Sunset Photography in the Lake District overlooking Derwentwater from Walla Crag in Keswick. Thanks to Stuart McGlennon for his tips on this location , if you dont know Stuart go check out his youtube channel here
/ stuartmcglennon
and his webiste for his Gallery in Keswick here
www.lensdistrict.com/
I had some issues on this one with lens flare and because of the location the huge bright spot in the lake is a little distracting if im honest and detracts from the image somewhat, however its how it is, its a stunning location and one i recommend any landscape photographer visit if they are ever in the area.

Fantastic conditions for photography Lee - cracking shots and I loved the drone fly around at the end.

Sensational vlog here Lee!, loved this location mate. Sometimes with flare ill take two shots with the first one with my hand covering the top half of the image then second a faster exposure for the sun, dosent all ways work lol. That image @13:39 was just magic mate.

Thanks Jeremy , really is a stunning place up there , i think i was not really thinking straight at the time i should have used my whole hand or my filter wallet to block out the sun rather than a single digit!! Not a huge variety of compositions up there as your basically shooting down to Derwentwater but i really enjoyed just being there at sunset, it was a great evening, thanks for the comment mate, take care :-)

Great video Lee! Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions for sun flares, I rarely shoot with the sun in my photos. It's usually just out of frame, behind a cloud, or below the horizon. Beautiful views in every direction from up there! Strange seeing you in a jacket in July after the temps you've just had! That 360-degree drone footage was amazing! Sun flares or not, some really beautiful images you got from up there mate, but they kept getting better and better as the sun set behind the fells. Grat stuff as always! I was really looking forward to this one and it didn't disappoint!

Thanks Paul, I agree the shots later in the evening were better no flare or large hotspot in the lake , the weather was typically changeable in the lakes ! Great area I just wish I lived closer. Glad you enjoyed it , thanks for watching 👀!

Well done you for hauling your gear up there ,worth it indeed for those views 👏 Shame about the sunflare ,it's the thing that makes me shoot away from the sun 😄

Thanks Lynne , I don't think the two filters I had on helped at all with the flare but lesson learned, still fantastic views , I had a great time! 👍

The lens flare can be a real problem, even more so with filters on. Maybe a lone lens with a hood and pano the image might help. You could take a shot after sun had set then blend or leave it in. Sometimes I will remove the flare a little in photoshop. Bracketing helps I think rather than filters. Great video mate, love the location.

Thanks Steve , yes think I probably should have removed the filters and bracketed , there was no real need for a cpl it just happened to be screwed to the front of the filter holder , wasn't thinking straight at the time obviously ! Is a fantastic location, I'll just have to return to ! It's only a 7 hour drive away or so on a good day !

Always my favourite location up there in the Lakes Lee but not done Walla Crag yet surprisingly ! Just loved this film from beginning to end, great b roll , drone footage and images - some beautiful light up there and lovey colours on the heather too 💜 looked a great wander and if you were out of breath in this one I’m sure you were panting some more up Cat Bells 😂 Can’t believe my last film was Cat Bells 12 months ago but hopefully I can put one together soon. No tips other than the old finger trick and cloning mate ! Great stuff and look forward to Cat Bells video 👍🏻👋🏻

Thanks Andrew really appreciate that, it's a fantastic location and one I would not have visited on this trip if it wasn't for meeting Stuart at his gallery , he recommended it and so glad I took his advise . Glad you liked it and yes catbells was another story , as you know having done it yourself, for sunrise this time of year was a early alarm and starting the assent with a head torch , great fun ! 12 months since you did it , wow that time just goes, scary, hope your well take care mate 👍

Beautiful location and images Lee. The lens flare is pretty unavoidable when the sun is that high in the scene, sometimes filters can make it worse, particularly if you have more than one, and I have often gotten better results taking filters off and bracketing exposures if required (also using the finger over the sun trick). Other than that you can try and clone the flare out or, probably better, make a feature of it and use it as part of the image. I think the images you have with the flare in look good and the flare adds something to the scene

I’ve been wanting to head up Walla for a while but keep thinking ‘next time’ - where did you park? Great Wood side (at the bottom near the lake) or nearer to Castlerigg?….Stuart’s shop is another ‘keep meaning to’ visit I must make. Great views up there Lee and a couple of cracking compositions. I’ve used the thumb technique and had varying results with it but it’s probably the best way I know of dealing with it in camera.

Hi Dave, its a great location up there and i am sure over the next week to ten days the heather will be really starting to show , Stuart was very helpful and gave me the parking spot, go past the campsite at Castlerigg , single track road that just ends by the farm gate, but just as it does there is a spot for about two cars, i was lucky and got in there no problem and i have a large Mondeo titanium x. Short but steep walk up but lovely views.

Nice one lee, a really beautiful location that ! Lens flare is a tricky thing, my solution is probably not a helpful one but I choose not to shoot it and instead position myself for side lighting mainly. If I have to shoot it I make sure my lens and filters are as clean as possible to help reduce it ! Ended up with some lovely images though fella

Hi mate, it really was a stunning location, the heather was out in small patches but another week or so and it will be in full bloom im sure, sadly not able to get back up there so soon ! The flare was an issue as was the huge highlight in Derwentwater , i found this a little distracting , but a fantastic location and i had a great time !

Great video Lee, with regards to lens flare I'm really not sure of any hack to avoid it. I have noticed that some lenses do much better than others, I normally bracket my images these days so if I were to shoot into the sun, in that image I would stop the aperture down to maybe f14 to get a nice sunburst effect then the other two exposures focus foreground and midground etc.. but you still might get lens flare depending on the lens! Very hard to say... 😂🤷

I did a video on it the other week about how it’s your brain going into auto pilot, it’s really common, I genuinely don’t have the epic landscapes to shoot though lol. I have an abundance of seascapes, woodland, moorland, cityscapes, I suppose you can’t have everything 😂

Great video Lee - fantastic images throughout and spectacular drone footage too. Regarding lens flare, I tend to use a mixture of content-aware fill and the clone stamp tool in post. I made a video a little while back on it actually: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5vUcpysgNCfhdE
