Congratulations for the whole Orchestra. These two most difficulty Tone Poems played on one evening? Breathtaking and extremely beautiful. I wished i could have joined this concert. To all Musicians on stage that evening : Strauss up there listening , enjoyed that concert very much. i am sure.:-) i also enjoyed very much the interview with Gillian Moore .... as a member of the Richard Strauss foundation i have to say ...thx very much to all of you great great Musicians.....

I attended this and thought it was wonderful. The 'sweet' sections were particularly sweet. When the music reached the 'summit' of complexity it felt like things were escaping slightly and there was a shrill note here and there, but overall it was transportive, with the 'hunting' brass and disembodied cowbells seeming to come from another dimension, and a pleasant atmosphere at the Royal Festival Hall. There were many rounds of applause at the end, with most of the audience standing up to thank the performers.

I actually approved of the off stage Horns not being off stage. I got the hair dryer treatment and they completely nailed it. Laurence Davies was magnificent. So risky coming in that quietly after the Organ, but so effective. And he took no prisoners in the next passage. Looked like the F alto was coming into its own. He should have been asked to stand up. Bravo to one and all!

Playing both pieces back to back? Quite the workout for the orchestra. As for the interpretation: I like the way Rouvali seems to favour clarity and tries to open up every layer in the score. But that comes with a price. The tempi in the more fiery sections seem a bit too controlled to me. It lacks the passion it needs and sounds a little too much like an orchestral etude. That is especially noticeable in the transition into the Dance Song.
