Got to see Bobby perform this live in August, 1966. He was one of the "warm-up acts" which preceded The Beatles' concert at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The irony of it was, the night before, it was raining so hard that they had to postpone the concert until the next day at noon. It turned out to be a beautiful, cloudless and sunny day and Hebb opened the show with this number. Talk about irony. Ah, the memories.

@@sunneehennessee6003 Came out in 1966. It was so popular, the radio stations played it a lot, right thru the mid seventies, so I heard it the whole time I was growing up, I was born 1960. Both my parents were into music, so they played the radio anytime we went somewhere in the car, so I got turned on to all the great songs of the 60's. That why I asked my mom to buy me a portable record player in 1970. It was red and white plastic and folded shut like a suitcase and only played 45's, and my mom bought me 4 records with it, Satisfaction by the Stones, Light my Fire by the Doors, Ain't no Mountain High Enough by Dianna Ross and the Supremes, and Tears of a Clown by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, I was so excited about. having my own record player! I heard this song back in the early 1980s while riding in the car with my mom. I was about ten or eleven then and it was a bad time in our life. Recession, racial backlash, nightmares of Vietnam and Korea and divorce. But when this song played, I saw my mother for the very first time sing, cry, and smile all at once. She then told me it was her favorite song and it was the song she and my father danced to when they met and wed. Then I remembered something. The day they finalized their divorce, my father came home to gather the last of his things. My parents remained civil (for my sake) but even at the age of five, I could see they were both hurting inside. They kissed each other on the cheek and then hugged each other. Just before my father walked out he said something to my mother. She paused and went over to the HiFi (yeah I'm old) and pulled a record out of its sleeve. They slow danced for what seemed like an eternity in front of me. I still didn't appreciate what was going on. When the record stopped my father gave me a hug and kiss and grabbed his suitcase and rushed outside. My mother then took the record and slowly threw it in the trash. Although I didn't remember the lyrics I do remember the melody, it was "Sunny". It still grabs my heart...

This is a wonderful, bittersweet story, thank you for sharing it with us. I feel like I can see your parents slow dancing to this, like a scene from a movie. So fitting that the song itself is a bittersweet one, celebrating life and loss. Maybe it is too personal to ask but I would love to know how your parents life played out, whether they found love with other people. I suppose even if they didn’t they clearly had a deep love for each other even if they couldn’t live with each other.
