This is a simple landscape created with a small set of Rembrandt pastels. Start out with a small, inexpensive set to get the feel of working with pastels. They are a wonderful pick ‘em up, put ‘em down medium that doesn’t require tons of time to clean up, so you can spend hours or just a few minutes and easily come back to them later. They are a direct and expressive and combine the sensations of both drawing and painting. Give them a try!

“It’s a great honor to work with students to pass on some of the knowledge I’ve gained from my many great instructors and my own discoveries as a painter. I’m a true believer that the fundamentals of painting combined with our individual voices make painting a uniquely satisfying endeavor. As a teacher, I provide a strong base of the fundamentals of painting to guide every student in reaching their unique artistic intentions in a supportive, nurturing and creative environment.” - Marla

What a wonderful video, so helpful for people just starting to paint in soft pastels! I often think Rembrandts are a good choice to start with, as they can make fine lines as well as swaths of color, and are relatively affordable.

I have sennelier but i bought the Rembrandt Luscious greens 5 pack (gorgeous). I love Rembrandt more than sennelier now and they are far less dusty/messy.

Thank you for sharing this, it looks great. Just one point - you can indeed blend pastels on pastelmat, but not before you have half a dozen layers or so. And it's not as easy with a harder pastel like Rembrandt 😊

Thankyou so much for doing this, especially how to wear the sides of these sticks down before putting it on the paper. I’m a beginner and have been finding it a bit difficult how to use my Rembrandts . I just found you and have subscribed. It was wonderful having something for a complete beginner

I bought this set a couple months ago thinking it might be enough to get started. I got frustrated because all the online artist has such a broader palette and I don't have any instructors close by. I felt stuck until now. Thanks, Marla!

Awesome. This is very useful for beginners. Very cool result. I never bought Rembrandt because I always thought they were too hard. I saved money for unison 😁 and I bought the trial pack of sennelier (love the white), after my father got me gallery semi-hard. I think that if I had a video like this before I would have given Rembrandt a try 😊

Hi. Quick question, is the white opaque enough to go on top of a dark color?

Haha, in my country Remrandt pastel calls like professional. Maybe because other brand like schminke or Sennelier are very very expensive because all brands are imported.

I think you are a very good painter, Marla. And you could do something better than that. Also with Rembrandt pastels...

Rembrandt pastels are to hard for the painting. You should have tried Blue Earth pastels.
