It's always great to see other filmmakers out there who still support Super 8. The angry, narrow-minded responses this sort of thing usually generates ("Might as well wear a loincloth and chisel on a stone tablet while you're at it!") baffle me to no end. It's a unique format that has the potential to create incredibly evocative images that wouldn't be possible through any level of digital fakery. If only people could put down their RED Epics for five seconds and learn how to use a tool outside their ultra-modern comfort zone.

I hear you! I don't hate digital, it is useful in some instances but, at the end of the day, film is just better. I just saw Dunkirk in 70mm which was a real treat. Digital is alright but the real magic is in film.

Kodak did recently begin producing a colour reversal film stock as well, so if anybody watching this would like to film in colour and run it on a projector, that option is once again available. Super 8 is such an awesome, classic medium and I am happy to see Kodak is keeping it around. I only discovered it a few years back when the film 'Super 8' was released and whatever you think about the film, it does show how much "production value" these cameras can bring to a vintage period piece. The film, while not widely acclaimed, is the only film of 2011 I can distinctly remember seeing among the MANY others I went to see that year (working at a movie theatre, I saw everything). And the movie does provide many excellent examples as to how super 8 film can add value to compositions set in the pre-digital and VHS era.

Hey Joey, there is one color reversal stock left in production it's the Belgian wittnerchrome the 200D. It's the only stock that gives you a look similar to the 60's kodachrome.

I just shot 2 rolls in Mexico last week, and the 1st was wittnerchrome 200D the 2nd one was the Agfa 200d, If was ok but the wittnerchrome was better over all, I did the transfer myself to 4k hd for editing (24p), You can see clips on my other channel, Video is called "Mexico 2017 Music Video #1 Hbvideos Osborne Neighborhood Church" (this is not ad for my video just wanted you guys to see the super 8 stuff) I glad I had film, (the 1st shot filmed 2 times) 1 on digital and 1 time on Super 8. Well guess what the digital file failed so I used the Super 8 worked out fine, Real film never fails, Digital sometimes does. I don't like using chips to film video, Tapes were much more relay able.

Hello. I love the video. If I may I would like to ask your help. I love the super 8 look and recently I've been using After Effects to take my Sony mirorless videos and use super 8 overlays to "fake" that look. There are numerous of these for sale but I want to learn how to do this myself. Are you familiar with this process? I'm assuming I have to get a camera and run a reel of blank film and take video of the screen. I apologize if I'm not being clear. Thanks.

By that point I’ll just see if I can get a reflex model Bolex H16 instead. ☹️ At least the good news is since this video was produced regular 8MM has returned, and you can get some pretty decent cameras for that format for peanuts. @cubdukat
@cubdukat 8 жыл бұрын
Probably not long. Wittner Kinotechnik allegedly killed Wittnerchrome 200D about a year ago, so Spectra and Pro8mm are working on current stock. And I wouldn't expect Ferrania's reversal stock (or for that matter, any of their stocks) any time in the next five years... Unfortunately, the only other option is to bite the bullet and deal with the scalpers on eBay who want to sell E100D at obscene prices.

I just bought a Sankyo EM 60XL at a flea market for $5. It has a bad view finder so I can't see the exposure meter. Is the camera's auto exposure sensor located in the view finder assembly? If so, I will assume I will not have AE as well. Do you know how the manual exposure dial works? There is no marking on the dial to tell the exposure settings. On the plus side, I don't think the bad viewfinder is due to user breakage, but most likely manufactory defect. Therefore, this camera was not used, and with nearly new working parts.

When people recorded with one of these camera's back in the 1970s and watched their footage back on some sort of large screen, would they always see the sprocket on the screen. 2. How would they view back their footage, was it through a TV or something else. 3. Today we store our video on hard drives and the cloud, how did people store their super 8 video back in the 1970s.

@larsbliss2728
@larsbliss2728 5 жыл бұрын
@@ShanksFX1 Not quite right as B&H can be pretty pricey. I remember when Fuji discontinued peel apart film for Polaroid cameras. Their prices for it went up about 400% the day it was announced, I haven't bought from them since cause I don't support businesses that gouge the hell out of you. The cheapest prices you'll find for Kodak film are from Kodak themselves. Either call to order or use their website. They ship very quickly too. I buy 400" rolls of Kodak XX 35mm to roll my own 35mm cassettes and just started ordering Super 8 Ektachrome that I will process myself. I am angry with Kodak for discontinuing Plus-X, Tech Pan, and Ektachrome but at least they brought back Ektachrome. If they would sell it for standard 8mm I would be very happy with them again. I think my favorite is still standard 8mm with my old Minolta Zoom 8. Smartphones have CMOS sensors. The vast majority of these sensors use rolling shutter. Once you start moving the camera, or the subject moves across the frame, you will notice skewing and jello, which film cameras do not exhibit. You know what other cameras do not have such distortion? CCD-based ones.

@ShanksFX1 6 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard of this as well, there is always a chance it can overload. Especially when your dealing with a battery powered piece of equipment that’s 30 years old. You could drain the battery a little before putting in, that might help prevent an overload.

Most of the cameras in the introduction are NOT SUPER 8 but rather 8mm (they had no sound). The Kodak Brownie Movie Camera f/2.3 is an 8mm camera. It did not have a cartridge, but you had to put the film on the "take up" spool by hand. Great fun. No batteries, you had to hand wind it up. If you really want to go "retro" get a Kodak Brownie Movie Camera. The Film Photography Project is a great resource for help and how to get film.

Kodak failed at putting out their redesign of the Super 8mm camera. But no worries, I'm so pleased that www.Pro8mm.com is killing it for us. At about 88 bucks for 3 scanned minutes, some seven or so stocks now are available. Buy a roll, get shipping, processing and scanning, and links to your scan. Also they have refurbished cameras for purchase, because many of the old cameras are pretty in need. I'm so happy about this because all the younger generations can now learn and use this wonderful format. It came SO close to full extinction in the late 90's. Whew! It's a bit cost prohibitive for feature length, but short films are perfect for my budgets.

Spectra Film and Video in North Hollywood, C.A. That is where I got mine done last week. They have a web site and do Super 8 reversal about once a week. Very nice guys too, Been using them for about the last 10 years or so.

Either from Kodak directly (they sell it on their website shop) or depending where you live, there's third party services. We in Germany for example have ANDEC & Wittner Kinotechnik. And I think they also do international shipping. There's also some in UK as well.

Does anyone have a camera Nizo s8e? Is it normal that the image seen from viewfinder is so dark? Thanks.

Yeah, these Nizos all need servicing after all these years.... I too have one. Even a soundfilm model that runs much quieter than the regular silentfilm cams.. It stopped several times in between shots while I was shooting a Super 8 cartridge in 2012. Was even regular Ektachrome 100D color reversal stock. Really drove me mad because it messed up some shots.

Hey Joey, I’m shooting with 50D film (based outdoors primarily), I want to only use the exposure on the manual setting however I’m unsure on how bright/dark it will be. Can you shed any tips at all on that for me?

The problem is that pretty much 90% of Super8 Cameras aren't capable of handling the different ISO/ASA ranges of the modern filmstock that Kodak and some third party suppliers, like Wittner, supply. Only the higher end models allow you to either manually set the ISO/ASA settings to the desired film-speed or they automatically recognize it from the super8 cassette notch. And technically you COULD project negative stock and film it with your camera. All you need to do is inverting the image in post. But it's crap and the films should rather be really getting a real telecine scan for optimum results.

People just do sh*t like this to try to be "cool" and "retro." That's all it is. If you don't like digital then stop using your cell phone and KZbin and your computer. Go "retro" bro.
