Sunset Shimmer: The Rise (and fall)

I adore Sunset Shimmer. She is literally the reason I got into the MLP community in the first place. (I watched all of EQG before I even saw anything from FIM). She is one of my favorite characters in any piece of media ever. Her character development is fantastic! I even cosplayed as her this past Halloween, lol. I never noticed that Sci Twi was stealing Sunset Shiimmer's spotlight but now that you mention it yeah Sci Twi was the main character of EQG it's sad because Sunset was a weak villian but when she became a hero she had so much potential it's sad that Hasbro didn't trust Sunset to carry EQG

Sci Twi is not the main character of EQG, Sunset Shimmer is just by looking at the Equestria Girls specials intros

@brettfrost6828 You didn't watch the video. I posted promotional material for each special. That was when they tried to double dip by putting Sci Twi as the center of advertising while also having Sunset feature heavily as the "main character" in the specials. It didn't work. Sci Twi was identifiable because of Twilight being the main character of Friendship is Magic. They didn't trust Sunset to be the sole carrier of EQG. The specials were already going further down the route of not trusting Sunset. That's why they featured ponies heavily. Because the writers were already of the opinion that they couldn't just use the humans anymore and that using ponies would garner more attention. And it did, but not because fans wanted EQG. They just wanted more pony. It's essentially what killed Eqg. Sunset may have been the "main character' in your eyes, but not in the eyes of the marketing or writing teams.

I absolutely love Sunset Shimmer. She is the best character from Equestria Girls with the best character development next to Starlight Glimmer and Tempest Shadow. Sad her character arc didn't get completed with the EG series left on a cliffhanger. But no matter, I will still love Sunset Shimmer as my absolute favorite Equestria Girl ever. ❤️💛❤️💛☀️🥰😊

rainbow rocks being peak for sunset is soo true!! as someone who has very recently gotten into equestria girls i can tell you freshly and first hand that as i was watching the movies in order i finished rainbow rocks and i vividly remember thinking "wow i really like sunset" and shes been my favorite ever sinceee🤭 and sci twi always made me unreasonably mad and its not her character so much as her mere existence and replacing pony twilight just like so easily with what i think is a flanderized version of her. and stealing sunsets spotlight just adds another reason to not like her 😭 omg and sunset's solo songs, "let it rain" and "my past is not today" are some of the best equestria girls songs imo (alongside the rainbow rocks songs those are firee) and while im on a sunset shimmer rant, i quite liked forgotten friendship it was pretty solid and i really loved how the reunion with celestia and then the ending where she sacrifices herself showed sunsets character a lot!!

It was an incredible development she had; and now starting to think about the potential that Sunset’s character had, for me she was always the protagonist of Equestria Girls, her character arc carried the entire franchise, is so unique, complex and interesting: with all the life she has lived between both worlds, she learned the magic of friendship in another way and path, different from Twilight (also thanks to her), and the bond she shares with each of her friends is also nice, becoming a better person thanks to them, she has grown but that does not mean that she has nothing more to learn from friendship. I wish that Equestria Girls (in addition to her movies) would have been a series, it had potential, I would have liked to see more of Sunset: like her past and story in Equestria; and over all, what future could await for them, tremendous potential

@@SilvanaPuris2310 I would have like Sunset to pilot Eqg. I don't need to see her past as wanting that belittles her I think. Hence the entire point of "my past is not today". I would have liked Eqg to be completely devoted to her and a series that didn't have to be shackled by FiM so much. Alas, we'll never get that.

You made a lot of good points here about Sunset’s untapped potential! That being said, have you read Sunset Shimmer’s Time to Shine? It’s an official chapter book that takes place after Rainbow Rocks and stars Sunset as she questions her own destiny while seeking Princess Twilight’s guidance. It’s a cute story that gives us a glimpse into what EG would’ve been like with Sunset as the main character without Sci-Twi around ^^

I see we both agree the second movie was great, peak, what's funny is that was the first one I watched, so the first movie was more a prequal movie to me. and that yeah, her potential was sidelined, but she got some great shorts

@@renamon5658 From what I've read, it was more of a time issue. It's hard to fit so many things in 22 minutes. But she does appear behind Twilight in that picture at the end. Every trace of Equestria Girls could be wiped off the Earth tomorrow, and we'd still have Sunset in that shot. Sunset appears in FiM!

Equestria Girls merch is selling overseas, and if it sells well and considering that Gen 5 of the franchise bombed, it wouldn't surprise me if Hasbro goes back to Gen 4 with Equestria Girls

They definitely could've nailed Sunset as the primary lead of EG and fill the same role in the cast that Twilight does for FiM if they had the confidence to stick with her. My experience with EG is probably a bit odd, I basically ignored it for years after I got started with Gen4 because the idea of making humans out of the Ponies for a reason that I never truly understood outside of obviously just selling toy's never sat right with me so I chose not to partake in what I had assumed was a blatant and souless cash grab even by the standards of a cash grab of a series like MLP. Then I finished the show and started going to things like the comics and other side content because I heard that while they aren't canon they atleast had interesting stories, and I got a kick out of most of them. Then I started going into fan content, which is a mixed bag no matter where you look obviously but there is a lot of good stuff that I enjoyed more so than the show itself at times. Then I started seeing Sunset pop up at complete random in fan works and she was almost always treated like a big name with alot of importance, it quipped my interest and after finding out that she originated from Equestria Girls I decided to take a crack at it. I sat through the first movie, questioned more than a few of my life choices and debated with myself on whether or not I should continue before caving in and going through the rest of the series, and I finally saw why Shimmer got the love she did from so many people and why she seemed to take the spotlight of so many works, there's so much potential for her that fans wished was utilised properly. So yeah, I got to know Sunset through fanfics well before I watched the thing she actually debut in, and honestly that's probably given me a better impression of the character than EG itself would've given me.😂

@@MLPDymos honestly same, those are some of my favourites. Funnily enough though alot of people that I've spoken to seem to think that she'd step on Starlight's toes (or hooves I guess) as a character if she were to stay in Equestria, and maybe to an extent... but that's a pretty big maybe, and after going through both EG and FiM through and through there's more than enough differences to make both of them work even without changing much of either of them.
