I'm an HVAC contractor in Phoenix. I've been preaching this type of attic upgrade for over 20 years. Home builders won't do it because they want the cheapest final product (which is blown in insulation). The home buyers need to drive the industry to incorporate this in every new home. The cost is minimal compared to the price of the home, but the payback is immediate and offers the higher ROI of ANY investment in your home. Over 30% of every A/C electric bill is wasted money due to hot attics in Phoenix.

The energy savings isn't the best. You've been preaching for 20 years for better attic insulation - I've been preaching for 40 years for better HVAC installers responsible enough to not install mechanical equipment in the attic 0 stupid, stupid, stupid. You might learn to install your equipment responsibility before you weigh in on insulation techniques and products. Master your own trade before you confuse consumers about someone else's trade.

I'm sure Larry knows this by now but for others .....You cannot directly measure the surface temperature of low emissivity materials particularly shiny foil faced materials. Usually a piece of black electricians tape will do to measure that temperature. A large part of that 120 degrees he measured on the silver duct was reflected radiant heat from the roof. The actual temperature could be between 80 and 130 degrees depending on whether the A/C was on/off at the time or how long it had been on on/off. And it could have very well been 120 if the unit had been off for a good while allowing the actual temperature of the duct to match the reflected heat from the roof. The point he is making is rock solid though.

@larrymaloney877
@larrymaloney877 4 жыл бұрын
@@jimknowles5483 , notice the video is cut (edited) several times, especially when interviewing the homeowner. Insulation, even poor insulation, installed in less-than-ideal areas usually helps in some way. The rafter foam board lessons the UV heat load on the attic insulation beneath his feet but does not address the actual heat transfer problem from 2nd story-to-attic. Before I spent a small fortune buying what he's hyping, "super attic," I'd put money into creating a monolithic barrier between the second-story ceiling and the attic. If you want to spend more money, the attic rafters can be insulated to be truly" super" with different materials and better workmanship. If your huge attic is 80 degrees in the summertime it's because you are paying to cool it. I don't call hat so super. It's certainly not evidence of a "super attic," just a super wallet. BTY, only a dummy installs HVAC equipment in the attic. We can cover ducts but the rest is sinful! The homeowner might be experiencing the lesser-of-two-evils and paying to cool the attic helps keep his poorly place HVAC equipment alive. An insulation patch job does not fix weak attic insulation and an ill-advised attic HVAC placement.

5:58 to 6:04 timestamp: First at 5:58 you see that insulation in the floor near the eaves may be blocking air flow. We don't see baffles. Then towards the end of the timestamp at 6:01 they're putting up a two-sided radiant barrier with what looks like one-inch-thick insulation between it. No, apparent insulation behind that and baffles to ensure air flow gap. That radiant barrier is not enough R- value. It needs baffles (purchased or DIY) and then insulation behind that then a radiant barrier. Better yet, do baffle, then radiant barrier, then insulation and then radiant barrier again to make the attic conditioned. Make sure it's air sealed as best as possible with reflective tape at each layer. At that point you don't need to seal the attic floor (ceiling of rooms below) to ensure closing the envelope. Finally, replace tape and types on ducting while ensuring its flow is uninterrupted and not bent; gradually changes in direction. Add extra insulation around air intake from outside without impeding airflow. Now that the attic is done, go to work on the lowest levels of the home to seal off and insulate the unconditioned space to conditioned. Ensure the conditioned space has good air flow with outside while avoiding bug and rodent penetrations. Finally work your way up to the middle floors of the home sealing as you go. Insulate the inside door to the garage and consider insulating the garage door itself as a final improvement. (easy to follow DIY KZbin videos on that for ~$100) Setup cheap heat and humidity sensors and monitor them to ensure no excess humdity. Humidity/water leads to trouble like mold. www.buildingscience.com buildingscience.reddit.com

@claude77573

Warm air, being less dense than cool air, rises. Humid air, being less dense than dry air, also rises. So you have the warmest and most humid air at the top of cathedral ceilings and the top point of attics. (The rise of less dense warmer air between floors and between the top floor and attic is known as stack effect, but that’s another ballgame). Converting from an unvented attic to a vented attic does not address humidity at the highest points of the attic. If you live in the Arizona desert or in another low humidity climate, no problem. If you live in humid areas along the Gulf Coast or southern Atlantic seaboard, it’s a big problem. The humidity in an unvented attic can be addressed by a small dehumidifier. The next issue with an unvented attic is stale air. A modest ERV (energy recovery ventilator) could address this. So, in my way of thinking, a more complete solution would be a “semi-conditioned” attic instead of just an unvented attic.

Diamond Shamrock made some 'foamed ceramic bead' insulation back in the early 1980's. Claimed a maximum R-value of 70 at just 3" depth, with diminishing efficiency after 3". The SAME ceramic insulation as the Space Shuttle tiles. We installed some in a couple of homes and it seemed to be as per specs. We did a demo for the 'exxon building' in Houston, but they eventually opted for additional exterior low-e glazing. I think one other chemical company made some as well for a couple of years.

The foam is about R20 before radiant barrier effect. The difference is the attic is sealed. If you foam the rafters your not sealed so not stopping the stack effect. Also if the roof leaks behind the foam it can easily rot out and when they repair roof you loose insulation on that part. An encapsulated attic still has air flow in the rafters so if you have a leak it can dry naturally and if you need roof repairs your insulation is not damaged in the process.

@@fruitf7064, blown cellulose is superior to blown fiberglass. Even superior cellulose can't provide optimal energy savings and comfort when improperly installed. Knee walls cannot be "loose-filled," treat them like enclosed cavities. You may need to enclose the backside with webbing or another cover so cellulose can be "dense-packed" like the exterior walls. Likewise, any sloped ceilings should be dense-packed. If fiberglass batting is already in the slopes, it might be best to leave it, since it was classified as carcinogenic when installed. Insert a hose over top and seal the slope and the nasty fiberglass with densely-packed cellulose insulation. If this project is a cape cod style home, you have a flat ceiling area behind the kneewall so R-49 is my starting point, possibly more dependant on geographic area. Likewise, the flat ceiling above the slopes gets an equivalent R-49. And any attic access openings should be sealed with R-49, otherwise, it's like having an open window in the attic. Installed correctly, cellulose will never settle in walls. Rodents like to nest in fiberglass, so do bees. Done correctly, you should never need to insulate those areas again.

As far as I know, there are 3 kinds: air ducks, heat ducks, and cool ducks. The air ducks are, as the name suggests, made out of air, so they don't eat much, although they sometimes make a creepy sound. Heat ducks can be very noisy, and are always demanding fuel. Fortunately, they like human farts a lot; and, especially if you are a fat American like me, there is always plenty. Cool ducks like farts too, but they won't admit it; because like, they're cool....... Overall, this much better than the medieval system, where you had to have cows in your basement, for heat. They stink and have no interest in moving their own poop. And you can imagine how many hundreds of ducks you would have to have, just to try to keep the cow farts under control. I hope this helps.

This is so wrong and out-of-date. There are so many variables you cannot have a "one solution fits all" attic insulation system. Depending on the climate, your attic roof should either be vented (via soffit vents or whatever) in order to prevent build-up of moisture and mold, or un-vented and sealed (though I've yet to find anyone using this). Vented roof spaces should also have a gap of at least 50mm behind the insulation boards like ones used in the video to allow air circulation, this prevents moisture build-up.

Your FLIR unit shows over 175F with super attic, 145F without it. That's a 30F increase. The problem is not the hot ducts in the attic really, that's a symptom. Using Fred Flintstone technology that uses ducting is the problem. Using a mini split eliminates duct losses all together and have been used around the world for over 40 years.

Texas A&M did a study of 'radiant barriers' back in the 1980's. I think it showed little to no added degradation over the 'normal life' of an asphalt shingle roof.

kenny play A mini split system is a small hvac system that is a 24"X24 fan unit mounted outside. Small pipes carry the heated/cooled air from said fan unit into the structure. They can be mounted just about anywhere and are super efficient. Basically a tiny heat pump unit. Google it.

This has been studied: radiant barriers add about 2 - 8 F to the temp of the shingles and the shingles are rated to withstand 200 F. So they shouldn't hurt the life of the shingles.

If you are even half handy, do this yourself. It's a customizable puzzle. Cut and tape.

Do houses have attics? It's wasted space, and you don't use it! Yeah you put stuff up there then forget it! What's the point? All that captured eat in the summer! It's stupid! The same is true in the weather with the cold! Get rid of peaked roofs! And save money!
