Just ordered one today from Home Depot. I’ve had Bermuda grass for six years and have noticed some thatch developing the last two years. Can’t wait to get in there with the scarifier and see what happens. Thank you for the in-depth review!

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower kzbin.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

Am considering buying one of these to remove weed and clover overgrowth from my back yard. I bought a manual dethatching rake from Lowe's but it's just way too much manual work and very exhausting. One good thing about the collected thatch is that it makes excellent composting material once it fully dries out and starts to decompose.
@eljuarense3 жыл бұрын
Why did you dethach and scarified at the same time? most of the videos a watched about dethaching say do one or the other, the scarifier supposedly is when you are going to be seeding the lawn
@diyhowtoandreviews3 жыл бұрын
I over seeded the whole lawn after this, so I wanted it both clear of thatch and the ground disturbed for the over seeding.
@ReefMimic3 жыл бұрын
I do both at same time it seems the the scarifier is better and doing both seems redundant. I may just use the scarifier next spring. Just don’t over do it
@stevenfoster9099 Жыл бұрын
All the videos say do BOTH at the same time or just the scarifier. As the dethatch doesnt pull up much.

From what I have seen from different reviewers is you get even better results if you turn 90degress and go across the first run you do.

I dethatch about end may and scarifer 1st oct and overseed in midwest....mines 4 yrs old no problems....imo the little bag is too small I use my lawn mower to pick up thatch cause bag is 4x times bigger....I set mine low as it will go w scarifier and little higher for dethatch.

When should you be dethatching during the season ?
@diyhowtoandreviews3 жыл бұрын
Early to late spring, or in the fall. It depends a little bit on where you are in the country, but you just don't want to do it in the dead of summer when the grass is already stressed. Any active growing season is good though. Here in Ohio, from March to late May/mid-June is safe.

Have you tried the battery cordless version??? Curious if it will perform as well as the electric version
@diyhowtoandreviews2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t. That’s the one I wanted but it was never in stock so I finally gave up waiting and got this one. I’ve seen positive reviews on it though. I’m guessing it mostly depends on how big your yard is for how long the battery lasts.
@brodygoalie2 жыл бұрын
Would assume performance should be the same just that you probably need to purchase extra battery.

I loved the review! Which settings would you recommend using when doing a lawn renovation to pull up more dead grass/weeds after scalping to get more soil exposure?

I’d saw as low as you can go. Start with the Scarifier and then dethatch after to clean it up.

I just purchased the aj805e. Used it for a bit. Flipped it over and noticed when either bar is attached, they sit at an angle and not level to the ground. I’m wondering if this is normal, or is my machine defective. What do you think, thank you in advance for your response.
@diyhowtoandreviews2 жыл бұрын
It could just be how the bar is seated. If you go to the 6 minute mark I take the bar off and swap it, you can see on the left where the Allen bolts go the bracket is flat on one side and a half circle on the other. The thing with this machine is it will bolt up and spin fine either way but it is designed to sit with the circle inside the recessed part. Again you can see that in the video. I know this because once I swapped them and didn’t pay attention and put it upside down. Double check yours and hopefully that’s all it is 👍. Good luck!
@frankl10242 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the advice, went back and checked your video. I figured out what was wrong. My scarifier blade was installed wrong from the factory, the bracket that holds it in place was installed upside down. So when I change to the rake blade, I installed The bracket just like the scarifier blade bracket, which Made it not level with the ground. Glad I got that figured out before I ran it too much more. Again thank you.
@diyhowtoandreviews2 жыл бұрын
@@frankl1024 yeah it’s weird that installing it upside down is even an option. Most of these types of things are “idiot proof” where they’d make the bracket holes offset or something so it only fits in one way. I’m sure Sunjoe isn’t following this thread but maybe they’ll see it and update a future model 🤷♂️

Nice video thanks. I was just wondering since you aren't using the bag to help with keeping the carriage freer underneath can you cut out either the bottom or maybe the back to allow some ejection?
@diyhowtoandreviews3 жыл бұрын
You can probably prop the back open but it would shoot grass and debris at you. Really you don’t need to though, without the bag it just leaves deposits when you stop or turn around. Unlike with a lawn mower it doesn’t seem to bog down or lose any effectiveness with grass in there.

I got my 13" sunjo on Amazon and the 15" wasn't available. Some outfits were selling the 15's at double price taking advantage of the pandemic. First time user so can anyone please tell me which set of tines do I use first. Do I scarify first and then power rake?
@diyhowtoandreviews3 жыл бұрын
For me, using the scarifier first, and then the tines worked best. I tried both ways and felt the dethatcher worked better after scarifying. Be sure to cut the grass down low as well, to your mowers lowest setting. But don’t do it all at once. I’d cut your grass normal, then 3-4 days later cut it half way down, then 3-4 days later cut it at your lowest setting. That will be less stressful on the grass.
@therealbrian7322 жыл бұрын
What height did you cut your grass before using this machine?

I just cut it to my lowest mower setting, but not exactly sure what that is in inches.

Do you think this will work on Saint Augustine grass?
@diyhowtoandreviews3 жыл бұрын
I think it would, so long as the soil was properly irrigated and cut to a short length. On the part of my yard that was shady and very thick and healthy, the machine still pulled up thatch and didn't bog down. The scarifier will help as well. There is alot of back and forth online about dethacthing St Augustine grass, but at the end of the day, if thatch is there and it's keeping the lawn from being healthy, it needs to be removed.
@ccvee72873 жыл бұрын
If you use this on St Augustine it will destroy it, I learned this the hard way. Don't do it bro, seriously. The stolons will be cut and uprooted and then the roots will die out. I just had to resod the entire yard.
@diyhowtoandreviews3 жыл бұрын
@@ccvee7287 Wow, yikes, thanks for the additional insight!
@dronesouth90982 жыл бұрын
You can use the scarifier on St. Augustine. It should cut the roots and leave them attached to the ground, if you use the dethatch attachment, it will just rip the roots out of the ground. I am pretty sure this is true of most grasses that grow with stolons. I have always heard that you never dethatch Bermuda, Centipede, St. A etc. only verticut or scarifier, but I am no expert.
