The essential teachings of Buddha was non-violence, kindness, rule of law, human and animal rights, liberty, freedom etc., that so impressed the people in general, that the whole of the civilized world turned Buddhists, voluntarily. Also known as Bodhisattva, the Buddhist mind set, influenced political, social and philosophical thinkers since. The British acceptance of the king being under the law (Magna Carta) not only made the British great, but also changed the whole world. Perhaps they ought to learn some of Buddha's 'kindness'. Evolution has a mind of its own and Buddha personifies the mind of god.
