Great series, but as much as we all like seeing you guys enjoying yourselves, and we do, this episode could've been on any gas powered vessel. We already know a day on a large catamaran in a beautiful place is a great place to be. We what we want to know about a Silent Yacht specifically is how is charging going? How much power usage? etc.

Liking this series. Any chance of tracking power flow for a typical day? Usage(house/motor)and production(solar/motor/generator)and what the bank size is? All this tech really interests me, having been an electrical/communications tech many years ago. I really wish I’d been working in this field during these times of amazing change. I was around to see the changeover between MTS(manual telephone service(2-way radios linked through a land line operator)) and cellular technology, then to just hand held personal cell phones. This took less than 10 years to transition. I’m so excited to see where we’ll be in the next 5 to 10 years with battery and ev technology.

If I under stood the captain correctly, the genny would take 8 hours at 4kWh to take the 2 banks from 50-80%. So 32kW equals 30% battery capacity. So sounds like its got about 100kW worth ot batteries on board.
@DarrenBainbridge

Weirdly, I normally find Silent Yachts a little stunted looking. For some reason, I'm not sure why, this one looks a lot more sleek. This is the older design, isn't it? I hope the new ones can work on keeping that sleek bow, it really helps make the vessel.

I've always wished a yacht could produce enough solar power to have a small greenhouse room in it. That way a person can grow their own fruits and vegetables.
@panpiper
@panpiper 2 жыл бұрын
All you need is sunlight for a greenhouse, glass will do. However the space you would need to provide any substantial quantity of one's food requirement would use up the whole of the yacht. Maybe a place for growing micro-greens, but those would be awfully expensive microgreens if you factor in the opportunity costs.

The concept of the electric catamaran is nice but realistically it is nothing more than a coastal cruiser with limited speed hampered by limited solar power from panels that lie flat & cannot be angled to keep their surfaces perpendicular to the sun, These limitations necessitate diesel generator power to augment the battery banks. If that vessel were to encounter unavoidable inclement weather it would not have the power to overcome head on or beam on waves making it somewhat perilous to navigate from danger. I find the cost factor to be prohibitive for the limited performance despite it being an "ecological show piece" for the future. I have constructed & used land base solar power for 10 plus years so I have learned a good bit about getting the best from the sun.

On this particular boat, the main refrigerator is outside, which I frankly don't understand given how much heat is picked up by steel. I know this is not carried through on the rest of the Silent yacht line. I also notice that this yacht was outfitted with a crane, can you elaborate on that at all? Clicked on the Mortlock yachts link, and there is no way to look at the yachts available for charter.

@@squished1879 I bet you I could teach you how to sail in the same time it would take to learn how to operate this and its systems.And replacing sails, if ever needed, will be a lot lot cheaper than the inevitable need to replace the batteries on this.Like every electric vehicle,it's a massive cost that's lurking in the future!

The big advantage is having virtually unlimited power when anchored. HVAC, hot water, cooking, diver compressor, water maker, etc. could all run indefinitely on solar alone. So there are pros and cons, but for a lot of use cases this would be ideal.

Not surprising solar panels produce very little and less if they are not in a good orientation both in bearing and inclination. On a yacht guzzling fuel it's just a gimmick. If you want a solar powered boat use sails.

I'd like to see the range on the newer ones. This is a older version which I believe has smaller battery capacity. The kit addition is also interesting.

This is an early model. Checking Silent-yacht, the newest have about 25% more solar, much bigger battery and a 100kw genset. I expect this will make a big difference. I hope they discuss this later.
@cgourin
@cgourin 2 жыл бұрын
@@LeftCoastStephen I would be surprised there is any ecological benefit at all. Each time they use fuel they got to carry the electrical propulsion part that had a CO2 footprint to build. It would take at least 3 days to recharge by solar not using any electricity and they got on the website 160KW to move 50T, one and half time a Tesla S battery to move 25 times more weight. I call BS.
@redwolfexr
@redwolfexr 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on speed. They had a distance and ran faster than needed to get there - knowing how much battery they had. And also leaving enough overhead to charge the cells for the next night. Remember that speed/power is logarithmic.. they can go twice as far at 4 knots as they can at 6. Its not designed to be a long distance boat, 25 miles a day at 4 knots and you never run out of power or need to run the generator unless its really cloudy. At 4 knots you could probably run all day and still have a little bit to charge the house battery. They have a VERY specific crowd they are selling to, and they know who it is. :) You guys are trying to make this a power cruiser, which it is not. Its a floating apartment with minimal mobility that can run offgrid. Running about 3-4 knots it can run virtually forever as long as the sun is out.

This series so far could be mistaken for literally any catamaran anywhere. I dont care about fruit salads and making bread, I want to know why we should care this is a Silent Yacht, you cant tell from the video. Daily power usage, typcial solar inputs during the stay, how many hours the generator had to be run, litres/gallons used by the generator, conditions, etc. etc. We need to know this info, Silent Yachts refuse to show us irl usage on actual trips. You also said youd cover the electric tender, thats so far been used but not talked about once other than seeing nudists 🙄 Come on man, either lift your game or disclose that you're under an NDA from Silent Yachts and arent allowed to talk about it (especially generator fuel usage per day).
