Hello Art-family,
For this demo I wanted to talk about some texture tools that I love. My main tool is the side of the brush for raking texture but I also love my pocket knife for scraping texture as well as adding highlights after. What kind of tools do you prefer? Do you carry a sponge or object? I always tell my workshop students that have concerns about the "rules" or "purity" of watercolor that I'd even use a stick on the ground if it made an interesting enough texture.
Thanks for watching! See you in the next one...
Happy sketching,
Jared

i'm just curious .. wouldn't it be a bit " safer" to use a palette knife , instead of actual little pocket knife?? it seems like it would be too easy to cut a bit too deep with a blade of any kind .. a palette knife wouldn't be as harsh to the paper.. no?? ( or a credit card, even).... i'm just curious about that.. thanks ,as always , for your videos, Jared.. i look forward to them :-)) ( norakag on instagram)

arcuda2001 I suppose it would be safer but you wouldn’t be able to cut away paper for highlights if you wanted. I also have an old membership card I use for the same effect. I like the stiffness of the pocket knife and I don’t really use the point of the knife- just the front side close to the end to scrape. I’ve never cut the paper.

Great demonstration Jared thanks for sharing. You're getting great results with the pocket knife - when did you bring it into your tool set? I use one with a dull, rounded blade because I have cut the paper too often with the style that you have used in the demo. Good scraping takes practice and you do it well. Nice piece.

I've actually carried it for a long time but I often forget I have it. haha I also have a razor blade I usually remember I have right after I finish a sketch and put everything away. haha

Watching the video, it must have been a little earlier since I dont see sleeves on your arms. Looked like a beautiful morning scene and warm enough to enjoy painting outdoors. I always enjoy the bits you show us like the pure red added to the trees and the adjustments. I know you said that you always use cold press but it would be interesting to see you use the rough paper too. Recently for my birthday, I placed an order at Jacksons art supplies for some brushes that I would really like and added some Bockingford rough paper in spiral form to try. Now it is wait for it to come across the pond and then head for Texas. Here when they strip the fields it is mainly cotton, but just north of us there is plenty of corn and maize. Glad you added the birds, after they strip there is always plenty left in the fields for the birds. We really get overloaded with Canadian geese but this year for some reason not so many. Guess the warmer weather has slowed them down this year. Thanks for the video, hope your new pet is working out well for your family, Happy Holidays.

Yes! I have been in crunch mode on finishing my book for my editor so I have been posting from a bank of pre-recorded demos i was saving for such an occasion. I'm out now and will be back to recording in the moment videos. I would love to try rough some time. I just need to take the dive and give it a shot. The new little bird seems to be doing well. He's really bonding with my wife- who is really who he is for, and does great with the kids. :)

This is really great. I appreciated your attention to the light. And the tip about using a knife or blade. But mostly just hearing how you thought your way through the scene, highlighting what caught your attention and being intentional about what you wanted to emphasize. Thanks for sharing your knowledge here.
