Our emissions are increasing, and while we are trying to reduce emissions it will not make any difference while China is buying up our cheap coal and burning it. So why don't we reduce some exports and burn it and get cheap reliable electricity.

Plus, Labour is happy to collect the taxes on the coal and gas we sell off shore...much more that we would use...that's going into the environment too. It makes sense to have a mix. But the elephant in the room no one is discussing is that renewable energy is already at a stage where coal, gas (or nuclear) power plants are no longer viable or profitable. Who is going to build, run, and maintain power plants making a loss? Especially if renewable energy production reaches 80%? @@multioptioned you raise a good point although the resources needed for batteries are costly and damaging to the environment. Plus, a hail storm or an electrical fault could easily wipe out a solar panels. Wind turbines only operate at certain wind speeds and need to be replaced eventually too That is why we need a number of options and not just one, including nuclear. I'm not saying not to use renewables, just not fully rely on them.
