“An off the shelf policy about National Service, completely out of the blue with no context, strikes me I’m afraid as a gimmick.”
The Tories’ plan to bring back mandatory National Service will turn young voters away from the Conservatives, says Times Radio presenter Lord Vaizey.

I would love to see the tories sink to below 100 seats. 70 seats would be a win fer sure. There is a possibility that the Lib Dems could take a few more off the tories though at the cost of what Labour could get. Calling the election later could have put the tories in third place behind the Lib Dems, that would have been awesome, though calling it early should put them in opposition. I am kinda going with your prediction though lib dems getting a handful more and labour a few less. I put the tories getting 85 seats.

It's insane. As a French citizen, I completed my national service in 1996. I was in one of the last contingents as it was abrogated in 1998. (1) Those with connections either did not do it or landed in cushy jobs. (2) Graduates were treated as cheap, educated labour by professional NCOs, most of whom did not even have the baccalaureate (3) Those graduates who extended their national service by 3 months for officer training were considered as worse than privates by professional NCOs. (4) That one year (it was 12 months at the time) delayed entry into the world of work. (5) who would want to serve for an institution that serves greedy politicians who wage illegal wars? There is no such thing as society anyway, who knows best than the Tories!

At a different time this is a good idea. Military or civilian service, gives our youngsters something to do, gives them a purpose, life skills, discipline, a sense of belonging to a society and something they can be proud of. We can recruit pensioners with skills to pass on for a boost in their pension, mould the next generation to be productive instead of being paid to sit at home. At the moment nobody wants to fight for a war engineered by the elite, to fight for a country they no longer recognise, to die on a foreign field for someone else’s war. Our kids have no future, nothing to do but play video games or hang around on the streets being recruited into street gangs. No hope of getting on the property ladder, nothing for them to do, treated as a problem for society rather than a valued asset to society.
