I’ve just discovered your videos Malcolm and am delighted. At last I have found someone who can teach me “loose” painting. I lived in the Eastern Cape for many years and now live in the UK. Your painting style captures what I remember beautifully. Thank you. I look forward to watching more.

Yes indeed Malcolm your emphasise on darks and shapes building through medium to light and highlights is very encouraging. I am having a go at this and hopefully will improve my attempts. Thanks for your tips and instruction. Warner today in Scotland.

Hello Malcolm.... I am new at acrylics and have a picture of me and my little boy, walking on a lane surounded by trees and high grasses etc... Is it possible that I send it to you so you can paint it and maybe give me an idea of how to do it? If yes, where can I send it to?? Greetings from The Netherlands, Esmeralda & Kay I want to go big! and landscape setting (the canvas) :)

Does anyone ever look at their own abstract or impressionist art and go 'its wrong' but you see someone else's and you just respect their style

@@MalcolmDewey in struggling with that a bunch right now, I see others and think the take is awesome but mine I just think it's lazy and should be proper realism
@MalcolmDewey3 жыл бұрын
@@WilfNelson1 neither approach is lazy or great - it comes down to which approach resonates with you. If you visited an art museum which approach attracts you instinctively? I was attracted to Impressionism the moment I saw it. I love the Old Masters like Rembrandt, but Impressionism in some form pulls me in. The rest is practice ...
@WilfNelson13 жыл бұрын
@@MalcolmDewey yeah I think that's a lot of it. Impressionist is a beautiful style imo because it brings up that memories are treasured and amazing to us but they are hardly photo realistic and instead they are blurry and filled with movement and emotion. That is what I like. Plus I get bored of a painting around the 2 hour mark and quicker styles are good for that

I've really enjoyed watching your videos. I've been trying to loosen up my painting. I think my paint is part of my issue. It's not loose enough and so I find myself having to add oil which I don't particularly want to do. What brand of paint do you reccomend for a nice smooth buttery texture?
@MalcolmDewey4 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gina. Excellent student paints like Maimeri Classico or Van Gogh by Royal Talens can be used direct from the tube.

Hi, I just found you , thank God, for I need a lot of help with values and colour mixing. Would you kindly tell me what you added to the whilte at 13:38 to make your lights? Thought I heard cad yellow but it looks more like ocre. Thank you!
@MalcolmDewey2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes it is mostly yellow ochre. There may be a touch of yellow lemon, but mostly ochre.

I'm using water mixable oils, I don't particularly like using water so I use linseed. So if I were to do a 'lean' underlayer I would add linseed, and then as I progress into more 'fat' I would use less and less linseed?
@MalcolmDewey3 жыл бұрын
I have not tried that approach. Interested to hear how it works for you though. Should be okay. Let me know.
@sameehakhaliq83275 жыл бұрын
What colours do you use for distant trees? 2 question:I have an issue. Sometimes distant trees seem dark other time light and dull
@MalcolmDewey5 жыл бұрын
Usually cerulean blue, a touch of lemon yellow and white. It depends on what I see in the scene. It could be more violet so alizarin plus blue and white. Keep colors clean. Also too much white makes colors cold and lifeless. Color notes and relationships to other colors is all important.
@sameehakhaliq83275 жыл бұрын
@@MalcolmDewey thank you Sir. Well in my country, above blues are not available only ultramarine, cobalt and Prussian blue are. And besides I see many artists they say we maje every colour with: ultramarine blue, yellow, red and Brown, is it true? I hardly get good green with ultramarine and yellow mid or lemon.
@MalcolmDewey5 жыл бұрын
@@sameehakhaliq8327 Cobalt is a cool blue so that will work. For the rest keep practicing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2nTlHacocxjjck
