They are fun to look at and look fun just sitting there. They did a really great job smooshing them up and putting them on a fun chassis. I am hoping it may be dry enough tomorrow to get out for a run with it. Not as squishy we as it has been and there is actually sun shining today! Next time you see them on sale you need to scoop one up!

The paint color I am going with will blend in better with the black plastics so it should look ok with the black diff cover showing up front. If not then I may. I am kind of surprised then did not have a small nose piece for it, they have done it one other kits, maybe not ones this old though.

These kit builds look fun and a but tedious. I would be afraid something would fall off the table and not allow me to finish build the kit. But clearly you’re on top of your game when it come to these kit builds

Having hardware trays or even a old muffin tin or egg carton to separate and keep things safely in one place is the best way to do it. For a lot of the hardware they give you one or two extras, plus I have a tone of spares from previous builds extras. Sadly that spring washer is not one of the items they give you a spare for and I do not have spares for so it was a good thing it found me!!! The kits are pretty easy to build, occasionally you find a step that take a moment to figure out but the instructions are very good!

I thought about it but didn't want to risk making things worse it is attacked the resin in the FRP. I can live with it, just a signature goof, all of them have some imperfection to them. I'll consider it a birthmark! LOL!

Well, I guess I’ve learned that superglue can be used on the edge of the FRP chassis. Never tried that before. When I start getting into my kit and building them I’m definitely gonna try that as well as that particular BSI glue, thanks for the tip. It does look like a pretty good build.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 2 сағат бұрын
Yes, it works really well to help protect it over time. Some fine sand paper around the edges to get rid of the roughness and then poor out a puddle of glue on the polyethylene bags the kit comes in and use a cotton swap to apply it around the edges. I found soaking the cotton swap and lightly rolling it is much better than "painting" it on, it doesn't pull out the cotton. I have done it many times and this time the glue did not want to cure. It is a few years old and has lost most of it oomph! I should have gave the activator a little more time and it would have hardened up. All of my build have some sort of minor flaw in them so smudges are this one's.

I am hoping the paint job and the decals I am going to do look as good on it as I think it will. I am going to try and get it done this weekend but have a good long to-do list to get through first before I can play. Some folks love and swear by ball diffs, I prefer the gear diffs as the are super simple and are pretty much bulletproof! Ball diffs can be much more temperamental and high maintenance. The flying wedge should have all the downforce! LOL! I have never been a huge fan of the look of it but I am hoping in person it will be much more appealing!

Thanks Joe! I love the chassis, not a huge fan of the body. I am hoping with the paint and decals I am using will help it out some. It has always looked like a door stop to me so I am hoping in person it will look a lot better. I have had a few bit fly/roll off and never get found again and it is usually not a problem as I have a lot of spare hardware but these spring washers I do not have any of so it was a "have to find it" situation. Thankfully it found me! One night I came up from tinkering and my wife asked what the shiny thing in my beard was, it was the e-clip I sent pinging off and could not find! LOL!

It is a sharp looking chassis and it feels really nice on the bench! I think it will be a ripper once I can get it out on the track. I am not a ball diff guy at all so I am guessing the cup washers put the right amount of tension on the diff to keep it in tune. We will see how it goes. The Manta Ray diffs should fit right in there so if I don't like these I can drop a set of those in there! Take care and have a great weekend!

Tamiya builders know that chassis take a few hours, but the bodies can take a few days, especially if you have a lot of decals and a 9 to 5 job. Every few months, I do what I call "body week." I pull out 3 or 4 boddies, work them up, and put them back in their kits. I started doing this when I realized most rc builders tend to have a backlog of kits waiting to be built.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 8 сағат бұрын
Yes, the chassis builds go too fast and the bodies ten to take too long! LOL! I much prefer the assembly process over the paint and decals although that it when it really does come to life! I see these body painters cranking out a dozen or more bodies a week, I would lose my mind! I find it tedious and stress full at time trying to get the paint done well, I rarely do more than two at a time. I really should start with the bodies and end with the builds but I would then probably put off the builds even longer....

Yes, the parts search happens pretty much every kit, usually just a dropped screw and if I can't find it immediately I just grab one out of the parts bin. This however I have no spares nor do they give you any in the kit so it was a "find it or else" situation! I had to laugh when it found me after giving up and sitting back to ponder my next move... It goes together really well, just like any other Tamiya kit honestly just a few less plastic bits! Gluing the FRP bits usually goes much better. If you ever do it just save some of the thick plastic bags from the kit to work on as the glue will not stick well to the polypropylene bags, don't use the thin crinkly ones! The Manta Ray is a much less expensive one to get and it ran great out on the track. Same general chassis layout but with a plasitc tub chassis.

Great looking kit Addam, is there a company that makes metal gears to replace all plastic ones in this kit? Not a fan of plastic gears. I would imagine it would make it more robust and no worries of early possible destruction.
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 9 сағат бұрын
I have seen in the past on eBay some metal gear parts for it but not the whole drivetrain that I can recall. I think with the overall width of the gears these should be able to take a ton of abuse without failing. With the motor I have in it and knowing the grip on my track I have no worries at all. On carpet they would get more stress but should still hold up fine. A lot of others out there from Tamiya with much narrower gears that hold up to a lot of power and grip really well. Search around on eBay, it is the only place I can recall seeing any metal gears listed previously.

I did think about the iridescent paint on it but I am getting away from the green all together. Fingers crossed it turns out looking good, looks great in my head but in real life sometimes it doesn't work as well. I am sure it will look fine, if not I order a new body and it becomes the runner body! LOL!! Just a tip, when you do use the iridescent paint, go slow with very light coats. It comes out basically clear and it sprays on very quickly so it is easy to get runs and buildup in corners so a few very light coats to get it built up evenly works the best.

Does the manual say to put superglue on these frp edges?
@AddamsPlayground
@AddamsPlayground 9 сағат бұрын
No, just an old school racer trick that has been used for as long as I can remember. You just squirt some out on a one of the plastic bags from the kit and then use a cotton swap (Q-tip) to kind of paint it on the edges. Normally it dries super fast but my glue is a few years old and it is slow to cure now.
@nc6766

@@AddamsPlayground You can use acetone (often found in nail polish / nail varnish remover) to clean up the superglue on the chassis. Just test it in a hidden area first to make sure it doesn't discolour or effect the chassis material.

You'll love this one. I have the Evo and it's awesome. The best Tamiya I've owned. Can't wait to see you one finished

I think it will a really nice one. I am going to try and get the body done this weekend but I have a pile of chores around here to do so we will see. I am looking forward to see how my plans for it turn out! I think it will look pretty slick!

Another nice build. I always seem to make a mess with super glue too. No matter how careful I am.

Yeah, it does seem to go sideways quickly sometimes! I had two to choose from, super thin and this and I did not want the super thing to drip or run as I was trying to use it. The thicker stuff did not want to cure quickly at all so I may have gotten better results with the thin.. or glued it to my finger! LOL!

LOL, no went a bit faster than the old sport tuned in this one. I think it will do very well in there and scoot around the track well with it!

I feel the same way about the DT-04. Glad to see something new but not sure if I like it or not. The Tamiya offerings seemed a little underwhelming. I guess they can’t have a ton of hits every year. If you like BMWs then they did have a lot there. The F104 chassis looked awesome but not for me. That needs super flat smooth surfaces. I don’t have anywhere like that to run it.

Yeah I cannot get over the clunky cheap look to the DT04, I like the rest of it but the body panels just looked lazy. There was a little of everything besides truck style kits, I think the early notice of the HCT and the Bigwig kind of took some excitement out of the announcements. I hope to get the Mini or at least a body set or two. I do like the TRF104 but like you have no good place to run it and it is so fancy I wouldn't want to bang it all up either. There is a lot more year left and they always drop a few cool ones throughout the year. Next year should be the one where they come out guns blazing and hopefully drop a ton of cool re-releases!

I plan to get the body kits because I love them, but the BT-01 chassis is just awful, and I don't want to own it.

I have not built my BT01 chassis yet, I have heard it is much more wiggly than the MB01. I was fine with the MB01 after some shims but have yet to see how the BT01 does.

Yes, I am sure there will be several big ones out next year. They better do more than a silly Porsche with a fancy box next year! LOL

Honda City Turbo and The Fighter Nxgen all day. I see the Lego vibe you're talking about, but let's face it at the end of the day, even if it's a $1000 car, they're all still toys. The Honda City Turbo looks just as toyish, but I love it. It even has a little doll in it. Ya know? The others look pretty cool, but those are my two picks. Thanks for the insight. Catch ya in the next one.

The HCT is super cool and I am looking forward to finally being able to afford one! Tamiya has always march to the beat of their own drum! They have very scale and very fanciful kits and everything in between but none of the have ever stuck me as really "cheap" looking. The DT04 to me looks cheap, like an Ali Express knockoff of the BBX. They can do so much better with bodies and do it cheaply, look at their JR racer line of inexpensive slot racers, those are all under $20 and none of them look this clunky and toyish. I agree we are all playing with toys, there is no getting around it. They just don't generally look like it! I am probably being too harsh on it, but for the $160 kit price (estimated) I expect a bit more. They are just for fun and since it is not on my top to-get list I will focus on the others I do like and want! Plenty of options for sure! Take care and sorry about the huge reply! LOL

The Tamiya bodies always look great, with the exception of the new Fighter NXGen. You mentioned it's toy like and Lego like which is correct. May be it was done on purpose to attract some young buyers. I have never figured out why Tamiya does things. In my area there are some hard core Tamiya fans. In fact one of the most popular racing classes is the TT02 class. I don't think Tamiya buggies are not popular because there are too many other buggies which are faster and more durable. I think their market choices are focused on what they want in Japan and Asia. The European car bodies are very popular in Europe, but they're are just too expensive. If I chose a car from the new releases it would be the Honda City Turbo, which would. be fun. I wonder if they will include bearings? The others don't interest me or are too expensive. The thing I always forget is that Tamiya is huge model maker and they don't have to toally depend on their r/c line. If they wanted to get younger people interested they could take their comical series and drop the price down and do some advertising to young people. They are so popular they don't have to.

Yeah, I can't get over the clunky and toy/legoish looking body. Tamiya is so good at designing interesting bodies and just seemed to kind of not use any of their talent and effort on it. The chassis is cool and is like a BBX lite and the body is similar but not LOL! I know there is a ton of TT02 racing in the UK and across Europe. I am sure there are pockets of it here as well. I am excited for the HCT and the Bigwig as i have been trying to chase a good one down for some time! Now I can get both without breaking the bank! I agree making the fun and cute ones more affordable would do a lot to getting kids into the hobby. Sadly they all want a super fast, skate park bashing RTR mostly. Building a kit is a completely foreign idea for so many kids these days, if it doesn't come with an app they don't care LOL!

I was very happy to see the Mini make a comeback! I hope I can swing all three kits but The HCT and Bigwig are priority, I have been hunting those for a while now and finally can get a kit I can afford LOL! Worst case I get a body set and drop it on a M05 chassis I have here that needs rebuilding. I have a fun custom idea for it! I hope you can get one as well!

My first anly tamiya kit is a tt02, mostly because I could use a lipo in it. I've always wished they used less plastic and use more durable materials

@BC-rc if they do then it becomes terribly expensive! I grew up with all the plastic chassis ones so I feel right at home with them 😂
