@justthegirlnextdoor96354 жыл бұрын
Yes I came to KZbin to get some ideas, but honestly some of those videos were far too complicated for me. I did come across one that was a little more simplistic. All I wanted to do was be able to connect the sand filter without having to route a lot of piping and valves so I brought the size connectors that were mentioned and with a tweak here and there ...the connectors were all I needed.

@@508diva no I didn't remove any part of the motor. I left everything in place so that I could still use the cylinder cartridges since I had a lot of them. Leaving it in place didn't restrict the water flow or anything because it goes into the sand filter from there and then back into the pool, so I opted to just leave it in place.

It's not really Walmart. This COVID19 situation has affected the majority of commercial manufacturing and it has also motivated consumers to invest in personal home entertainment, due to the isolation. Anything outdoors are depleted. For example the bicycle section was one that you couldn't even walk by from so many bikes laying around. Now they're completely empty. The Intex pool pump I have, (2,800GPH model) used to sell for $250 last Nov. Now you can't find them for under $400 if you can find them.

What is the name of the connector you used?

It's just a rubber connector. Don't recall any specific brand name. If you go to any home improvement store in the section where there are hoses, pipes, etc...you should be able to find them. The size I used is in the comments at the top of this post.

Think I have a big problem, inasmuch as my pool is already filled. Is it possible to do this switch with a full pool?
@justthegirlnextdoor96354 жыл бұрын
If you dont have anything to block the inlet, all you need to do is lower the water below the inlet to keep more from running in while you're working on it. Once done, just fl your pool back to the water level.
@mandiebabezz4 жыл бұрын
So your water flow doesn’t get restricted from the old pump motor? I seen another video of someone turning the old pump on the inside that way it had more flow?
@justthegirlnextdoor96354 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't get restricted. It still follows the same flow as if I were using the old pump. The only difference is instead of it going through the old pump and directly back into the pool, it goes through the old pump housing, into the sand filter then back into the pool. The motor isn't blocking anything which is why I chose to leave it in.

Never experienced anything like that so I'm not sure what to think. Are you talking about the pump that came with the pool or do you have a sand filter pump? Either way I can't figure out why anything would overflow when the pump is off. What about your water level? Could your water level perhaps be too high?

How do you clean out the skimmer basket in the new pump?
@justthegirlnextdoor96354 жыл бұрын
Turn the pump off, unscrew the lid and pull the basket out. You will have to block the inlet briefly to obstruct the water flow. The water will flow once you take the lid off. It's pretty self explanatory unless you have a different model or something. It might be a good idea to refer to your owner's manual that came with your pump.
