The third act was a stroke of genius. Filmed with "low oxygen" in mind, showing the brevity of the situation, while the fate of mankind was at stake, the intensity was filmed perfectly. Ending with Capa's surreal death experience, showing his final moments, was beautiful.

Everyone's faves when Kappa got back on board-they all had their own little private guilt about Kaneda dying totally hits where it hurts most. Unlike a lot of sci-fi of the ensemble headed to a destination, this one IMO gave some decent time to each character before they started killing them so that anyone died it was very poignant, even fuckin Harvey.

Honestly, I don't remember the horror-twist near the end of the movie really bothering me when I saw it. It was a bit of a left turn, sure, but I felt like it worked overall.

I just expected some sort of celestial metaphysics to be involved. I think it transitioned well, and it didn't feel like some awkward "other part" of the movie that was out of place or anything.

I saw this when I was 16 back in 2008 on DVD. I have always held this movie dear to my heart. This movie had a big impact of my life at the time. It still amazes me that even after 10 years it still hasn’t gained the amount of respect it truly deserves. It’s absolutly Danny Boyle’s best film.

As someone who tends to hold media to near impossible narrative standards, I loved this movie. I loved the subversion of expectation and general weirdness of the third act (because it kept with the consistency of the narrative theme--human nature and the sun as a deity). I didn't care about the fact that the science doesn't add up, *because this is a **_science fantasy_** film about human nature, not a doc*. The premise of the film is nothing more than a framing device. (Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG, pick a friggin sci-fi flic, all have FTL travel and ignore relativity, which is scientifically impossible. No one complains. Come at me.) People seem not to like the dialogue. I guess its not melodramatic enough for them. To me, it just felt real and true to the characters. Dude, you are the first critic I've seen that consistently shares my opinions and outlook on films. New sub here, but I'm going to be going through your back catalog to find more previously unseen films to watch. Amazing work.

Most sci fi films, like trek, don't ignore relativity with FTL since, as in the case of Trek, the ships don't move through space, space moves around the ship which physicists have stated that it would not effect relativity considering that the ships are encased in in a bubble of spacetime that we are in now.

As someone who really does care about a certain level of scientific accuracy, the only thing that was truly 'inaccurate' was how they got cold from being in a vacuum. The actual procedure is not to try to conserve heat, because there is nowhere for it to go (and therefore you don't freeze), all you need to do is exhale so that the air doesn't get ripped out of your lungs, which is the only real danger aside from suffocating. There are definitely technologies that are currently completely impossible that are invented in the context of the movie, such as in star trek, but I think the only issue is when you are inaccurate about something we know about, which is the vacuum of space. It's kind of like Interstellar - by my standard, Interstellar is almost perfect aside from a few things with orbital mechanics, because it invents new science but never does anything strictly impossible. I think it's the exact same here, except for the vacuum.

I dont mind the "horror twist." I don't mind the science being right or wrong. And the ending wrapped up the movie well thematically. However the execution of the ending was absolutely terrible. The editing becomes beyond jarring - maybe that's the point, but they took it way too far. It was painful. The plot threads become so messy and unresolved that by the final shot the viewer has absolutely no idea what just happened. Almost no information is properly conveyed. It probably looked good on paper, but in practice there was way too much going on in the last twenty minutes to be cohesive at all.

I love this movie too, but I pulled totally different themes out of it - not saying your ideas are wrong, just that there's more than one way to see the film. To me, it's all about "looking at the sun," both figuratively and literally. Think how many times we see closeups of eyes, and then think of the shape of the heat shield and the way the sun at the very beginning is bordered by what looks like sclera - making it look like an eye too. And it's also about extremes of temperature, emotions, and sanity. We all know you can't look directly at the sun because it'll blind you - but in this movie the blindness is both literal and figurative. Searle seems to be traveling down the path toward blindness (even wearing sunglasses when he doesn't need them, like a blind man), but he only goes far enough to prefer his own death to the death of any of his teammates. If he hadn't died, he might have ended up like Pinbacker, who became blind to the value of all human life (except his own, apparently). Now this is where people who don't like or get the movie start complaining *hard.* Everything gets blurry and hard to see around Pinbacker because he's become to attached to the sun and the madness it represents. But the sun has another side, representing life (as Mikey noted in the video). To live healthily, you have to find the right distance between the warmth and brilliance of the sun and the coldness of outer space. Capa does, and I think Corazon does. Cassie is locked away in the darkness of depression, but she's not as far gone as Mace, who is utterly cold about sacrificing all their lives for the mission - even his own (He still has enough heat to fight with Capa, though). Capa's balance is what enables to witness the birth of a new star (in what must be a fantasy sequence). At the end, Cassie is first *frozen* by hopelessness but then able to break free and help Capa; and when she does so, a light shines on all three of them. Corazon finds life in death and death in life in the garden, where she finds one live plant among the ruins and then is killed by Pinbacker. And Mace sacrifices himself in both literal and figurative cold to save the mission. Then there's Kaneda, who burns to death and Harvey who freezes to death - we don't see as much of their personalities, but Harvey has some cold insanity when he demands Capa give him the spacesuit. I guess Trey was trying to hold the balance, but he slipped over the edge when his rationality failed him, causing him to make a disastrous mistake.

I like your analysis and I agree that Searle was on his way to become like Pinbacker. He even ignored Capa's pleas to get Kaneda to safety just so he can have Kaneda face "Helios" and tell him what it's like. He then looked dejected and unremorseful when Kaneda died before he could answer to "What do you see?". Kaneda was not as far down the road as Searle was, but had Kaneda saved himself, we could very well had 2 more Pinbackers on the ship....but since one was enough, I guess DannyBoy had to kill them off, but not after showing us that psychological bridge for the upcoming Pinbacker character later in the movie.

I don't think it's a linear A to B type of thing; furthermore, I think the contrast between Searle and Pinbacker is enormous. Ultimately both Searle and Kaneda literally sacrificed themselves without hesitation, while Pinbacker literally sacrificed everyone else for his belief.

Great video Mikey. I'd love to know why people think it goes crazy at the end? It seems fairly logical. They find the reason the first mission failed, they try to overcome that, they make it, and Capa gets to see his nuclear reaction in slow motion as space and time distort, and as he stated to Cassie, it was beautiful. Pinbacker is just a guy, his appearance is explained by seeing Searle's skin start to burn and scar and the time he has been there. He's not particularly crazy, there's spiritual reason for his sabotage. He's the antithesis of Mace and Capa who basically team up to overcome him. Science wins despite spirituality trying it's best to mess things up.

Hi, Dave! I think many of the ones who don't like the final act are those who envisioned that Sunshine would go down in another way. I've noticed that, for them, the ambition achieved in the first few parts of the film suddenly went stale--they were primed for a clear progression on tense, philosophical, & claustrophobic sci-fi but were instead served a "detour". It's a matter of one's expectations of how the film should go. I don't mind the "detour" because I believe it's what sets Danny Boyle apart from other masterful directors who just wouldn't go beyond their comfort zone (yes, Nolan). Danny Boyle challenged filmmaking & his craft--he's a bold director, like a more mainstream version of David Lynch. I find it sad, though, how others discredit the beauty of the film because they didn't like a part of it. Sunshine is one of those films that are beautiful on the whole--flaws & all. I've read quite a lot of reviews, & these generally fall on the extremes. I guess one could say that those who don't like it love the first few parts so much that the last act feels like a betrayal, an abandonment, an expectation that died hard. Like Sunshine is THAT beautiful to hate.

You know, I saw this movie. It was a hard watch for pretty much every reason you listed, and it stuck hard to me for a bit. I couldn't even say I liked it because it was such a bleak movie. But watching you break it down, it's the weirdest thing - it wrecked me. You're explaining what I saw and what I felt when watching it, but it's like I didn't want it to have hit me that hard, and now I'm having this weird retro-reaction to this vid, experiencing all the sadness and loss I've avoided for at least half a year since actually watching the movie. This has renewed my appreciation for this movie. The section starting at 4:50 was truly breath-taking and gave me all the chills. The cinematography and music of this movie are some of the best in modern sci-fi--or any genre for that matter. Plus, the use of a "non-traditional" cast was perfect and added so much more realism to the film and made the premise easier to accept as an audience member versus having me accept Mark Whalberg as an astrophysicist. The ending of the episode was pure bliss. Well done. Best one yet, Mikey!

I am crazy late to the party, as I literally just watched the movie today, 11 years post release. I was blown away by its beautiful cinematography and symbolism. But I love your interpretations on movies, and saved watching this video until I had seen the movie myself. You are spot on. I think the one thing, that left us with a lot of foreshadowing and symbolism was when Pinbacker said (paraphrasing) "In the end there will be only one man left, and god. Will I be that man?", he was right in a way, but it wasn't him, it was Capa all along, predestined to face god alone. Incredible movie, and incredible review. Thank you.

The movie is told from characters perspective. That's why it was filmed like that. Low oxygen, anxiety, the fear of unknown. It was brilliant. If they'd done the third act with traditional filmmaking it wouldn't be so effective.

@@jamesfleming9837 When you have to sit down and explain to the audience after the fact that it's an allegory to Greek mythology or whatever, that's not "brilliant" - it's pretentious as fuck to expect that to strike a chord with the majority of people who enjoyed the first two acts which ask much less of the viewer. And no, just because YOU got it doesn't make it brilliant either. Again, it's not that the act as a whole doesn't work as a concept. It's that it feels out of place relative to the rest of the film. You can't just stick an idea wherever you want and say "yeah but it's art tho" to justify it. The first 2/3 of the movie was intriguing science fiction, and a bit unique, but a far stretch from avant-garde. The rest of the movie was weirdly avant-garde. It's so incredibly out of place. It'd be like if after Peter Jackson did The Two Towers, a completely different director came in and made Return of the King in a very different style. Maybe there was thought put into it, maybe there was a reason he did it the way he did, but no matter how much you would insist that his style was "appropriate" for the goal he had in mind, it would still botch the integrity and coherence of the whole trilogy, and you'd alienate a lot of viewers who enjoyed the first two movies who were expecting the same sort of thing from the last one. If something in three parts is to be experienced as a whole, then it should be a goal for all of those parts to appeal to an audience on the same level. I'm not saying it's impossible to have a shift in tone and still appeal to the same audience - but this movie clearly didn't achieve that on a notable level.

@Turnt SNACO This brings into question whether a movie has to be brilliant for all onlookers to be brilliant; it's a logical fallacy of some kind, since it doesn't have an end point. No movie will be brilliant to all viewers. So, is a movie that is brilliant to 1 out of 100 really more meaningful than one that is brilliant to 1 out of 1000? What about a movie with a 1:10 ratio versus a movie with a 1:10000? How relevant at all in an artistic sense is the "quantifiable" ratio of sufficiently moved viewers? Is it not brilliance to deeply move even one person? Anywho: There is not much if anything that needs to be explained separately about Sunshine. Like, none at all. The internal logic is sound, the general/wider allegories clear, the presentation efficient. Whether or not the realization of Act III should have been done differently is up for debate, I suppose, as evidenced by the common opinion held by viewers. The director has noted that both the contents and presentation of Act III are purposely intended to contest Reality and break-up Normalcy. To me, nothing of neither the plot nor trippy presentation (which WAS carefully and gradually built-up until that point) was ambiguous, illogical or unpalatable. I'd go so far as to say that I don't get how someone could possibly not get them. As such, I don't get how it was "jarring".

I watched this movie after watching your review and then I watched your review a second time. I have to say this was a wild anxiety inducing ride. But I fucking loved it. The score is so hopefully hopeless. That makes less than no sense but that’s the best way I can describe that brilliant ass crescendo of gorgeous sound vibrations. I was so stressed watching this I think I lost 2 lbs. But hooooly shit I have zero regrets. God this movie was fantastic. The shot of Corazon breaking-down in the sealed passageway with the flames of hell engulfing her dear garden all around her, is a cinematic marvel. The 3 side framing, the juxtaposition for scale, the flame dynamics of the background. It gives me chills everytime i pause and stare at that the perfection of that image. I still remember when I saw this movie on the cinema... My mother and sister came to visit, I was in college. So we felt like watching any kind of movie. Since this one was on its first day we decided to go and see it without having any idea what it was about. It was just the three of us on the cinema and remember on the way back home we couldn't speak cause we were so overwhelmed by the movie....I love it

I remember watching this film a long time ago, and not liking it, specially the third act, when the guy from the Icarus 1 shows up. But assuming I saw it when it came out, I was 13 or 14 years old, so I might have missed a lot. This video made me want to watch it again, Mikey shows his love for this movie.

Ive probably watched this movie 10x. Its stunning and terrifying. I always seem to cry when it comes to the scene where Cassie is alone on the ship in the dark. Most of the crew is already dead. Her dread of what and who is on the ship bleeds from the screen. The acting is superb. I dont care that its not as popular as other sci-horror movies, its a gem . . my gem.

Great review. I think that I was most impressed with Chris Evans' acting chops. I ha only ever seen him as a superhero before this. Between this, Snowpiercer and Scott Pilgrim, I'm really impressed.

This, along with The Fountain, The Prestiege, Fifth Element, and the US version of Solaris used to be my main movies I went to sleep to because they all soothed my soul so much. Hell I named my twin male cats Albert and Fredrick Borden, I love it that much. I see you've done most of the others-have you hit Solaris yet? The futurism is minimalist and at its heart its about science, love and existence. George Clooney is fabulous as he turns himself down to a good 4 (which shouldn't be possible cuzclooney) and gives the film a heart that is afraid of what he'll find but plows ahead anyway. It's kind of the younger sister of Sunshine and The Fountain, with a space mystery that needs to be solved but has so many quiet, soothing moments of contemplation on life, death, and love that it's music makes you feel weightless. It also at least tried to hit some scientific notes-I was really excited to know that the Higgs-Bosun is a real thing. The context may not have been perfect but just showing an awareness of the work that's going on at the LHC makes me feel that dumbing down may increase your good reviews but there are still movies out there for the thinkin peoples.
