Great match! Enjoyed watching Gary Rowell at Roker Park as a kid.

I remember this game well i was there in the Fulwell end.I remember getting robbed by Coventry and Bristol city on the last game of the season when they kicked of 20 min late and knowing we got beat they messed about for the last 20 mins and manufacturing a draw and saving themselves and sending us down. Still sticks in my craw.

We went on an incredible run second half of the season after looking down and out. In successive games beat West Ham 6-0, West Brom 6-1 and Middlesbrough 4-0. Got shafted the last game of the season by Jimmy Hill.

You can't blame Jimmy Hill. I know what happened at that match but if you had got a point at Goodison then you would have stayed up. It was in your hands. Having said that, West Ham's last two matches were against Liverpool and Man Utd, who were due to meet in the FA Cup final a few days later. I was at Anfield for the game against West Ham and Liverpool were happy for a draw as it confirmed the league, a very boring match. A couple of days later Utd lost to West Ham. If the cup final hadn't been on the horizon then there may have been different outcomes in both matches and you would have stayed up. There are always lots of reasons behind winning a trophy or getting relegated

@@craiggerrard5117 100% correct. It doesn’t alter the fact though that the last 15 minutes of that game if either side had scored we would have stayed up. Now a goal might not have been scored anyway but if both sides had thought they still needed to win then it certainly could have happened.

@@ArchieFatcackie I can definitely appreciate your point, it was a bit dodgy to say the least at Highfield Road. You were unlucky that season. I think there was a match against Leeds at Elland Road that you could have won but Leeds got a fortunate point. And as I alluded to earlier, as a young Liverpool fan I was a bit embarrassed at the team failing to make an effort against West Ham or Bristol City when the fates of other teams were at stake.

This was a great result against a West Ham United side who would go on to win the FA Cup three years later at Wembley in 1980 as a second division side, like what we did back in 1973. 😂

I remember this game rather well, part of "the great revival", during the second part of the 1976-77 campaign. At the turn of the year, we were bottom of The First Division, and in a terrible run of form, where we found goals, never mind wins, as hard to come by as gold dust, and as such, it seemed only a matter of time before our fate was sealed. Then came an incredible spell, when we netted seventeen goals in four successive home games, including this vital win v fellow strugglers West Ham. And to think this "goal avalanche" had been triggered off by a narrow 1-0 win v another of our fellow strugglers, Bristol City! This was all part of a run of "Championship form", which gave us a real chance of avoiding the drop, when at one stage, we'd seemed more or less down and out of the top flight, just a shame it was all to no avail in the end ....

I'm too young to even know about football in the 70's but when were goalkeepers made to wear gloves? Also, football looks better then than it does nowadays..

It was indeed, just a shame that West Ham then "hammered" us 6-0 a few years later in 1992, not to mention 5-0 a few years before that!
