This could totally be an episode of Love, Death, Robots. The animation, the story telling, the coloring, even the sound and music, are all beyond so many works you'd find in the market these days. And you can see how the work and dedication the team pour into it. 10/10

What beautiful style! One thing that struck me is that, like many other graduate films, the universal theme of overcoming trauma or a deep sense of adversity is once again the emotional backbone. Each artist explores this in their own miraculous way, yet they are all connected.

As an introvert myself, the cost of isolation as presented here hits home. Humans are not solitary by nature, we need each other's company to stay healthy.

Nowadays space stations are a government outpost. Government offices are the most boring thing ever. Space is not a place to be alone, especially if you are being sent inside a poortable government office. At least if it was private you could invent space parkour or something fun to do.

loved the lineless art style that was still sharp and clearly defined, the way the hash marks briefly fade into view at 0:57, the appearance of the mundane vending machine, the smashed screens that foreshadow the smashing of one more screen, the growing ink blot. big fan of the entire sequence and sound design at 2:54 with the shots of the present synchronized to the music, interspersed with the slow motion view of the past that functions as a mirror of the present. i loved the imagery of basking in the vast glow of the sun, how it makes u feel reborn, weightless and free and made of pure light. the title "sun screen" is very clever - the final shot of the eye shaped "screen" filled with sun at 5:51 evokes the sensation of gazing at a fathomlessly large being, while it gazes back with one bright eye. i hope her transport is solar powered (i think that's why the panels light up at 5:13?) and the reason the sun fills her with so much hope is it means she can finally go back home.

It looks amazing! Such detailed animation must require a lot of work in production…And not to mention how good the backgrounds are. The art of the entire film is very mature, it doesn't look like a student project at all. If there were a movie with this style, it would be fantastic!

As always, the attention to detail in these are insane and absolutely beautiful. The story is simple yet deep and emotional, and its something I love seeing with many of the graduates that come from GOBELINS. Not to mention, the music in this was beautiful. If the music is released I'd love to listen to it some more. Also I've got to say they did an excellent job melding dimensions in this, the use of both 3D and 2D animation and backgrounds was beautifully done in a way that really made it feel organic/natural.

i'm having trouble trying to parse what's going on in this. it looks like the woman is alone and then starts having hallucinations. then she sees light from a star and she continues to hallucinate. but everything else in between is just her hallucinations so.... what is this supposed to be about? what, exactly, are we supposed to know about this character by the end? she desperately needs a psychiatrist, but is there anything else?
@Sad_matt
@Sad_matt 10 ай бұрын
I'll do my best to help explain. I'm not an expert, so take it with a huge grain of salt... we're given the title "Sunscreen" and seeing through to the end we can tell that the sun is certainly important. Everything before the sun shows up is buggy, broken or both. She starts off trying to accomplish a very mundane task and failing (often from several papers shown), while imagery that suggests it's been uncountable days of some event happened. I think from how frustrated she is trying to do this simple thing and how many marks on the wall that she needs the sun just as much as the machines to be fully functional but it's also possible it's just frustration. Next, she's showering in some kind of small hydroponic chamber of sorts. It looks like the only thing on the ship that works, it's got a small successful looking garden and is probably the last spot on the ship that offers comfort/escape. On leaving this, something finally gives. Isolation and hopelessness finally causes a psychotic break (though it's very possible this happens frequently given some clues like broken mirrors, cancel signs drawn on logos etc). I'm not going to get into the psychotic episode... a bunch of glimpses into the past that keep showering little clues to her signing up. There's a moment where it looks like she's hiding with her mother or something, then another moment where someone close slips away, i think the point was to try to express why she may have thought she was a good candidate for this mission. Maybe she has felt a sense of Isolation her while life, and those sort of scenes we catch are enough for us to fill in ourselves. I don't understand the soda machine at 50% off but the can that came out looked like her... I've got a working idea of some kind of one foot in and the other out, 50/50 sold on the plan etc. Either way, escaping all the monitors watching her, the signing her life away and sealing her own fate (perhaps literally as being in a space ship is being sealed in a soda can lol), we see the sun come out. There's some moments that show the character in some transformation state like the sun has imbued supernatural power, but i think this is just emotional insight. The final scenes show she is at some window, normal looking and the sun is in view. All the machines are powered and operational. Perhaps she can finally go home and fix this situation etc. That's all I've got. I probably missed a whole lot of important stuff. There's some great transitions there, like the punching that switches back to the broken mirror. Sort of like not accepting the reality and blaming yourself for what's happened. I don't see too many comments go into any detail like i did, and it can be a little frustrating to see so many comments praise story and animation but not be unpack any of it. I might have it all wrong so if anybody wants to correct me please do it constructively.

@@Sad_matt i like and appreciate your insights. i just can't shake the feeling that no matter what the video shows us, the "unreliable narrator" problem is ever-present. how can we, the viewers, be certain about the accuracy of anything we experience in this video? it might ALL be hallucinations of one kind or another. we're led the believe that the woman is going through a lot, but how do we know ANY of it is really happening to her? for all we know she's perfectly safe and surrounded by her loved ones, but maybe she doesn't realize it? or maybe all the things we see/hear are actually happening, and it's some occult stuff going on that's haunting her at her office job? her farm job? her police job? etc we don't have a base line. we don't have a "real" to go by to compare anything to. all we have is one "crazy" character that could be anyone, anywhere, anyWHEN, who is having hallucinations.... and we're led to believe that we can somehow parse the reality from the fiction.

What makes this film even more interesting is the intense visual combination of Solaris, The Shining and Twin Peaks. There might have been something else that I didn't notice. These references, though undoubtedly intentional, come very naturally and don't feel in any way forced like they often do in modern cinema
