This movie is an *AUDIO-VISUAL ORGY* with many deeper layers; it's about hope, humanity, emotion vs logic, science vs faith...it has its flaws but still a masterpiece! Way to go, Danny Boyle! 👌👌👌

This is actually a pretty underrated movie. I've always liked it. I remember that one Futurama episode when it was a sitcom about people living on the sun and Fry and Leela was watching and you heard from the TV. Somebody said, "help I'm burning to death". And Leela was like do you know how much an apartment on a sun like that would cost.🌞🌞🌞☀️☀️☀️
@WildFungus10 ай бұрын
you know what it needed to be sillier and less 'grounded' if it was just going to be a silly metaphorical movie about the ideation of restarting the sun and what that thematically entails It startds out 20001 and then goes to sure-looks-cool style-over-substance music video crap

I liked the insane crewman plot. He went into existential madness. I don't think it's lovecraftian, but I think it's close. The sun is this inconceivably enormous thing out in space that gives us endless life, power and harm all at once. It's practically God. And that's the point. If god is letting the planet die, who are we to argue? The captain lost his mind staring into the black abyss of space and into the eye of god.

I had to pause the video right at the point when you were holding your breath, as my lovely dog, Trilby, was going totally berserk, having spotted his squirrel nemeses 🐿 in the garden engaged in some sort of territorial turf war over the rights to their nuts!🌰🌰 After several circuits of the house, he eventually calmed down, & I rushed back to press play again, absolutely terrified I’d left you to suffocate to death!😬 My sincere apologies!!! Glad to see you survived! BTW: Re the whole shared "holding your breath"/sympathetic panic-response "thing," may I present for your consideration, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation - the underwater computer vault scene! This damn-near induced me to self-collapsed/imploded lungs watching it, & _THEN_ I found out only later that Tom Cruise reportedly actually *DID* hold his breath for 6+ minutes, so it was all shot in one long take! _WTF??!!!_ I’m starting to hyperventilate just _thinking_ about it now! He had expert training, but _STILL..._ Plus this isn’t the first time Cruise has insisted on holding his breath throughout a scene. He told Steven Spielberg he wanted to control his breathing while submerged in a bathtub in Minority Report, to get the bubble effect without the use of CGI trickery. [I’m starting to wonder if, just _maybe,_ there _[might!]_ be _SOMETHING_ about this *"SCIENTOLOGY stuff* that’s - I don’t know - not, quite, right 🤔?...😳!!!]

@TruckeeDoggo4 жыл бұрын
An early illustration of “get woke, go broke.” The entire third act with Pinbacker is widely viewed as ruining what would have otherwise been a masterpiece of filmmaking, and caused the film to lose commercially at the box office, and with critics. The third act was a statement against the religious fundamentalism of Captain Pinbacker (represented by a disfigured villain charred by overexposure to the light (yes, of God)), which is set against Capa (a pristine and selfless character who represents atheism and science). If Boyle wasn’t trying to shoehorn an awkward political statement that “religious fundamentalism is bad,” and will lead to the downfall of mankind, he would have ended up with a much better end product without such a ruinous third act.
@druidriley31634 жыл бұрын
That's what this movie's subplot was about. Kinda hard to tell the filmmaker that one of the reasons he made the film in the first place isn't necessary.
@TruckeeDoggo4 жыл бұрын
Druid Riley The director could certainly have made a great movie with the science vs. faith themes. But the Pinbacker story felt shoehorned and tacked on, almost like Boyle realized the first two acts were too subtle and nuanced on delivering these themes, so he decided in the third act to bring out the mallet-the insane, villainous, cartoonish, Freddy Krueger religious zealot-with which to beat the audience over the head with an anti religious message.

but based on a beautiful moving short story. Don't remember the name, or the author to be honest, but the husband's words to his wife when he leaves "I'll return to you on the rays of the Sun." are more prophetic than he knows & truly heart-wrenching when she remembers them after word gets back that his ship sacrificed itself to complete the mission as the sun rises.

I hold my breath along with characters in movies. I have done it since I was a kid. I started smoking cigarettes early and you'd think I would have worse lung capacity for my life style. But I can hold my breath an impressively long time. What drives me insane is when peopple in movies are in the ocean with not protective gear and they open their eyes. Then I'm like, angry exhale. Sitting back with my arms crossed. Thinking to myself, mmmhmm salt water in your eyes and you are gone. I see. I do want to see this film. I saw it once, at a party and my friend insisted , 'We are leaving!' And I frot to awkward to just openly steal the DVD as I was having a whisper fight with my friend about why I was leaving too. I didn't sass anyone and stayed in the living room...but I left with her...should have just stole the DVD. It's not like I ever saw any of those people again.

I’ve watched it three times, looks gorgeous and sounds even better. I felt like I was in isolated with the crew which was the best part but man it plods along, I never felt any real urgency or tension. It feels oddly flat the way Event Horizon did and oh brother the third act. What a disappointment that after all that philosophical dialogue the film devolves into a “ the captain went koo-koo “ slasher in space. To me it’s lovely and ambitious but a misstep.
