Super Astute is done and other updates

I got the Tamiya Super Astute wrapped up as well as the Comical Grasshopper. For some reason I thought I had done the video on the Comical GH but I had not yet. I will get that out soon. A big thanks to ‪@nomusicrc‬ for the great gift of the Grasshopper. I just sent out kits to two other channels Tuesday so be on the lookout for them over at ‪@IowaBudgetRCBashers‬ and ‪@BargainBashersRc‬ in a little bit!

Thanks John, both turned out looking really great. Definitely on the opposite ends of the RC spectrum though, one is a lean mean racing machine and the other is a squished up wheelie machine! Sounding more like Addam now mate,glad you're on the mend! If its what i had a few months back your lungs will take a good three weeks or so to improve. That comical hopper has fun written all over it.....and i dont blame you for not wanting to take either out in the snow! Great job on the super Astute build,looks delightful! 👌 Im generally a box art guy,but have other plans for the super Astute.... Gloss black gold fleck paint,dynatech 02 motor,vintage high cap dampers,Egress wheels and tyres with adaptor for front fittings,and I've managed to source some very rare original Astute decals to finish it all off!!! Project 'stealth Astute' is slowly coming together in my head! 😉 As for the juniors.....i do believe that Avante black special is an original from around 1990,if so its actually quite a rare collectable kit now! I bought it about 35 years ago,long long long before the 1/10 rc version was released . I still have it,its a mighty fine model. Lovely detail on it,pink wheels,slick tyres.....stunning!! That one deserves a video for sure buddy!😊👍 👍

Yes, feeling much more human now, the cough is still here but it too is getting better. Seems like that is going to be around for a while. The Grasshopper should be a real fun one to rip around the yard with and ride some wheelies. I love the ones that make you smile just by looking at them. Those squished up cartoon bodies are great! The Super Astute turned out great and I think it is going to be a track beast! I thought about doing it in silver or light gun metal but opted for the white just because I knew the paint would cooperate with me! The plans for yours sounds super cool and I am sure it will be a stunner! Th little JR kits are fun to have around for quick little in-between projects to do. Plus they look cool displayed with the big ones! I am sure they will be in their own video at some point. Take care James and have a great weekend coming up!

Thank Jeremy, it turned out looking really nice and it feels like it is going to tear up the track once I can get it out there! I have been so blessed over the years from many folks I felt it was time to start thinning the herd here and rehoming some. I have some more to move on eventually. You are not wrong, shipping is getting rough. Seems like unless you are a huge company getting breaks on rates it is getting ridiculous. It sis look good sitting out in the snow, don't think it would drive well out there but for the photos it worked great. I do think it will do very well on the track once I can get it out there on it. It just has that really good feel to it on the bench!

LOL, you are not wrong, many of the Tamiya kits have odd or corny names! I love these comical kits, the squished up kind of cartoonish looks of them just make me happy! The Astute is a great looking buggy and I think it is going to tear up the track, once I get my track back to buggy running conditions. Currently still under snow and ice, mostly ice after the thaw/ freeze days and nights we have had. I need some studded tires! LOL!

The Super Astute looks really nice, Tamiya picks some really nice stickers to go on the buggies. The comical Grasshopper should be a awesome one to run. Astute Looks great. Nice no bounce in suspension 👍 Great pics in the snow too. The answer to your end of video question: The 6x6 should be next. Snow and ice on the track won’t bother that one.

I was worried the white on the snow would be too much but it looks great out there! I was very tempted to run it but the receiver is not waterproof (I don't think) and it is not really a snow basher, still crossed my mind though!

At a glance, the Tamiya Astute appears to be eligible for a set of blue wheel nuts. Great work, Addam. A couple of really great kits you have there!

Yes, it probably could use some bling. Blue or maybe pink wheels nuts would add a splash of color to the otherwise kind of blah wheels!

Ya look terrific Addam look's as though you visited your barber!!!!! I got my Astute yesterday as well as the sealed ball bearing kit and the aluminum gear chingy thing w/ a low profile servo and 12T 550 Injora brushed motor I think she'll smoke down the track!!! I am feeling a lot better, the annoying cough is still here but it is getting a bit better every day as well. It is nice to feel mostly human again, close to 2 weeks feeling rough was not a good start to the year! I am hoping I filled my quota for sick time this year! Yes, I took a little off of the face mullet, it was getting all bushy! the dry winter weather makes it a bit frizzy! I agree, it takes a few years off when I trim it. I do think the next build will be a 6x6, it just makes more sense with the weather to do one of them.

Nice builds mate!! I had a similar issue with the paint as I live in the humid tropics and paining would give me Tourette’s until I found a food dehydrator on marketplace and now it’s resolved. I can fit a 1/10 body, wing and chassis protector in the same batch. Keep up the great work

I can imagine, I had had more issues with humidity than the cold for sure. I really hate spraying the TS paints in the summer as you never know how they are going to react to the humidity. Cool fix with the dehydrator to fight the humidity!

@AddamsPlayground 2wd are tricky on a dirt track. I always ran the slipper on the loose side when I raced at the dirt track. Usually about 12 inch of slip before the slipper locks up. A lot less spin outs

@@JoevsRc I have the Radiolink gyro in it as a helping hand if it is needed. I think as long as I can get the front to grip it will tear it up out there. I admittedly am terrible with slipper clutches, I always over tighten them . Slipping just sounds like a bad thing and my brain constantly says it wrong even though I know that is its intended job. LOL!

About three weeks ago I raced at my local carpet track with jumps in the Wheelie Class which include my Comical Grasshopper and some other comical cars and Lunchboxes. It was fun until my motor esc gave up. I would like to see the King Yellow.

It is a great looking buggy and it feels really nice, I think it is going to do really well on the track. I enjoy building the little minis from time to time and when I saw they had the GH kit I had t have it and then found the Avante black edition so why not! They are cool to display with the bigger ones!

Yup, it was getting dried out and frizzy so I hacked it back some. Winter pruning! LOL! The Astute looks great and yes, pure 90s decals! I think it is going to do great on the track, once I have one back! It is currently sitting under the snow and ice still. I look forward to driving them, it should be fun with all of them sitting there waiting their turn! You know I have been gifted a lot over the years so I am moving some stuff on that needs a new home. I was going to do channel memberships and give them away through that but I figured it best to make life simpler and just send them out to some other channels. I have not forgotten about the Dirt Master body my friend, I will get it done before spring!

Glad to hear your feeling better. I have the 956 and super astute to build since it's 2 body's maybe I should look at picking up some of that Traxxas paint since the can is bigger.

I am feeling better, still dealing with this annoying cough but feeling a lot better! I do like the traxxas paints, limited in colors compared to the Tamiya colors but I buy the big cans of white, black and silver as they are used all the time and simple colors. I have not had any adverse affects with mixing the Tamiya and the traxxas ones together on any of the kits I have done with them. It dries at least 3 times faster than the Tamiya paint too which speeds things up a lot!

It is a sharp looking buggy and it feels great too, I think it is going to be a ripper on the track. The track is currently under a slab of solid ice at this point LOL!! I need some studded tires!

Yeah, the paint works very well. A lot more limited in colors but I mainly use the white, black and silver as it is cheaper overall and it dries 3 times faster than the Tamiya stuff does. I have yet to have it adversely react with the Tamiya paint either so that is very nice they play well together! I am leaning towards building that one next, I think it rumbling around in the yard will be great fun!

Definitely sounds like you’re doing better. When I saw that Super released, i was going to get it and try to replicate my original, but eventually just put the money towards a new body, under tray , arms, wheels, and tires, which most came from the UK. Unfortunately, my original decal sheet is missing a couple of decals because I used them on the original build, but I think I can probably make some of those with my vinyl cutter. I bought a replacement decal sheet, for a son of a digger build a few years ago and they were horrible which is why I eventually designed a new livery for that monster truck. Unfortunately MSI decals don’t show you the close up detail of their decals so I cant tell if they are scanned and all jagged or redrawn which is how I’d do them. Either way, looking forward to your running video because mine will probably wind up a shelf queen.

Yes, feeling a lot better, this cough is still here but that too is getting better. 2 weeks was more than enough for me! I had to get one when they released it. When it came out last I was kind of away from the hobby and just running what I had occasionally. Now it was a must have for the collection! I have had great luck with MCI decals, almost all of my older kits have TBG bodies and MCI decals on them. Give it a few more weeks and you may find a re-re set on eBay from kits being parted out. I will get mine out once the track returns to buggy running conditions! Still buried under snow and ice, mostly turning to ice from the freeze/thaw days!

I don't want to say, I want everyone to watch their videos. I will say one was a kit and one was a RTR. The 6x6 kits are really fun, they are much faster and much more agile than they look like they should be! I think all of us on YT are probably bad influences on everyone, I know a lot of my purchases are based on other videos! No worries on sending anything over any time soon. Let me get some of this other stuff finished and out of the way. You have been more than generous! I do greatly appreciate it, I just need to dig out of the backlog some here. I really need to just commit and slap some paint on the MRC and and get it out for a drive. I have tried several times to replicate the paint right and the white is giving me a load of trouble. I am about ready to sand it all down and paint the exterior and call it, I am not sure painting it from underneath is going to work out.

It’s funny when you criticize your own work on your models, guys who build them tend to be their own worst critics. I built a Sand Viper a while back and every time I look at it, I wince a little because the big decals on the front are not even. My nephew looked at it and he couldn’t even see what I was talking about. Your cars look awesome, I think I like the “old” Super Astute more than I like the new TD2 Astute. I don’t have to worry much about snow here in Texas, but it has gotten mighty chilly (or, as “chilly” as Texas gets), so I haven’t run my cars much either. I look forward to seeing your new cars run.

Yeah, I know... when we build them we notice every tiny issue with them! With as rough as I was feeling and as much cold meds that were in me I am just very happy it all works and there were no extra parts! LOL! I agree, the old buggies are better looking than the new versions. The TD cars I have no real interest in. Maybe one day I will regret not getting one but I doubt it! LOL! I know you guys did cool off a lot, I think it will be coming back next week too. Once I can get them out for a run I will, everything is still coved in snow/ice right now!

Love the Comical Grasshopper and the Astute looks amazing . Too bad the Astute didn't come out a little earler...it would have given the RC 10 and the Ultima some competition in the 80's.

Nice vid! Question maybe a dumb one but what's the difference between diff oil and grease and is one preferred over the other

Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed it. No, not a dumb question at all. The main difference it the grease is fairly limited on the resistance it can offer. It is mainly designed to lubricate and reduce wear. You can tune with it but the rang of thick and thin grease is fairly close in range of each other. The diff oil is a silicone oil that has a huge range of thicknesses to them from very thin like shock oil all the pay up to extremely thick weights that are a putty or almost a rubber like consistency. It both lubricates well but also add a greater range of resistance inside the diffs to really be able to tune how much the internal gears can rotate. On regular RCs like the Astute you can easily use grease to control the diff action but on something like the 4s Kagama with loads of power and big heavy tires you need something far thicker and more reliable to keep the diffs from unloading and making one tire spin at hyper speeds while the others are barely moving. In it there is a front rear and center diff to tune. The front is to try and control the left and right from spinning out of control of each other but still allowing it to move independently for cornering. The rear is similar and you need to keep it so it can allow one to spin faster when needed but still limit it from be excessive. The center diff is to split the power from front to the rear. Thinner means less chance of wheelies or back flips but also means the front will often be digging around much faster than the rear under acceleration. Thicker means the front and rear get more equal power but the odds of it gripping too much in the rear and pulling wheelies or even backflips under hard acceleration. You can change the weights of the diff oils in al of them to get the RC to launch well, turn well and be much more stable under acceleration or heavy breaking with the oils.

@ As long as it is a gasketed diff you can use oil, in the unsealed diffs like many Tamiya kits you'll still want to use grease as it will stay in it and not leak out.
