Konnichiwa and thanks again for tuning in to SUMO PRIME TIME. We truly appreciate your support for the channel. At center of sumo universe, Kokugikan, there’s a sumo school for new recruits to attend for about 6 months to learn the basics of being a professional sumo rikishi. I was invited to attend the school for a day to find out how each young trainee becomes a full-fledged rikishi. The school not only teaches students fundamental sumo skills, but also offers lectures on various subjects which include guidelines of being a professional rikishi, Japanese (calligraphy), social science, sports medicine and sumo history. It was a great experience for me to join the new recruits for some serious training sessions and lectures. My body was sore for a couple of days but it sure was worth it! My hats off to the instructors (former pro rikishi) for their tireless work in guiding young trainees become not only strong rikishi but also responsible adults. We hope you enjoy the clip and root for all the new recruits who devote their body and soul to become successful rikishi as quickly as they can. Arigato and see you soon!!

This has been my favorite of your videos so far. You are doing great work! Having an English language video channel with this type of content is so helpful for us fans outside of Japan. You are really personalizing the sport with humanizing interviews of the rikishi and behind the scene videos. Keep up the good work!

It's the first 6 months of joining a stable. Ochiai debuted in the 3rd tier because he won the corporate Yokozuna title. So, he entered his oyakata as a professional rikishi. People don't usually progress as fast as Ochiai. So, he's still in school while in Juryo.😂😂😂😂 I think the same thing happened with Goeido and Endo. So much talent and progressing quickly. I'm glad to see that Ochiai realizes that he is in a leadership position and treats those beneath him well. Im looking forward to his makuuchi debut. I hope he stays healthy and has a long career.

Very good broadcast...helping people understand just how much goes in to becoming a rikishi...what is required not only on a daily basis but becoming accustomed to the sumo way of life. A wrestler must be absolutely dedicated or it will not work out. There is so much more to sumo than the moments spent on the dohyo during an actual match. ...so much more.

That's fascinating! I knew about the sumo school, but I always assumed that tsukedashi rikishi were exempt. Obviously not. How do they juggle their schooling with their obligations as sekitori? I bet everyone wants to fight Ochiai!

Best video yet from Sumo Prime Time. I wish Hiro would compete in one basho, perhaps in the jonokuchi division. I think a lot of people discount the difficulty and technical aspects of Sumo. Seeing Hiro compete in the lowest division would be an interesting experiment. I'm not sure if Hiro would sacrifice his body to do so, but I think it would definitely up the number of subscribers if he did. Hiro, please please compete! Thanks!
@LauraJdogmom Жыл бұрын
I don't think they'd let him compete in a basho since he is not a member of a heya, but it would be fun if he could compete in a jungyo match or at a retirement. Nobody gets yeeted off the dohyo at those.

I still don't really get it. So they go to these schools for 6 months AFTER officially turning pro and joining a stable? So that means you have guys in there like Ochiai who have a stellar amateur career behind them and are already at a very high level as well as complete newbies? How much prior knowledge of sumo is expected before someone joins up? (I mean I guess most of them would have done some sumo as kids but I've seen reports of new recruits who have a background in some other sport, not to mention the foreigners...)
@man-tk8mh Жыл бұрын
@@aszechy to be fair, ochiai is a complete outlier strength and skill wise. i dont think they get guys of his caliber there often
@LauraJdogmom Жыл бұрын
@@aszechy Apparently so. I always assumed that tsukedashi rikishi would be exempt, but it looks like I was wrong. I wonder how often they have sekitori in class? I understand that foreigners have to attend for a year, which would mean that Ichinojo was in the top division and still in school. In fact, he might have been at sekiwake. He entered sumo in January 2014 and was sekiwake by November.
@mmenah5453 Жыл бұрын
@@aszechy Same, this left more questions unanswered. How come Ochiai still has to attend sumo school, but gets to be sekitori? How often do they go to sumo school? After they finish their morning studies, do they go back to their beyas and continue practising? Or do they get the rest of their day free, and only after the six months they get to train with their stablemates? Do they have to pay for it while still getting a small stipend from the Sumo Association? or do they get the stipend after graduation from sumo school? I could go on...
