On my previous garden railway I used the same way of track laying, also with Massoth clamps. Changing pieces of track or a switch with these clamps is very easy. It sure looks very good and professional. Keep up the good work 🙂

Hi! The Massoth clamps are really great. Not cheap but easy to use and they function properly every single time and for years and years as well. I do my best to keep up the good work, thank you for whatching!

That's a huge station! It's looking fantastic, Robert. Have you spoken about your track plan in one of your videos? I'd love to visualise what you're dreaming of. Really enjoying following the progress with your videos.

Hi! There is a video about the track plan for this station built, it was produced way back in the planning phase of the projekt. The station I am building right now has nothing to do with the plans I made earlier... You can get a short glimps of the actual track plan if you go to 2min 12sec in this video although I made some little changes to this plan too. Since I am constantly planning one thing and building another it is best to follow the progress video by video. I have a rough plan in mind but changes are constantly made as I encounter problems or have better Ideas.

Thank you! I am using the track system manufactured by Thiel. The track profile is standard IIm / Code 332 track. The only difference to other manufacturers are the sleepers, they look a little bit different. It is compatible with any other track system like LGB, Piko, TrainLine and so on...

@summitrailway
@summitrailway Жыл бұрын
Hey Mark! I am using the rail bender manufactured by TrainLi. Since it is the first rail beder I am owning I can´t compare it to other products on the market. All I can say is that I am impressed with this bender! It is built like a tank and easy to use. Although it is kind of expensive I would always buy it again! I will gather some more experience with it and then make a review video. Here is the link... www.train.li/https/cms-e-jimdo-com/app/se4d383b176709519/p66baf3041234152a/

Great job. It looks like you don't use isolated sections. How do you manage to detect your trains?
@summitrailway
@summitrailway Жыл бұрын
Hi! You have very sharp eye´s. It´s true, I don´t use insolated sections. If the dispatcher is able to verify visually that a certain track or switch is clear of traffic it is ok to do so. Thus I don´t need a "track clear" indication in my signal box. Since this is exactly the case in this staion area (or will be) I will skip all the insulating. This reduces the amount of wiring, electrical components and potential electrical issues significantly. I have to maintain the layout on my own in the future so I want to have a simple, reliable installation. That´s the reason behind it.

Robert, I'm really enjoying your videos. Lots of practical advice. How has your track work held up over time laid on the stones. Has the roadbed gone up and down due to winter frost heave? Regards
@summitrailway
@summitrailway Жыл бұрын
I am glad you can find some advice in my videos! Me as well as a friend of mine lay those tracks in this manner for several years now. It works great If you do it right. It is very critical to compact the ground firmly bevor laying the subbase to prevent settlement. You also need some kind of a weed barrier, I use pond liner but there are some other materials which you can use. After laying the track it is critical to not distrub the subbase so it has time to interlock between the rocks. This takes a few months but then the track is very stable. Winter frost is not a problem at all. Heat expansion will move the track and shift some of the subbase particularly at curved track pieces. In this case the track has a tendency to lean to the far end of the curve. This can easely be fixed by adding some ballast. In any case, this is not a maintanance free way of laying your tracks but when its done the right way it is verily easy to keep up with the maintanace and fun as well since you can transport the ballast by train. I hope this answers your question, otherwise feel free to ask.
@darkknighte
@darkknighte Жыл бұрын
@@summitrailway thank you so much. Yes compacting is essential. I'm in Canada, so we have huge extremes from summer heat to very cold winters. I'm also very interested in your signal box and how you connect wiring from master control unit out to the various points, signals and track out there. Very few videos out there explain that. They may post a schematic, but not how it actually works. Really enjoying the series! thanks for the answers!
@summitrailway
@summitrailway Жыл бұрын
Hi! The Canadian climate offers some challenges which I don´t have to cope with. I would prefer some water permeable weed barrier in your case, pond liner might get you in trouble during winter times. In my area it is kind of dry year round... The electrical installation of my signal box will be part of the series in the future, I might get to this stage of the project during winter. As long as the weather is nice I will work on track installation, retaining walls and buildings to expand the layout beyond the station area.

Expansion/Contraction of the rails at the joints? What is done to allow for this? Great video! Well done!
@summitrailway
@summitrailway Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! The joints are clamped with the massoth screw connectors, they usually are stable enough to keep most of the joints together during temperature changes. When the track expands during high temperatures the length difference is mostly compensated by movement of the curves in the track system. In critical spots where I dont want this movement I used thiel expansion track pieces which can compensate the change in track length. Those where used in the station area. I can show them in one of my following videos :)

@@summitrailway Fantastic! Thanks, so very much! We will be moving from Taxifornia to Venice, Florida in November of this year....temps range from mid-70 F in Winter and low 90 F in summer with fairly high humidity. I just watched your 2011 to the present video..... a very nice approach to the hobby, and I watched your RR crossing and pathway videos earlier this week. Well done! And that is about all the German I know! My German instructor in high school was Frau Phoebe Shultz, and it was an immersion class....not until after three days of the class did I ask my dad what was the meaning of "hausaufgaben," I decided to take up Spanish! My dad immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, and thence to the US. Since he already knew German, in Winnipeg he learned from the other immigrant kids his Italian, Russian, a bit of French, and English, at which he was more proficient than native English speakers here, in California! Al het beste! Paul from the San Francisco Bay area.
