Super 8 turns 10 today! I remember seeing it with my sister J.J. Abrams did a really good job with Steven Spielberg making a love letter to film, childhood and 1980s adventures Lots of nods to E.T. and Close Encounters of the Third Kind but mostly Cloverfield The anxieties of growing up, the heartache of young love, the sorrow of broken families, and the wonder of what’s lurking out there in the night sky are core tenets straight out of the Spielberg playbook Also paved the way for the pop culture trend from Stranger Things to IT These characters are given true development The plot is a bit shaky and some of the melodrama could've been cut down But the train crash is the best set piece in the whole film With the giant monster I like how a lot of it is kept a mystery and you actually sympathize with it as a result of being mistreated by humanity Elle Fanning can act It's cool too that this event brings a father and son closer together still rising from a tragedy An example of good ol fashioned summer popcorn entertainment Abrams made it as a response to iconic movies making his own mythos

It’s been almost 10 years ago after this movie had came out. Can’t believe it’s almost been that long.

@E08-EduardoBarajas, I’d thought the same exact thing because J.J. Abrams really started this 80s nostalgia trend in the 2010s. Interestingly enough the book of RPO was released a little over two months after this movie came out. Also don’t forget The Goldbergs.

you're right, the build up did NOT pay off AT ALL!!!! so many subplots that were not tied in together. The military threats came to nothing, the space cubes were supposed to build the ship, but the allien could not escape. And the end was so lame, the boy just has a heart to heart with the allien and all is resolved??? what was the deal with the kidnappings?? and the parents just made up in a few seconds??? no epilogue, sudden end, illogical. loved the kids and adults.

So far this has been a bit of a disappointing summer movie season. Not one film has lived up to its promise. Well, let's see how the last few films to be released will go...
