Is it possible to walk to Stonehenge from Salisbury Station? Is there a walking path adjacent to the A360 or A303 that goes straight to the Stones? Thank you

@@binghamguevara6814 please check the map. Just google Stonehenge visit for free. I m thinking to go by car and people said if you travel by car from M 303 you can drive near the Stonehenge and there is a Fargo road where you can walk towards Stonehenge. On the map it says 45 min but it normally it will take 15 min

An alternative venue you could try is Avebury, Wiltshire. That’s a nice little village, probably well known to American tourists, and it’s close to Silbury Hill.

This is a quality briefing (I've lived & worked near Stonehenge for 35 years)! I imagine that visitors from the USA are on a tight schedule, which is a shame. If I were in your place I'd visit Stonehenge and the city of Bath, via a couple of hours at Stourhead, the National Trust house & gardens (10-12 miles West of Stonehenge). The house is grand, the gardens are spectacular and the facilities are 1st-Class!

Thank you for the suggestion! I actually revisited on a coach two weeks ago because my mother was visiting. We combined it with Bath. Such a long day from London but worth it for her because Stonehenge was number one on her list when visiting London. Too bad it was raining a bit though. I imagine the tourists are intense year round for people there. Do you have ways to get around all the traffic?

@@Sunny_in_London At the Southwest-bound, Amesbury roundabout (A303), turn North (A345) for 1.5 miles. At the 1st roundabout - 1st left (The Packway) and drive (carefully) through Larkhill Garrison and then on for 1-2 miles. Take 1st left (B3086) and after 1 mile, you'll arrive at the Stonehenge Visitors Centre, minus all the traffic (approx. 10 minute detour).

We had a private tour guide pick us up in Windsor. We stopped in Castle Combe, then went to Bath for a few hours (lunch), then got to Stonehenge early afternoon. One to 2 hours was plenty of time, IMO. She walked us around and gave a lot of great info which was very cool. It was a wonderful day, not rushed at all and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Although we didn't get a tickle...LOL :)

I took the Evan Evans tour bus from Victoria Coach Station to Stonehenge a couple of years ago, but we went to Bath first and then Stonehenge. I took the shuttle from the visitor center to Stonehenge but next time I think I'd like to soak up the whole Stonehenge experience and walk the mile and a half to Stonehenge. My only dissapointment was before hand I thought I was going to be able to actually walk around the structures and touch them and stuff, but then I realized there was actually a barrier around Stonehenge - but nevertheless I was still able to take lots of great selfies :)

Hello my friend! Thank you again for commenting. Apparently they changed it because people were actually trying to chisel rock and take home ‘souvenirs’. I think the first time I was there (1995) you could walk closer. I wanted to walk as well but thought I might cut it close with the time on the tour.

I would imagine for UK residents it's something they would do only on a field trip as children and never again lol. Maybe I'm wrong... I'm researching for our trip in 2023 (hopefully). Stonehenge is a LONG way from London, especially to see some rocks. I wasn't too sure it would be that exciting, but my husband said he may like to add it to our itinerary. There are lots of tours that offer it, but he thinks he wants to DRIVE. I admit I'm a little scared of that idea, but he's insisting he can handle it. He wants to be able to stop along the way and so we can do our own thing. I actually found another person's video where that's exactly what they show - the drive there (only sped up so it's a 10 minute video).

Hi Sunny, If you're into history, or more precisely prehistory, and have a car, I'd recommend taking a couple of days to explore the area around Salisbury and Stonehenge. I have a soft spot for Stonehenge, and before the new visitor centre I would stop by on my way to the New Forest, and occasionally have had a picnic there, but my favourite stone circle is at Avebury, about 24 miles away. Avebury is a huge henge (ditch) which surrounds the village of Avebury, and has a stone circle along the inside perimeter. The stones are huge and there's no barrier so you can walk around, touch the stones, have a druid wedding there etc. Julian Cope (lead singer of The Teardrop Explodes) did a documentary on prehistoric Britain about 18 years ago, if you ever get to see it it's worth the watch as his enthusiasm is infectious, and he very eloquently describes what the prehistoric Avebury would have looked like. Silbury Hill is also there (which is a man made hill, and just looks spooky) and a short walk away is West Kennet Long Barrow. Close by is the town of Malborough, a lovely old market town. And if you're really into prehistory and wish to travel a little further afield, take in Uffington White Horse and Wayland's Smithy. Unfortunately I always drive to these places so I couldn't recommend how to do it by public transport. And if you're really really into prehistory, (and somewhere that is just stunning) get to the Orkneys off the north coast of Scotland. Couldn't recommend it highly enough.

That depends on what you like to do. York, including the national rail museum (free) and Castle Howard, Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay, Harrogate, Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough and the North Yorkshire Moors. Then there is Bronte country and the numerous locations for TV programmes like Last of the Summer Wine, Heartbeat. This is just an handful there is much much more

Sorry can't help with places to drink and eat but there are a few breweries in Yorkshire, including many real ale breweries. You could try Betty's Tea Rooms in Harrogate, I've never been but it's been around for 100 years so must be OK. Both Harrogate and York will be pricey because they are tourist locations.
