I have the feeling that GM decision makers can tell you where the best golf courses are, where to go for a 3 hour lunch, which people you need to cozy up to to keep your job, how to be a yes man or woman, but they don’t seem to know and/or care much about their product. Thankfully there are guys like this within a computers reach. Thank you.

Nice simple explanation and tempered to "soften" just how much trouble the system can create - simply put, several issues can trash an engine. Unfortunately the system and its unique parts are more complicated than needed to be explained and require diligent attention to maintenance to reduce the possibility of a failure. Anyone researching just exactly how the entire system functions will find out just how mechanically "busy" the extra functions required are, and see all the areas for potential failure. So far, mine ('07 5.3 Silverado) has functioned well, but is annoying. On flat level roads there's no sign when it is engaged except that because I have modified exhaust - the truck Sounds like it's missing. The annoying part is when the road is at all hilly and it's below expressway speeds. The system "hunts" turning on and off frequently, and the truck feels lazy going up a longer hill until the system Stays off. Best to disable it and avoid possibly destroying an engine.

If you place the automatic transmission gear selector in the manual position and select the highest gear of 5 of a six speed, it will not go into AFM mode. Great for around town or hilly terrain. Kind of APITA to remember to do it each time but it works. Get on the open highway and let it go into AFM and save a little fuel.

Within a few months the lifter noise became quieter and intermittent until it totally disappeared and has never came back after over 65k miles. I got lucky lol. I purchased a new 2019 Silverado 1500 LD with a 5.3L, L83 engine. I've seen a couple of videos that talk about disabling the AFM by putting the gear selector in "L" (manual) and setting it to "5" so it won't go into overdrive and activate the AFM. This works but you have to manually select "5" each time after you put the selector in "Park". I drove it this way for a while and didn't notice any issues. I ended up purchasing a used Range Technology AFM/DFM disabler dongle and have been using it since 6/23. I've driven close to 20K miles with it and have had no issues. My truck used to get 17/22 mpg without the disabler and now I get 16/21mpg with it.

Personally I tried the manual mode at 5 gear. Yes all 8 cylinders are active. However rpm’s are up in 5 gear at hwy speeds. Short trips at freeway speeds are okay in 5 gear. But hundreds of miles in 5 gear? That’s where the AFM range disabler has the advantage. JMO

Read your owners manual. There is no reason to install AFM delete. As instructed in the Owners Manual shift into M. Whatever gear you are in it will be displayed. Then tap up to the gear you want I usually go to 5 or 4. The xmsn is not strained because it is electronically controlled. Now as stated in the Owners Manual when 5 or lower is selected your engine CANNOT go into V4 mode i.e. the AFM is not available! Another plus is when going 70 on flat highway still have AFM available for 20 mpg. No need for AFM delete bandaids.

This video is extremely long winded though for such a simple answer, if you don’t want to do major engine work, just buy an HPtuners mpvi2, you can even download the VCM suite for free and it comes with a few sample tunes to look through the program. Disabling the DOD on most Silverado’s is literally just a drop down option that says enable or disable, once the vehicle is flashed you can remove the mpvi2 and it will NEVER run in v4 until you flash it back. You can even keep the warranty on the vehicle if you just change it back before you get to the shop lol pretty much impossible to tell if it has been flashed or not.

@@undeadmonkey9122 Right on, I came from a 5.3 Sierra so I know the feeling haha, way more torque in a 6.2. The first thing I see a lot of guys do with their 6.2 is install a boxed cold air intake, AFE is expensive but their pro5r filter is a monster. Next buy NGK iridium plugs and MSD wires. I would also change from the stock rancho shocks as soon as possible, Bilstein makes a great replacement. Then comes the most important part, a loud pipe out the back lmao Texas Speed 3 1/2” w/ cutout was easily the loudest pipe I could find for this truck. I snapped and bent a pushrod the other day and thought I was going to have to pull the head, threw another pushrod in just to see what it would do and it’s like nothing ever happened lol, time will tell what will happen to the chunk of pushrod still left in the engine, chances are it’s rattling in the pan out of harms way.

Great video and very informative. This explains why some people still have lifter failure even after they've installed a disabler because it seems that the lifter or other components pertinent to the AFM/DFM system were already failing at that point. So in short, it might seem that the best solution is to purchase the disabler and install it almost immediately after you purchase the vehicle. This way, you are actually taking preventative action and not just putting a band-aid on an already bad part.

Now this info answers a lot of questions about gen 4 and 5 reliability and AFM DOD. I have the RANGE Dis-abler on my 2015 5.3 Silverado. I leave it plugged all the time. I'll take the hit on MPG, I didn't like the shudder I got when cruising at 30-45 mpg, converter locked up, in over drive, on 4cyl mode. The switching in and out of these systems, made me say, Oh Hell No. Disabled in v8 mode is smooth as expected. This system shifts thru all six speeds pretty quickly even in steady cruise, and the shutter wasn't going to cut it. Pulling a trailer with car, at 60 mph+ with AFM ENABLED, is no problem, and I get 20 mpg+. But I just leave it disabled.

They already are. I'm 23 and saw this coming a long time ago. Pre 2008/pre 2006 trucks are about to sky rocket in value. Your problem is you bought a chevy instead of a older toyota. Your chevy is fine but isn't shit in a 1st gen tundra. Heck cant compare to second gen tundras either. You are not well prepared to take your chevy into 2030-2040 because your old chevy won't last that long. My old Toyota v8 will.

Guys an some girls don’t worry AFM is easy to work on an fix. It’s not as bad as it seems. You just need a few parts. Like a BTR stage 2 cam ls7 lifters an VVT delete an a few gaskets an head bolts. A dyno tune an you will never have a problem out of your AFM. SS headers an duel exhaust is optional. Best upgrades I made to mine

I got 160k hard miles on my 08 without issue. Make sure you run the proper oil in the engine or they will burn oil like crazy. Ask me how I know. That being said, when the engine inevitably takes a dump, I’ll yank it out and do a cheap rebuild and kill all the AFM components. This pickup is always towing or pushing a plow, that 4 cylinder nonsense isn’t saving me any fuel. They’re good engines though. We have several in the family. Intake gaskets and oil pressure sensors are the main repairs on them. No big deal. Do them both at the same time and don’t worry about it for years to come. Always used FelPro gaskets with great luck.

I have a 2010 Silverado 5.3….it has burned oil like crazy since day 1, brand new. Like 2 quarts or more every 3k. I just put the new valve cover (driver side only) because, apparently there was a design flaw in the drainage, and lots of oil went through the PCV. As somebody mentioned, my number 1 plug was very gunked up, and number 7 was pretty bad. Oil consumption has slowed, but its still too much, Any ideas? Using the AFM disable device will only work if lifter damage has not yet begun. The other, and most important part is changing oil every 4000-4500 miles. These engines do not tolerate wear well if going to a longer oil change interval. Having done these two things will lessen the chances of lifter failure considerably.
@lazurm

SERVICE 1956: I'm not a mechanic and, so, my question. Does your suggestion to change the oil every 4000-4500 miles still apply if I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic oil? As a note also, I have no engine oil loss after 6,000 miles (so far).
@service1956
@service1956 2 жыл бұрын
@@lazurm There are 2 problems that these engines have. First is that they do not tolerate dirty oil for an extended period of time. The oil itself will not break down a whole lot in 5000 miles but, the problem remains when hydrocarbons form inside the crankcase contaminating the oil. Also, short trips during cold weather will result in moisture to form inside the crankcase. This is bad, especially for these engines. Tuning out the AFM will keep it in full time 8 cyl mode. Therefore the VLOM solenoids will not activate, and the lifters will not activate. Doing these 2 things will greatly lessen the chance of having AFM related problems. Another problem I just thought about is that there is a filter screen under the oil pressure sending unit that gets clogged and can cause a problem. This is also brought on by going too long between oil changes.

Check the rear of bo5h exhaust manifds for broken bolt. Super common to break the rear ones and get a persistent tick, if the gap isn't to big alot of times the tick will go away when it gets hot from expansion. You pay someone alot of money to drill all the old bolts out and hope they don't screw up you have to buy a new cylinder head or dorma. Makes a bracket you can scre to the back of the head and uses a bolt to push the manifold back in place for like 10 or 15 bucks. I used it 3 years ago and I've have zero problems with it and no More tick tick tick at cold start. Again super super common problem, always assume the easy stuff 1st don't always assume the worst. And when in doubt, pay someone who knows what they're doing 50 or 100 bucks to give it a once over? Cheap peace of mind in my opinion.

I heard the same from the video. However yes oil is no longer need with the AFM deleted. With a range technology disabler. So once the range is in the OBD port. All 8 cylinders are activated. The excess oil is sprayed on the cylinder wall and oil pan. BUT he did say that’s it’s more prominent in higher RPM engines. So stay away from jack rabbit take offs! The system has the ability to precisely time the valves to close at given points in crank rotation. It times the valves to close on squeeze (compression) for 2 cylinders, and suck (intake) on 2 cylinders that are directly opposite in the firing order. And the 4 that are squeezing and sucking against each other have their fuel injectors turned off. With 2 on squeeze and 2 on suck, they act like springs against each other. They are not pumping any air, that would defeat any advantage by causing the deactivated cylinders to do work.
