Breaking my 'no flying in urban environment' rule for a last chance to capture stills of the 'Blue Cube', Onizuka Air Force Station, before it's completely torn down. Flown with a QAV500 Radio Controlled Helicopter. 4/20/2014 37.40474, -122.02858

Thanks for this video. Stationed there in the 60's and 70's. Hate to see the old lady go. Saw my first Hard Drive in The Cube. It was in its own room, in a plexiglass box. It was a drum, 2 feet long. 10 inches in diameter with sliding heads and held a whopping 5 megabits of data. We have come a long way since then.

Heartbreaking to see it all gone. Worked in CE in the cube for 5+ years, scheduling all the maintenance for the entire base and at Moffett. So many great memories of such wonderful times and fantastic people both Air Force Personnel and Civilian. The 4th of July picnics, Christmas and Thanksgiving potlucks, Earth Day and just the everyday cheerful smiles from all across the base. My job job as a scheduler was the most memorable job for me working with each and everyone across the base. Broke my heart to have to leave once Onizuka ended up on the Brack List but times change. Memories for all of us, never to be forgotten.

Awesome! My memories of the Blue Cube were being born and raised in 1953 in Monta Vista (Plumbing), I grew up seeing the Blue Cube. After getting my Journeyman Plumbers card in Local 393 in 1978, I was dispatched out of an outside contractor to report to the security shack out at Lockeed. After waiting there and getting badges for about a half an hour every morning, the first morning I was surprised that I was shuttled to the Blue Cube where this would be my mission. My fellow worker and I had a Security personnel each to stay with us all day long everyday while we worked there installing chilled water lines under a new computer floor. The Security person was even to follow us into the bathroom, except for the individual stall. I was proud to serve my country even though I was nothing like the employees whom did their job everyday. Now I live on the Big Island of Hawaii where Ellison Onizuka was born and is celebrated in many spots on this island for his Heroism. Aloha, Paul

That was an amazing video. Working at the Cube was my first and most interesting California employment. Watching the area around the Cube evolve to where it is today has been quite an experience and this video captured the changes so well. An era has ended, but the memories linger. Thanks for letting us take a walk back to one of the most unique places that has ever been.

I was stationed at what was then described as the Air Force Satellite Test Center, housed within an adjacent Lockheed Corporation building that supported we active duty Air Force types. I spent 3 years there, from 1967-1970, as a USAF Instrumentation Technician maintaining video equipment and a Cesium Beam timing system that supported the tracking and control of low orbit satellites. I witnessed the early parts of the construction of the 'Blue Cube' amid speculation as to its ultimate true purpose. This video brought back some vivid memories. Thanks for sharing.

The Blue Cube was the best place I ever worked in for little over 5 years as a contractor in CE until the closing of the base. Met so many wonderful people. I am still friends with a number of them. It was hard to see it torn down. Such a loss for the Bay Area. Mrs. Onizuka spoke at the closing ceremony. God bless her. May we all keep our wonderful memories of a very special place! .

Thanks for the great video of the Blue Cube. I arrived in Sunnyvale in early 1966 from the Pentagon to work in Complex Seven. From then until I finally retired in April of 2000 I supported the operations in Complex Seven and Building 190 as active duty Air Force. From 1979 until 2000 I supported operations from General Election and then Geodynamics corporations. It was definitely an E Ticket ride.

Worked there Dec '88 to Dec '89 on field assignment for my company. During the 2nd half of my assignment I was working on moving one of the closed rooms to a different floor. I was in my office on Borregas Ave. when the earthquake hit. When the shaking stopped we deployed all our Field Techs to the Cube to help them get our rooms back operational and to check for any damage. I spent many long hours working in that building during that room move, often averaging close to 80 hrs a week.

The redundancies to keep systems running was amazing. The smaller building with the 12 stacks coming out was the powerplant. 12 turbines, which at initial opening, any 2 turbines could run the whole facility. Those turbines could run on several types of fuel. Then there was a huge battery storage complex. Then normal utility power. And last, if needed, temporary generator trailers could be brought in and connected. Power feeds to critical switchboards were fed from 4 separate sources, going thru a huge rack with Automatic Transfer Switches. Sad to see another iconic structure disappear.

Very nice perspective of the Blue Cube. I always thought it was a deeper building than that, but I only see it from one perspective that of exiting 237 at Mathilda (too lazy to drive around to the other side, I guess). The 237 corridor has changed tremendously over the last year or so, there are so many new buildings going up. I'm not sure what is going into the former Blue Cube area, but I'm sure it is going to be more, and more office space. There sure isn't any economic recession in Silicon Valley for sure.
