Join me in my studio for an informal demo that was originally a Facebook Live broadcast. In the video I paint a marsh and share tips on how to start a painting using extremes! The finished painting can be seen on my blog www.karenmargulis.com This is an impromptu iPhone video .It is not meant to be professional quality. I hope you enjoy watching the painting come to life!

Karen, thank you so much. This info about composition and aerial perspective is something i need to hear and see over and over again, and you teach it so well! I love the tip about glassine paper to isolate the shapes. In other words, its easy to understand. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. The painting is beautiful, and I've learned a very valuable lesson!

Great demo Karen, even for those of us who don't do pastel. I'm enjoying Patreon and doing thumbnails. Tomorrow will work on painting the 8x10 of the dunes.

I have watched all your videos, just wanted you to know how much l appreciate you talking directly to me as you do the demo. Your explanations are awesome. Your Ludwig set is so fine, l did the demo at our gallery last week, my idea was to introduce our painting group to pastels and it went well. Thanks you for what you do, your patron page ssooo helpful. Jane

Hi, I am learning and find your tutorials are really great, but I am so heavy handed I end up with mud. I can't seem to whisper as in your demo which was great. Is there a way to actually go really light besides thinking whisper. I know I need to practice but always still end up heavy handed. Would you have any other ideas I could use to keep from getting heavy handed please.? Thanks so much for your wonderful tutorials.

Thanks for another helpful video Karen (and your team). I appreciate you helpful tips along the way about drawing. When you talk about keeping lines horizontal in the distance then vertical closer, I see you almost divided below the horizon in thirds. One third horizontal and two thirds vertical. Would that work in most cases? I suppose it is intuitive for you, but I am not experienced with landscapes and trying to figure how to make things work. I love how you made such an interesting scene from what looked to be a fairly simple photo. Would you recommend working from something simple , especially for a beginner? Thank you.

When you mentioned using clear gesso, did you mean you use it over the partially finished painting and then paint over it?

You use the clear gesso on your bare surface before you paint. If you try putting it over the paint it will smear the paint, it is a brush on product. She was just saying that clear gesso gives you a textured surface. Clear gesso is good if you have paper that has no “tooth” to grab the pastel.

Stampin Craze Actually, I Have put a thin layer of clear gesso over parts of my pastel painting (with a small plastic tool or scraper)...let it dry and continue with the pastels over the dried gesso for additional texture. Works great ! Other pastel artists do this also.

I watch one of your videos yesterday but cannot find it. It is you spoke and showed a medium that started as a stick form that you put on the paper than added water to create an under painting. What is this medium?

May I make a request ? Could you hold your reference photo steady for a few seconds so that a screen shot can be taken of it? I like to be able to look at the original photo as you progress to see how you interpret it. Plus, i can convert the image to a gray scale removing all color and allowing me to see only values. I think others might benefit from this too.
