During the period from when he left DT until this concert in 2003, Charlie Dominici hadn't actively sung. This appearance gave him the itch to start making music again. He subsequently release three solo albums and opened for DT three times in 2007.

Thanks for posting this. I was there that night and was floored. After intermission Portnoy said it was the 15th anniversary of When Dream and Day Unite was released - to the day. He asked if we would mind if they played the entire album for us. IIRC it was almost 2 hours into the concert already. Unbelievable. The consolation for those who weren't there: The acoustics at the Pantages Theater are absolutely horrible. Everything sounded like mud.

How great Charlie Dominici sounds, uh? And to think he created the original vocal melodies for Metropolis Pt.1 is even more remarkable. I think DT wasted a big opportunity by not letting Charlie sing the entire WDADU album in this gig. He was great singing Metropolis and To Live Forever, so why not let him sing his original songs as well? Not to mention LaBrie's vocals do not suit the WDADU songs at all (he does an okay job on Afterlife, but everything else I'd much rather have Charlie singing).

So when DT decides to do another reunion gig sometime in the future, there will be Dominici vs LaBrie, Sherinian vs Rudess, and Portnoy vs Mangini (each with his huge set of drums). Far beyond epic it will be.
@GamingDrummer89 Жыл бұрын
For purposes of stage space and not eating up too many microphone channels, I think it'd be a better idea if they did a two-kits-in-one setup for the drums like Portnoy did with his Siamese, Albino, Mirage and Black and Silver Monster kits. This time it would have to be with a mix of Tama, Pearl, Sabian and Zildjian, though, to represent both brands the two Mikes use. Call it the Tama-Pearl Monster, I guess. Just my idea.
@HamRadioConcepts9 жыл бұрын
I have to say as long as i have loved DT, but Charlie is way better in this song compared to LaBrie, i kinda wish The other singer wouldve stayed.. I like LaBrie's growl, but not his high pitch singing..
@JoseMTamez6 жыл бұрын
That's because they write music around each others style, attributes and strengths. Just think if the other guys, especially Sherinian,, would have stayed and continued making music in Dream Theater. It would not be the same band and this is why I wasn't happy about Portnoy leaving and being replaced by Mike Mangini, who is not human by the way, and now Dream Theater is a totally different band. It has nothing to do with one being better than the other. At this level it's all about taste and preference and each player in the current lineup dictates the direction of the band's style, sound, and composition. Of course that's only my opinion, for what it's worth.
