thank you guys for discussing this documentary and the subject matter with care (like always). i could talk about the exploitative nature of nonfiction media for a long time, but all I'll say for now is that you guys echo my sentiments especially given the troubling sensationalization of a certain rap battle that took place last year that completely abandoned care for potential victims in any way. it's not a joke and it's not just something to dance/sing along to.

I refuse to empathize with a victim who then victimizes the innocent. I understand that it is a cycle, but it is also a CHOICE to inflict the same pain they had to endure. You can choose to get actual help instead of feeding into the trauma. I’m not trying to oversimplify this, but there is way too much coddling for ppl who choose to hurt the young.

...but of course. The issue is that this doesn't actually do anything to stop the cycles of harm from starting in the first place. Also let's be real... I don't think it's that easy to access the psychiatric help you would need to actually make a change, especially if you're already vulnerable from having been abused and especially if you need to pay for access. None of which means you have to empathise with someone who does something so horrific, but I don't think it's productive to not do anything to fix the underlying systemic issues either

@isabellamorris7902 My empathy goes out to those who suffer in silence because they can't get the help or closure they need but that empathy ends as soon that pain is inflicted outwardly on someone else.

@@thesensiblesocialist Exactly. Nobody HAS to empathise. The issue is that people confuse "I cannot empathise with this person who has committed a heinous crime" (fair, reasonable) with "I refuse to do anything to actually help protect against the factors that we KNOW cause this, *before* any crime is actually committed". Personal empathy isn't really the tool for the job here anyway -- it would be much more helpful to look big-picture and figure out what types of harm can be stopped at the root, before the individual choice to do harm even happens.

I think we like watching these shows because we like to see the bad guys punished. Also, it’s so shocking how many men are this predatory. Also, as far as rehabilitation, studies have shown that there IS no rehabilitation for these people. Even if they spend years in prison, they still have the same predilections. It’s sad that they feel that way, because something seriously went wrong with their mental health, but once they act on it, I lose all compassion for them. The trauma that male deviant sexuality causes in this world is horrific, and there’s no reason to feel sorry for them AT ALL.
@Zoe.Noelle
@Zoe.Noelle 3 күн бұрын
I know first hand how manipulative these individuals are. I personally don’t believe people like that can be rehabilitated either nor do I believe they truly “want help”. People like that always cry for help after they are caught doing something they have no business doing with children. I can’t muster up an ounce of empathy or sympathy for people who get called out on national television for having inappropriate interactions with people they believed were underaged.

This reminds me of the Maury show and those infamous DNA test episodes. Looking back, it seems like a lot of the guests were being traumatized without even realizing it. And those kids-now adults-had their pictures broadcasted everywhere. I can only imagine how they feel about that today.

The issue with the question “Why do they do this?” is that it assumes a single, universal answer when, in reality, motivations vary from person to person. It's much easier to answer when focusing on an individual case. Some may be driven by a sexual attraction to minors, while others may simply take advantage of an opportunity. Some seek control over someone they perceive as vulnerable, while others act due to past trauma-or for reasons unrelated to it. There’s no one-size-fits-all explanation.

This sounds like an interesting look into how this show was produced. I always wondered how the decoys felt about being put in potentially dangerous situations. The “continuation” series of TCAP, Hansen vs. Predator, became popular with young people and I’ve seen a lot of amateur copycat KZbinrs trying to do the same thing. It’s disturbing to see.

@ it’s entrapment if you try to entice a person to commit a crime. I agree that someone shouldn’t take the “bait” but as far as the law is concerned, if your trying to coerce someone to commit an illegal act, it isn’t fair game. Yes, these men were in the wrong but they didn’t initiate the crime and that’s important.

This was an awesome discussion. I want to say two thing. 1: Victim to predator pipeline has come into question because most of that is self reported. The validity is questioned because researchers don’t know if that is reported because it happened or because they are trying to get sympathy for a lighter sentence. It bothers me personally, because I don’t want victims to feel like they are now cursed. It also lays a bit of societal shame on victims: You were a victim and now you are unsafe. IMO all To Catch A Predator did was make these people learn to be better criminals. Chris Hansen probably started out trying to do something “noble”, but with anything (I call it Evel Kneivel Effect), things have to keep getting bigger and more outrageous to hold your audience. He was able to make it all those years, but the “arrests” kept getting more tenuous.

To catch a predator was part of our Pop Culture. In the Wild West of the internet, do you know where your child is and who they are talking to? The danger is not in a car or playground but in your home. The range of men who participated in this type of activity was wide. All occupations, cultures, races, etc. It dispelled the myth that there is a “type” you can identify which heightened the danger. I was also amazed how their sickness would lead them to show up at someone's random house to engage with a child with no idea who could be there or come home. A trucker showed up with an eighteen-wheeler in a suburban neighborhood. Crazy. I definitely want to see documentary.

I used to watch for the real tv non scripted aspect of the show. It was one of the few places you could see some authentic feelings responses. As a dude I know how excited I get before getting lucky. You see guys who are on cloud nine go from victory to defeat the second Chris walked in. In all their desperation I think only one predator threatened violence in the moment. I just think more intelligent seasoned criminals would never fall for this kind of sting. So you’re taking amateurs off the street not the other guys.

Chris Hansen is a horrible person who has exploited people and victims for far too long for personal gain. A lot of people aren't aware of how unethical To Catch a Predator was as a show and how they didn't always collaborate with law enforcement, they would "arrest" them on camera and then let them go. A while back Chris started a youtube channel where he would try to "catch" youtube predators, he botched real victims cases so bad that the cases got dismissed in court and he fled the internet for a while hoping the heat would die down. Glad some light is being shed on this and some of his very problematic history, I will definitely check this documentary out!
