Fantastic restoration, look like a brand new one, I think that piston can build enough pressure for firing, may be non original ones makes the engine weaker or some kind of bad firing, if you have spark and fuel then the source of problem must be the timing or valves as you mentioned, we are waiting to see that nice engine running as it should.

i have never worked on that model before but if you look at the cam sprocket 3.03 it has 2 horizontal lines 1 at each side they are the timing marks when at tdc they should line up at the top end of the sprocket and be perfectly straight on the hondas i have worked on unless that one is different check if there is other marks around the case that could be timing marks. the other thing did you lap the valves the inlet valve not being sealed right will cause compression loss and smoke back through the carb do you hear like a chugging sound when you pull it over like air escaping when it goes on compression stroke?

Looks great Martin. As for the valve timing, you know when the ignition pick up fires, you know when the piston is at tdc, you know the valves have to be closed at that point, following the suck, squeeze, bang, blow cycle you should be able to work out where the cam position should be at certain points to open and close the valves. Once that's sorted, if it doesn't start, I'd try the old piston. Give me a shout if you get stuck with the timing and I'll try to work it out for you. Cheers.

Right mate. Cam timing. Set the cam to be rocking at tdc. Set ignition to fire before TDC. Put petrol in plug hole, insert plug and it should? run for a few seconds. Great job on this one though. Even if low compression due to wrong piston, should still run.
@bizarreandbrilliant5 жыл бұрын
It is rocking when the lobe is in the bottom position Malc but no joy. Ignition timing is not adjustable so it has to be right.

Cool videos ! If it's puffing outta the intake, no-brainer that the Intake Valve is Open when it should be shut = timing. 4-stroke Sequence :- 1. Piston at (or near) TDC, both valves must be shut, explosion, power. Piston goes down. 2. Piston goes up, exhaust valve is open, all gasses go out the exhaust. 3. Piston goes down, exhaust valve closed, carb valve open. Fuel/air get sucked in from the carburetor. 4. Piston starts to go up, both valves closed, compressing that mixture.
@bizarreandbrilliant5 жыл бұрын
Come on bud. I know all that.

Can’t help on this one Martin, but somebody has the answer.
@dumbrunn5 жыл бұрын
1. Ensure cam timing/alignment: Set piston at tdc and make sure that both valves are closed, then rotate crank about 270deg. Make sure that only the exhaust valve is open (if not rotate 360deg), then rotate it back 270deg and then check that the magneto aligns with the coil. 2. Check that the valves seal properly against the valve seats. Try lapping them in (looks tight). Alternatively you could try making some kind of makeshift leakdown testing setup by just sealing an air hose in the spark plug hole, and then listen where the hissing sound is coming from. This will not only tell if the valves are not sealing but also rule out a concave or oval bore. Hissing from oil plug: piston/bore, from carb: intake valve, Hissing from muffler: exhaust valve etc etc. Good luck!

5:24 welp that seal wont do much, as its spread on the cover edges, while case side has smaller area. Essentially there going be a leak on the longer sides letting air in, that turns engine bit more lean.. and lean is always mean for combustion engine. Next installing the coil, i go by hunch that this particular engine has its factory gap and feeler gauges are not that expensive not to get. Installing the pump... parts were painted to protect them from elements and from rust... why inside the pump is on bare metal that further more seems to be porous casting, that will collect all sort of crap, while full contact with water and this uneven surface wont least help water flow if you want to be perfectionist.
