Hi Dave, neat video. I had quite a good collection of these by accident. Bought some Fruit Grubs for My Geckos to eat but they would not touch them. The Grubs were too feisty and have big jaws. I was at a loss what to do with them. Chucked them in an old cricket keeper and was surprised to find they had cocooned themselves in dirt. Then one day saw a brilliantly coloured beetle walking about!. They are fun to watch. They love sunshine. In the afternoon the sun beams coming through the window would strike one corner of the terrarium I had transfer them to. All of them would pile up on top of each other in that beam and compete to be on top of the pile.

Beautiful little beetles, they make me think of a MUCH prettier June Beetle. Both times that one beetle took off startled me. And for that reason, they are a no-go for me. That sound just freaks me out. More power to those that actually enjoy these beauties. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

I had an ex who cared for reptiles, insects, fish, tortoises etc. He would make the most beautiful tanks (idk the proper name for them, vivarium?)for them and he had so many cool creatures. We had a a praying mantis, 3 Giant spiny stick insects, Loads of sun beetles, several species of tarantula, mourning geckos etc. I remember just staring at the sun beetles when we would feed them and do their tank. They are so weirdly beautiful. Their BZZZZZ would make me jump sometimes, especially in the morning when I wasn't expecting it 😂 but I look back now and have so many fond insect memories+I'm glad I got so much up close experience with the cool creepy crawlies! I really miss the husbandry, and making good homes for each different creature.

They're like a June bug here in America. People are scared to death of them. That noise they make when they fly will send people over a cliff to get away. Ha. Gentle, clumsy, wonderful. They remind me of warm summer nights.

Thank you your video. What a lovely insight to where the beetles like to hide. I am a teacher and I bought some grubs for my children to watch. I was worried as they had not emerged as beetles and it had been 5 months , however this last week two have appeared. I am now wondering if there are more lurking beneath the surface! Could I ask where the tank is from (assuming it has a lid 😅) - the one you transferred the beetles/grubs into. I was going to put the beetles in with the African Land Snails. But after watching your video, I think a separate enclosure would be best.

@@AtharAqua I have my PC turned on during the night which heats my room up a little bit which is actually pretty surprising tbh lol. I have the standard insulation found in UK homes, it's usually only autumn and winter where I get really cold and during summer it gets a bit too hot for comfort and sometimes I struggle even staying in my room even with the windows and door open and fan on. I use a cheap digital clock that has humidity and temp which I've had for 6 years and it's surprisingly accurate, 0.5C difference between it and my laser thermogun.

Lovely care video Dave. I know some people suggest separating the larvae/grubs and the cocoons from the adults and each other as they can be predatory to each other, but within a large setup (for example a 30x30x45 Exo) with deep substrate, bark to climb etc - that would seem rather overkill. Do you bother with any separation in your setup at all ? Also - when you were rooting through to get the beetles and cocoons, from the komodo, Ive read that some of the cocoons have a tendency to fix themselves to the sides of the glass. Have you had cocoons crack from that situation - one of my cocoons seems to be "split" and the beetle isnt just fully formed, its been placed to the side of the enclosure but I dont know whether to hold out much hope for the poor little fella. Thanks for all the info you share. Such valuable insight.

@@daveslittlebeasties I can't remember which way round it is, but one of the sexes has a ventral groove, while the other has an uninterrupted abdomen - in the beetles, that is! The larvae are supposedly sexable too, but the "dot" method doesn't seem to work on P. marginata, and I'm afraid to stare at their heads too long in case they try to bite me haha. I got given a couple dozen of the grubs a few months back, because they needed a new home and I was started my insect collection... The best thing you can do is remove the cocoons and put them in a container with some clean damp soil and keep them warm and they will hatch , a good place is the airing cupboard just check them every few days to see if you have new beetles 👍good luck 👍🤞

Only thing that puts me off is the flying, and the noise of the flying :( Is a shame because they're very pretty and interesting, and not to mention easy to keep... I dunno, bugs still freak me out too much sadly, especially ones that fly!

@@daveslittlebeasties I'm going to confuse the issue: they're very easy to care for . . . they are = they're. There, is about that spot; Over there, over there, et cetera. Their, as in his, hers; it's possessive. Neither of us is being picky. I think I speak for both of us when I say that it drives me nuts to see the spelling and grammar of an *obviously* intelligent person, make them look like an idiot. Especially a nice bloke like you! After all, if you *weren't* intelligent, your wife would have left you, and your spiders would have killed you by now, so there's no question about it!!🤔✨🕷️✨🤦

Hello I have a question if you have noticed of course. How long it takes to the female beetle to lay eggs after mating. For example 3 days, 5 days? 10 more or less? Once your beetles mated, when did you see the fist egg or eggs? I would appreciate it if you know!

Hello there. I have a huge issue to solve which is temperature. It's mid October now and as you can imagine the temperature has already dropped significantly and my sun beetles are not coming out to eat and they are inactive unless there is a sunny and warm day. I really need a heating source but I don't know which is the best for my Exo Terra Faunarium 300x195x205 mm. Do I need a heat lamp or a mat? And which wattage will fit the best for them? Thank you in advance! Panos.

I will keep your suggestion and thanks about it. The only problem is that I do not have a vivarium and they are too expensive. Although I can share you some photos of my enclosure or a video so you can give me more tips! If you got an email I could show you my collection.

Great video, I have some questions about heat and light. For larvae i would like to use a heat pad placed outisde the box, at a few cm of distance feom the side. For adults i was thinking about e heat lamp. Do they need a proper light simulating day and night for a proper survivaland reproduction?

@@sherimoen617 Hope I'm not too late, but look into "blue death feigning beetles." They are beautiful and extremely easy to keep (live in sand and eat vegetable scraps and pet food) and don't sting, bite, scratch, or do anything else nasty. They are about as big as a quarter, flightless, and don't move too fast, so you should be able to feel confident getting your face close knowing they won't jump or fly. Finding them can be a bit tough depending on the season, but there are breeders out there who will ship for reasonable rates.

Yah, here in Europe some animal species became endangered or even extinct becouse someone brought animals from abroad. And that happens all over the world, so it is ok that nations take extra safety measures to protect beuty of diversity of animal species and kinds. Like for example European mink is endangered becouse of Kanadian Mink; or Abstacus crayfish are endangered becouse of signal crayfish; etc. And as for the beetles, who knows what troubles they can bring. They breed very quickly, they eat roots and they are, in some way, simmilar to cockchafer, who are huge problem to gardeners.
