So many bittersweet memories with this song. I basically listened to this album on repeat when my mom was in the ICU diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor and given a month at best to live. This song always brings me back to waking up early on the hospital room benches while she was still asleep, putting my headphones in and listening to Diary front to back while walking through the hospital and across the street in the chilly morning weather to buy us both a coffee from a nearby cafe. She's been gone for a while now, and Diary always makes me think of her, but there are a lot of pleasant feelings that come with all the melancholy at the same time. Music is a crazy thing.

Emo is like hardcore, but focusing on melody rather than rhythm. but basically it was 90's indie rock. Emo didn't really survive past the year 2000. I think Jawbreaker is a good emo band.

My Autobiography A Fanfic If you want to get technical you can say that emo never died. There's always been a ton of emo (yes, legitimate emo not "hot topic" whiny post-hardcore) acts throughout the 2000's. You could argue and say emo did die and the newer acts are "emo-revival" but I just consider it emo because emo acts have always been around since the genre started.

I do think that Sunny Day Real Estate was among the post - hardcore movement, change, progression, etc. They helped the development of Emo as did Drive Like Jehu, At The Drive In, and other bands that don't come to mind. However, I never cared for Emo; too "weak" for my tastes; however, to each their own, live and let live. Peace, as it were
