In the future if you ever do another engine, taking out the spark plug is the first step, always. Then fill with marvel mystery oil. Let it set a day or three before you even try to turn the engine over. Had there still been water in the bore, you could never have budged it, unless you broke something like the vales Water doesn't compress, so always take out the plug so it's got somewhere to go. now just start cleaning it all up. You my need to hone the bore and ge t new rings. You'll need to make or borrow a piston ring compression tool to reisnstal the piston. They're so simple you can easily make one with your skills. Probably new electronics too.

Almost cried with the 2 screwdriver pry routine. The correct answer is a torch to the outside of the jug. The metal expands the piston oozes out.. for funzies you can drop a chunk of dry ice onto the piston. The piston falls out if you chill it. Prying any piston out of a seized engine especially without reaming the ridge takes a lot of life out the cylinder wall.

These Honda mini 4 strikes are gems, I'm especially fond of the pushrod 1st gen Honda mini 4 strokes, I have made cams, timing belt sliders, & other mods for these engines, for the OHC newer gen variants. I started with RC plane conversion builds, then added gas bicycles to that list & you can get them to make multiple times their stock power if you persevere at it. These little engines are bullet proof, especially the pushrod, GX22 & GX31 variants, the newer OHC ones are excellent though they use a timing belt which is their weakness, you must replace the timing belt accordingly or they'll break and or bend valve(s).

Through boating Martin, I learnt that being underwater doesn't hurt an engine, as long as it's not running when submerged. The damage is done when it's taken out and left. We've had a few sunken boats (well friends have) just fuel and oil change on diesels and usually started straight up. Petrol's of course needed ignition stuff cleaning. Couple of yards underwater and nothing rusts, because of no oxygen.
@gravytrainoutdoors5 жыл бұрын
If you do another small motor with a stuck piston, try pulling the spark plug and spraying a good penetrating oil in then cylinder. I use a cylinder leakdown tester to pressurize the cylinder and force oil past the rings. It’s amazing how well it works! Great videos! Subbed!
@bizarreandbrilliant5 жыл бұрын
I didn't want to lube the piston as I wanted to see the inside as it was left after all these years. Thanks for the sub.

Those engines are a good engine, I bought one and gave it to my father to pull water out of a stream for his garden. From memory they can lift water to something like 150 feet. You need to make friends with the Evaporust people, that stuff is very good at cleaning up rusty parts, I use it all the time.
@glennmoreland64575 жыл бұрын
If you get another project like this Martin... Strip it down to a short block then launch it into a tub of hot oil... Don't forget...you can always heat up a bit of oil...then tip it down the spark plug hole as well... Free up allsorts will that caus just prying at it will bend or twist a rod dead easy... Personally..i think this one's dead... Go on...surprise us...👍
@bizarreandbrilliant5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know all that Glenn but Yes, I would have done that if I was just doing a vid to get it going. The intention of this video is to take this engine and actually see what has happened inside without doing anything to it to see how it had suffered being under water and left. Adding a lubricant to the bore wouldn't have gave me the internal video footage I got when we looked inside the bore. so that's why I didn't lube the bore as I normally would have done first.
@VikingRul3s5 жыл бұрын
Well probably. The problem is that there are only few people with the required skill and they usual charge per hour, so it's rarely the economical choice to restore a dead engine over buying a new. But always interesting to watch 👍

That parting shot of the stripped-down layout evoked a very Dystopian scene. Our hero is standing on a small ridge, surveying the vast, desolate wasteland. Cratered, rocky expanses scattered with blasted, scraggy trees, carcasses of dead animals strewn hither and yon, and faint wisps of smoke and steam flitting in the bleak twilight. The only intrusion into this cataclysm is the eerie hiss and moan of the constant wind, a soulful backdrop to the fatalism of the panorama below. Will our hero find His El Dorado? Will he conquer the forces of evil ahead? Will he prevail over these insurmountable odds? Tune in for the gripping conclusion, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

Its a bit rough, but utility engines will run and hold up even with a fair bit of wear and damage. The tolerances are quite generous and they typically aren't working very hard for their size compared to say, a motorcycle engine which will often make 4-5 times the power from the same displacement. So long as the bearing and sealing surfaces of the valves and bore aren't too pitted up it should come back to life pretty easily.
