I still keep coming back to this video so many years later. You have done so much for the viability of the scratch built foamie aspect of the flying rc hobby. Rc test flight is what it is because of the work you've done. Amazing.

Same here... I used to watch this video when I was younger and I was in awe... Wonder what happened to Dave... His designs were top notch for scratch builds
@baliblades7 ай бұрын
@@jonathanrigley981 He has another channel that covers various topics in podcast type form. Nothing R/C though 😕

you know what, when I was 11 years old, I watch your videos. Now, I'm an engineer and I now understand what you're talking about. You kinda helped me back then choosing my career.

We miss you, bro! I started scratch-building years ago because of you. It's too bad you don't still enjoy the hobby with us. Such a shame. Maybe one day you will come back with Alien technology.

Great job! You are bringing back into a hobby I gave up years ago.

Thanks for all the comments and ideas guys, I read them all! Hey I was thinking for guys with just a scratch built or store bought parkjet - you could put just ONE gyro on the pitch and this would allow you to move your CG farther back. Farther back CG is going to make better use of your flaps, way tighter loops, and more maneuverable all the way around and at the same time keep the plane under control for you especially with landing! - Dave Powers

Wonder why this guy never try to make a kit to copy this particular model! in all & all, this is perhaps one of the mos iconic and best known videos that actually portrait his knowledge and engineering skills!

Coming from an aerospace engineer currently working on Bombarbier C series, good work. Maybe just the dorsal fins being a little too long when they could take less weight and space with pointy ends and still achieve the same effect. Could you tell me the total power your motors can achieve please? You definitely achieved an impressive weight / power ratio. Remember tho, plane landings are ridiculously simple, try to almost equalize the weight falling with your portability and leave the thrust forward be transfered in heat and friction from the plane to your landing gear. I see you slow your RC when all you need is to make him lift 99% of his weight right before he touches the ground, all the forward speed will be lost in friction and heat.
@kenchen7043 жыл бұрын
reilordi bob a typical 3S PU spinning a 6x4 prop produces about 1.3 kg of thrust, he has two so that makes it 2.6 kg

You engineering critcs are missing the point. The control software and associated data can be applied to any aircraft and is likely to be worth far more than the ultimate foam mockup it's now flying on.
@hopper14199 жыл бұрын
The software he wrote and the general data on what he is doing has pretty well been covered many times over years ago. The f111, YF22, FA35 and B2 all use similar types of ideas and software he has done. But he did a great job. I know how he feels building something from your ideas that works. It even used to make me a living. He has great things ahead of him.
@RoyceLerwick9 жыл бұрын
But not by him. He's doing it himself. Some people like to do things from scratch, that's how decades of failed convention get exposed, and "set science" is debunked.

f'n amazing.. u brought a pos foam board to a completely asthetic amusing plane that can do what hardly anything else can do. ive seen a lot of rc planes, and none have attracted me like this. especially seeing you start from scratch, and build it into a masterpiece.
@pilotavery11 жыл бұрын
That's one of the best scratch builds I have ever seen. I saw a jet like that once, but it also had ducted fan powered twin engines, with 2 rotating ducted fan exhausts. The whole rear thrust would turn! You should try that!
@jimwilliams153610 жыл бұрын
And no military black budget in sight.. Makes you wonder what they spend it on when a guy with a hobby can reproduce tricky avionics. Also most times they design the aircraft around the powerplant just the same way. Awesome.
@maximejeanneret58869 жыл бұрын
nice video and congrats and stuff.... BUT this isn't a jet. I clicked on the video because it said RC JET. Which it isn't. Which sucks. That's all.

IF YOU LEARN to FLY you would not need gyros i learned to fly helicopter with no gyro on futaba 4 Channel radio no mixes no exponential no rates no end point adjustments no centering.... no nothing just 4 channels with trim today no one knows how to set up an airplane or heli properly they just do everything in the radio and few can really fly the computers do it for them
