Try telling our dogs that keeping track of time is a uniquely human thing. 0730, breakfast. 0830, morning walk. 1500, afternoon walk. 1800, dinner. 1930, playtime. 2130, nighttime walk. +- 15 minutes on any of these times, max.

At least once a day my GF asks me what day it is. I look her in the eye and I tell her. She says, "Are you sure?" Without breaking eye contact I say, "Let me check." I keep looking at her and count to five. "Yep. That's what day it is." She thanks me and goes about her day. I don't know why I felt it important to tell anybody about this. It just seemed the right time.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way. Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way. Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain. You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today. And then one day you find ten years have got behind you. No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun. So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again. The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older, Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

I was going to say something like that and suggest humans kept time through their genetic codes, before civilizations became more complex and sheltered. There are so many great comments here already. Humans do seem to have some vestigial natural connection to time. I know my hair grows faster in some months of the year, very rapidly this time of year and much less around January. Who knows what other natural, internal time is alive within us?

They also freak out at total solar eclipses - completely understandable. It had to be crazy for the ancients.
@annalisette5897
@annalisette5897 3 жыл бұрын
@@John-gq7vt What is even freakier is, at least we are told, some ancient societies believed their leaders (pharaoh for instance), or high priests could cause the sun to rise every day. That seems crazy but some Mexican archaeology suggested the Aztecs may have remembered a time when volcanic eruptions blotted out the sun for periods of time. No sun = no crops = famine and disaster. (I experienced the Mt. St. Helens eruption in May, 1980. That was a small volcanic eruption but even with modern knowledge and technology it was terrifying. The weather was affected for more than a year, at least it seemed so where I lived in the Pacific Northwest.)

@@disabledchatzen5276 very untrue. That’s actually a problem we’ve run into with AI assisting in medical diagnosis. They can come up with a very accurate diagnosis but oftentimes we have no idea how they reach their conclusions, and then the AI lacks sufficient ability to explain it to us so explainability remained separate from actual understanding. You also have to consider the possibility for the problem of explanation to be based on a gap in experience. Imagine a scientist at NASA trying to explain to a four year old the finer details of their job.. If the four year old still remained incapable of understanding, does that mean the scientist also didn’t understand the subject matter?

I think that the main difference in time-keeping in the animal kingdom is more to do with explicit versus implicit time-keeping, symbolic-recording just being another kind of explicit time-keeping, but one with history and not just present-future relevance like many migratory animals. In any case the chimps at sim-liki certainly know when very specific fruit trees will be in bloom.
