@@annak8755in the mid 70's,my family moved to the Seventh Day Adventist colony area of Siloam Springs Arkansas . The local grocery store was strongly stocked on a spectrum of Loma Linda vegetarian meat substitutes, fresh organic produce and hippy type herbal teas, cereals ,breads and assorted health foods. Some of the canned and box items were very good ,but it was generally hit or miss. The soy flake imitation hamburger stuff was ok if presoaked then cooked into spaghetti sauce. But straight TVP is terrible. basically like you'd imagine cheap dry dog food nuggets to be like but without any kind of flavor. If someone gave us TVP and we were about out of food we would soak TVP in warm water and Ramen noodle seasoning powder then hide it in gravy and potatoes or vegetable casserole. But it was still pretty unpleasant.

@@judithsixkiller5586 I've been through most of the "health" BS, my mom would literally read about a diet or some being beneficial and that's all I'd be eating until she hears something negative about what we're eating or finds another super food. I distinctly remember her reading about the benefits of cabbage so for 2 weeks it was cabbage soup, cabbage stews, cabbage rolls, fried cabbage, cabbage in the oven even cabbage salads. Then she watched a talkshow with some pseudo doc talking about stomach issues and trying to sell some supplement or other and he says that cabbage can irritate the stomach and cause gas. No sh*t Sherlock, we already experienced that! And she completely switches to potatoes and carrots. I've also been through the eat-according-to-the-stars BS and a moon diet that got me in a hospital because it required you to eat according to the phases of the moon and completely stop eating anything other than water with some lemon juice and honey when the moon is full. Now imagine 100 degree weather and 3 days without food and a significant menstrual flow and me waiting for the bus from school. Let's just say that I apparently passed out, which is always pleasant especially when you hit your head hard enough to rattle your brain.

Our oldest made peanut butter cookies and did half the batch with regular sunflower seeds and the other half batch with candy sunflower seeds mixed in. He made them for his cookie jar project in 4-H and the county fair theme that year was flowers. He also made rose hip oatmeal cookies from a recipe we found in an old cook book at the library. He got a purple ribbon. We raised confectionary sunflowers and the company that came and asked if we would grow them brought all kinds of treats with them to give us....one being the candy sunflower seeds. Shelled seeds with chocolate and a candy shell, like m&m's. Very yummy and went well with the peanut butter cookies

When I baked a lot, I snuck it into everything! It's really good for you. I just used small enough quantities that no one ever realized it was there - it's a delicate balance, but mixed with tasty ingredients, it can be accomplished! I seem to remember grinding it down to a powder, like flour. Not as fibrous, but wheat germ has a host of other benefits that aren't lost in the grinding. Much less wood chippy that way!
