@@larryscott3982 _"…On FE you never see the sun set."_ -Was it Confucius- [EDIT: kudos going to "osci08" - see his response further down] It was *Sun Tzu who said in "The Art Of War"* that you have to _"learn to think like your enemy to defeat him."_ In my experience the biggest problem flat earthers have in this respect is to discern the three *completely different* reasons why we might not be able to "see" (or photograph) something in a distance [EDIT: I'm talking of the ability to SEE something at all, not to recognize DETAIL, which then would require to also include angular resolution]. (a) Diffusion (by dust, fog, etc) (b) Too low intensity (fewer photons as whatever sensor is used is able to detect or reliable discern from noise) (c) Visual obstruction (by a wall, building, a mountain … - or, drum roll - the curve of the earth!) Then they come up with the very general explanation _"but we can only se so far"_ which seemingly builds on everyday experience and from there continue to act like "Mr. Know-It-All". While "seeing" physically is *no active process that extends into a distance* I'm willing to grant they just mean "light DECAYS after having gone some distance", which is a sloppy way of merging (a) and (b) above. But then, instead of attributing the sunset *correctly* to (c) they "explain" it with their already confused mix-up of (1) and (2). When you try to school them with respect to all three, (a), (b), and (c) I found their attention span is too short to listen patiently and try to understand. Instead they jump in with "observations" they (or somebody they point to) has made, e.g. that "Chicago skyline" stuff or the NIR observations published by "JTolan Media". That forces you to deviate to the question to which degree light really goes straight or rather slightly curved and whether their NIR idol has the abability to identify landmarks correctly (see BTSG's most recent video). The more impertinent ones then jump in with assuming you talk of gravitational lensing which has nothing at all to do with refraction by earth's atmosphere. But their goal isn't to really UNDERSTAND their misconceptions but to pull your once clear-cut line of arguments into murky waters so they can claim victory by having "successfully refuted established science" and can call themselves "woke" while trumpeting their nonsense so their followers, who then also feel "special" because of their "open mind" and "thinking outside of the box".

Mittelwelle 531 kHz You give FE club members too much credit. FE is just verbal graffiti and educational vandalism. The FE gurus: “the revenue, the whole revenue, and nothing but the revenue.” Truth and honesty is not part of their diatribe. We all know they describe phenomena in ways that are not observed. eg; eclipses, they describe things that do not happen: ships hulls and zooming, sun circling over a disc. etc. Antarctica is lie. Gravity is fake. Space is fake. They ignore physics. They use vocabulary that they don’t comprehend and construct non-sequiturs ad nauseam. They insult the academics that brought them the technology that they use. It’s their brand of entertainment. They’re clowns without makeup. We all flat isn’t even a defendable hypothesis. The globe Earth model was based upon repeatedly verifiable evidence in the first place, rather than on some kind of conspiracy. And conspiracies, such as those mooted by Mark Sargent, are only based upon things such as Hollywood movies. However, a classic example of a conspiracy theory with absolutely no basis in truth was the UK TV production 'Alternative 3' from 1977. It should be noted that summer 1976 in the UK had been uncommonly hot, as well as protracted. This fact was used to substantiate the assertion that the world was coming to an end. 'Alternative 3' made the claim that scientists were being ferried off to the moon & Mars, because the authorities were trying to save some of humanity from extinction.

I just realized something the other day. I posted on Facebook the information of when the ISS (space station) was going to be visible. I had both family and friends (some living about 100km north and about 100km south of me), wanting to know the details of the time, directions and angle of elevations. It dawned on me that the ISS was about 1 degree of difference between me and the people south and north of me (about 2-3 degrees between the most northern and southern of the people around me). Having such a small angle between people who were so far apart, the ISS would have to be VERY far away. Sadly, this is something so simple that even FEers could even do and figure out. Hmmmm...if only there was a way to communicate to a large number of people and organize an experiment to measure the distance (or size) to the ISS (or other celestial objects).
@wolfganglaun23195 жыл бұрын
It has been done. Here is one YT video: watch?v=2zejiHaRhI4 which I've seen and found OK. Searching for "measuring distance of ISS" will find more results. You can also brush the rust from your math and look up the data for an ISS passage, best from locations on the same meridian, and try to make the elevations match, assuming (a) a flat, (b) a spherical Earth. Note that the locations would have to be along a sector of a meridian not more than 4,000 km apart because from the ISS the horizon is at a distance of ~2,200 km.

Muru Roa It’s almost the same as religious belief. And, in many case, comes from it. The need to belong to a special group. The need to feel special - they ‘know’ something the rest of us don’t. And the one they can’t change, the lack of analytical ability (believe it or not, low IQ) whereby they aren’t able to comprehend all of the things that must be confirmed to prove flat or globe. How many times have we heard “I can’t see the curve, so it’s flat.” Or “I can’t feel it move so it isn’t moving.”? They think this is all they need to ‘prove’. The problem with this is that there are dozens of things to do with the observable sun and moon that don’t match the flat earth model, but they can’t see it. You can also read up on the Dunning Kruger Effect. It comes from the idea that those with less knowledge think they know just about everything they need to know vs. those with lots of knowledge realize they know very little of what there is to know. It’s not just one thing driving these people. Enjoy your journey into the mind of a flat earther. It’s fascinating and a bit scary. David Dc according to FE nonsense. In real life it does set and disappear behind the horizon. If it moved away there would be a large reduction in angular size large meaning it would be reduced to about a third of its actual size. None of this is visible. I have been taking photos of the sun for 20 years. Measured it’s angular size many times in different positions. Same goes for the Moon.

I think it was in Freemantle. I wonder if my pic is still there. This was in like 2012 or 2013, so I dunno if it would be. They took soooo long to make my burger. My dead cow was extremely graphic. @FriendsforFriendsUK5 жыл бұрын
Karim el Baradie. The light from the sun reaches your eye both directly (so we see the disc of the sun) and indirectly via diffusion ( the blue of the sky). The blue of the sky and the bright glow in the direction of the sun at sunrise all consist of light diffused by the atmosphere. The pattern of diffusion is not even: more light is scattered through small angles: this causes the brightness seen closer to the sun's disc. Less light is scattered through larger angles: this is the glow that seems to be further from the sun's disc. In short: the variations in brightness are not due to distance from the sun but due to the angles of scattering.
