The comment on "untuned instrument" reminds me of a friend's story. Prince was in Detroit, and after a concert was playing pool at the hotel bar, but was coplaining it was too noisy for him. My friend's father invited him to his house to play pool there, and indeed, at like midnight these limos appear and Prince comes in with a few others and down to the basement he went to play pool. My friend was like 7 and didn't know who Prince was. His teenage brother would have been interested but was asleep (it was a school night). However, Prince picked up the brother's guitar, noted it was out of tune, and tuned it. So the brother woke up to a guitar tuned by Prince in his basement the next morning.

I saw Prince play live 40 times from 1986 including 17 times on the Nude tour in 4 countries a nd I met him 3 times. Prince was my life at one point. I met my first girlfriend at a Prince concert, I met my 2 best friends at Prince concerts. I loved the man, he was a monster on stage, sublime on record and a beautiful energy in person

I was a freelance sound engineer during the late 80s and early 90s. Nothing special, very modest stuff. However, I can tell you from personal experience that female engineers were VERY unusual. Generally it was a very male oriented business. Dr Rogers is brilliant, and it’s wonderful that Prince and Sunset gave her the space to work and prosper in that role. 👍👍

I grew up in the 70’s loving music and then came of age in the 80’s and Prince was mine, of my time bought with some of the first money I earned. Maybe the first artist that was mine as an accident of time and awakening. His music became so private to me and gave me the adrenaline to perform in sports. Being a gymnast is a solitary pursuit and you would need music through a Walkman to center you, isolate you and fire you up for performance or simply giving you courage for trick that will break or make you. No music from that time centered me for performing and it holds up 40+ years later, even if the my joints don’t, and the MS stole what was innate and second nature. Let’s Go Crazy would take me to places I feared to tread but gave me the adrenaline to fly in ways my body didn’t yet know. Life….and so much better with the rare souls of Prince.

Great interview! You can tell she liked him better with the Revolution than his growth as a musician wanting better musicians. It’s interesting because Peggy interview saw it as he evolved with getting better musicians and Susan saw it as he didn’t know how to value friendship. Kinda cold what she said about Sheila E. Sheila E already had a following she was with Lionel Ritchie and Carlos Santana. Prince had to be Prince and evolve, Wendy and Lisa wanted it more about them in my opinion. And his unfaithful caused issues since he was dating her twin and him not picking the songs they wrote and going in a different direction. Think her point about bringing up his childhood is unfair and not appropriate. Friendship had nothing to do with it, it was about him growing as a creative and the Revolution was not that high caliber of musicians. All this to say, I wish God would have let him finish his memoire.

I would think it was hard or difficult being in a romantic relationship with Prince. He was so creative, always writing or in studios, rehearsals, interviews, appearances, tours and whatnot. How he found quality time (not just sex) for a woman is beyond me. Could be some of the reasons why his marriages didn't last that long. I think he was fascinating, especially so after hearing these stories.

I love that Susan acknowledged the tech crew as her final thank you. This is, hands down, THE best interview I have EVER seen. I have loved Prince ever since I was in high school. I remember roller skating in a roller rink with my besties to Controversy. I have never listened to a cassette more than I have Sign of the Times, and later Diamonds and Pearls. Those were my favorite Prince albums. I am so crazy about Prince that I talk to him and chant/pray for him, every day. THAT is how much he and his music mean to me! I just can’t thank you enough for such a beautiful, fascinating interview. My daughter is a musician about to release her first EP, and I can’t wait to share this video with her! I bought Susan’s incredible book the day it came out (nearly!). I wish I could study at Berklee and have her as a professor. I am from Boston and worked at Boston University. I listened to WBCN daily at work. One day the dj (I forget which one, but they were all amazing) announced that Prince would be giving a special (tiny) show AFTER his Worcester concert, in Boston, to raise money for a scholarship fund in honor of the fan who was struck by a car and killed, whilst waiting in line to buy a ticket to his concert, outside of Tower Records very close to Berklee. I tod my boss that I HAD to get tix for this show, and flew down to the Tickermaster outlet at Tower records, where that poor fan had lost his life. I was SO close to the stage that night at that club on Landsdowne- it may have been X, but my memory is pretty shot (cough cough). 😂 It was surreal. I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to see Prince perform in such an intimate setting, but all night I kept thinking about that poor soul who lost his life, and wasn’t able to see him that night. But I have a feeling they were with Prince right there, front and center, in spirit. 🙏💜🙏☮️ I miss you, dear Prince.

She used her obvious intelligence, knowledge, and passion to put us in the room with one of the most gifted musicians, producers, and songwriters in the history of music. I’m grateful to have shared the same hometown as Prince and the opportunity to know him (although I’m younger than him) … He and my older brother were classmates and cordial friends who played together as children growing up in our “Northside” of Minneapolis Community! Prince was a very talented and passionate artist and creator of songs and who had a strong drive to produce the music he wanted all by himself…the music we all love to this day! Me, being a skilled multi instrument musician and vocalist that creates, produces and records all my songs all myself I can relate to the depths of his passion for his work ethic and his originality! Here’s the dirty secret. My band Apprentice recorded at Sunset in the summer of ‘82. We were there for about 3 weeks. From the first second we arrived we noticed many of the Sunset employees endlessly telling jokes about some guy we had never heard of - Prince. To a person, everyone at that studio (Peggy included) thought Prince was a total joke, who had no idea what the fuck he was doing. Mostly because he was recording everything dry in the age of massive 80’s reverb. They can talk reverently all they want about Prince now, but the truth is at the time, they thought he sucked and made him the punchline of 1000 jokes. A year later he was the biggest artist in the world and they never saw it coming. 100% true story

Thanks for putting Prince's early years in perspective. Many people criticize him for some of his actions but they also forget he was still in his 20's and had so many responsibilities at such a young age. He did much better than most in handling so much so early.

Parade must have been extremely tricky to mix. The textures - the Revolution, Eric Leads jazz horn arrangements, and Claire Fischer’s dense orchestration, all had to be balanced, often within the same song. That’s not easy. Christopher Tracy’s Parade is a perfect example of the dense mixes Dr. Susan Rogers had to mange. That’s may be her most genius mix. It’s why she’s so respected. There’s never been anything quite like that before or after. Many musicians look to Parade, and SOTT too, as Prince’s most influential work. Purple Rain too of course.

Sorry, I had to comment again…. This channel is so entertaining and informative, whether you are a fan of the music, a studio rat, a musician, an up and coming producer/engineer or an established one…if you’ve ever read the credits on any classic album, be it by Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Van Halen, Prince, etc…then you’ve probably seen the “Sunset Sound Recorders” and wondered about this mythical place. In fact it may be the reason why you are here. The detective in you wanted to find out exactly why this place is so prevalent among so many great artists. Once you learn exactly what this place is about, then you become an amateur historian…researching the place, it’s history, and of course all the amazing artists that have recorded here. But for every one of us who is enthralled with this magical place, there are so many others who don’t know or simply don’t care. They are the listeners, the fans, the consumers who buy the albums, CDs, tapes, and downloads. They could care less where their favorite artist recorded a certain song or mixed a particular record. But these listeners are the most important ones because all they care about is the end result. Does it move them? Does it rock and roll? Does it make them want to dance and want to party? And of course, it does. Sunset Sound let’s the artist be the artist, allowing them to be creative, honor their muse, and all the while imparting a little bit of its sonic character onto and into the artist’s track. I was fortunate enough to record guitar overdubs here and to have my record mixed here by Howard Benson in 1990. It was a magical place then, as it’s always been, as it always will be. Susan and Duane were both awesome, what a wealth of knowledge about Prince and his artistry. Susan is an intelligent lovely, sweet lady and her knowledge of Prince and music in general is extensive. This is one of the best interviews I have ever seen anyone give about Prince and his work ethic. Prince has always been my favorite musician and when she said he used twelve-gauge strings on his guitars playing the fret with such strength and dexterity in his left hand. He used Mesa Boogie amps and flanger effects on his guitar pedals. Me loving the guitar and Prince being my favorite guitarist of all time. I respect Susan Rodgers and her journey & opinions on Prince. She deserves so much credit for being a pivotal part of musical history, however i'm exhausted with the idea that Prince's peak was in the 80's. I understand what she means in terms of "album pop sales" but Prince wanted to be so much more than that. If it wasn't for a song called "The Love We Make" off of his Emancipation album, i would have taken my own life as little girl. Prince has a song on his 20ten album called "Compassion" where he sings about the iceberg & how compassion and peace can stop these things. We're in 2022 & now & the general public is JUST becoming aware that it could be an actual issue for our earth. Prince had a deeper purpose than radio, than Kiss or Rasberry beret. He had a deep Spiritual calling. Prince has beautiful instrumental piano melodies that i use for meditations, songs like Arboretum are amazing for meditations. He would have never made those beautiful songs if he stayed linear. I'm 21 years old Prince is very popular in my generation but he's just more popular with us young MUSICIANS. Artists like Young Thugh, Kimbra, Janelle Monae, Beach House, Lil Uzi Vert, Snoh Allegra are all deeply inspired by Prince. Kids are not going to know if those kids parents are mainstream only listeners but i grew up in a family that educated me and my siblings. Most people around my age at least have heard Purple Rain , Kiss or When Doves Cry tho but wasn't aware its Prince. There's a lot of us that know his majesty, the youth are not monolithic, it's just that the monolithic content is just a little louder. None the less this was a fantastic interview and i challenge people to listen to his later works, where he literally predicts where our world is now. Songs like "New World" "The Future" "The War" "Dear Mr.Man" i can go on, Prince is a life story lol.

Great interview! I've listened to just about every Dr. Rogers interview and she's always a delight! At the 49:40 mark, Eric Dolphy had a similar quote about the fleetingness of music: "When you hear music, after it's over, it's gone, in the air. You can never capture it again."

i'm a hack, years in between playing, but sometimes it would be like channeling, couldn't hit a wrong note (as if wrong notes were taken off the table) & the feel of the strings, the holy energy, the way everything conspires to deliver... & then like u say, it will never be just that way again ...

Prince was definitely hyper creative. He would hardly play the same song the same way live. So I think if Prince recorded a song but wasn't creatively done with it he would take those ideas and put it into the live performances

He def was ADHD. I think most hypercreatives are. She described it as a faucet that wouldn't turn off. I'm not a creative but I have been diagnosed with adhd. I describe it like being in a train at night. You see the lights whizzing past the windows as the train moves thru cities & towns. But it never stops at any stops. So you cant get off. I feel that's why a lot of artists turn to opiate abuse. Just to slow their minds down. Michael Jackson once described not being able to sleep bcuz the baseline to Billie Jean was ringing in his head. So he had to get up at write it down

at around an hour in it is said how Prince covered every emotion. It was more for me. He was my voice growing up and could eloquently put into words everyting I was feeling. There were often challenging or complicated things thet present whilst you learn to be yourself. He encouraged that with his music, easily explained complicated emotions and thoughts with just one line. Gave me the confidence to be unapolagetically myself. Now as I visit interviews and performances, I hear him putting beauty to who I am. I realise how fan obsessive that sounds but I was not allowed to listen to a lot of artists growing up but thanks to sign of the times, Prince slipped through the net, my mother taking him to be okay . So he became the one voice I heard and what I voice, heart, beauty, talent and all around magical gift to the world

Drew Dempsey last night I watched a clip of a crowd singing a popular song with the artist holding mic out and then them just totally falling silent....tik tok 30 second clips have made hit songs out of nothing....thank you SO MUCH for bringing back the stories of L E G E N D S....true artist...in time humanity will look back at these in wonder...
