I tried this and I could not get the effect to happen. I did everything you did and nothing else multiple times. Is there any chance you have a setting enabled that I don't? Really not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Mt. Mograph I did do that but I run Windows and after effects does not want to open it because you used MacOS. That's fine though I probably made a silly mistake. But thanks anyway! Edit: I discovered the problem, I neglected to "move all attributes into a new composition" when precomposing.
