This is a good lesson especially because it's in standard tuning. A lot of people (even experienced players) will quit playing slide because the moment they start because it usually sounds so awful at first - like an asthmatic cat. What a lot of players don't know is that it doesn't take a whole lot of practice before you can basically sound passable on slide. I like that the teacher here is talking about right-hand muting too- which is a really critical component when playing in standard tuning. Great beginner lesson.

Had a bit of a mate many moons ago who was one of the best slide players in the world, but he mostly played it for himself. Professionally he played more of almost every other style, than slide, even the old goanna would get more of a run. Sitting in his lounge listening to him just playing for himself was a massive privilege because while he was great at everything, his slide was something else, plus he never played anything to show off, only employed maestroship if it improved the musicality.

I am switching to slide from normal playing due to health issues with my hands. If I can do it, so can you. It will take work and lots of practice but you can do it. And remember, you don't ever have to become Derek Trucks, you can have fun just making sounds and tunes that you enjoy making. Most importantly, remember that we ALL get frustrated at some point (I play normal guitar but slide is frustrating me right now) but that frustration is no reason to give up...just keep working at it and you will progress at some point. Good luck.

Have you tried tuning your guitar to open E or open G for playing slide guitar yet? Open E is my favourite. This video is great but most people use alternate tunings for playing slide. Open E is great because the root note is always on the low E string and when you slide up to the 5th and 7th frets you have your A and B chords.

rockstarlpl86 145 If you buy a cheap guitar as a beginner, chances are high that you won‘t really latch on to playing, because you not only have to conquer new terrain, but you also have to compensate for the shortcomings of your instrument all the time. I own 50 different instruments. Some of them I frequently play on stage. But it‘s not just the common ones like guitar, sax, drums, or piano that need a steady amount of attention. The more exotic ones like pedal steel, panflute, steel drums, banjo, kalimba etc. also have to be played at least once every week for me to stay proficient enough to perform on them in the band setting or solo. And guess what. The cheaper ones stay behind. Not because they suck entirely - they‘re all playable - and not because I don‘t want to master them. They just don‘t feel right. And probably because I instinctively shunn the time they would steal. Taking that experience, I can only recommend not to buy cheap instruments, but to go for the best you can get and afford. I‘m sure you will not regret this move. Oh, and yes - I still play the Les Paul that my parents bought me way back in the summer of 69 and I still love it. Without it, I probably wouldn‘t be playing anything today. 🙂

This is a great lesson for me, a novice who bought a cheap electric resonator guitar on a whim during my honeymoon road trip this past Fall. I haven't had much chance to really sit down and practice slide, but I was happy to see you talk about the pyramid posture because I just went to that by default. I didn't know it was a certified technique; it just felt like it gave me better control of the slide while keeping my index finger as my string muting backstop. I'm also thankful you did this in standard tuning since I tend to play the resonator more traditionally when writing songs and don't want to have to keep changing the tunings.

Admiration - For playing slide guitare: the bottle neck is better than store bought. What you should consider is finding the right bottle and removing the neck safety May require work smoothing down thw sharp jagged edges, but woth it since the bottle neck covers more strings at once and achives a better sound.

Thanks for the very helpful tutorial. Perhaps you will share some tips about playing melodies that include the need to angle the glass slider, such as E5 note (9th fret) with C6 (8th fret). I'm thinking about using a second guitar with a flat and higher saddle, just for use in the recording studio for slide parts; since I play an acoustic instrument. Wouldn't the flat contour of strings reduce the artifact produced by wound strings with a curved saddle?
@joconnor87953 жыл бұрын
Single note and dyads are not the limits for slide. I use a slide to create every diatonic chord up to 13th. Here's how. I have an 8 string guitar tuned to Emaj 13. The tuning is in 3rds rather than 4ths. E G# B D# F# A C# E. That's 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 1 in E. Emaj 13 or E Ionian scale over 2 octaves. Move up 3 frets and it's E Aeolian b3 5 b7 2 4 b6 1 b3. 2 more and it's E Mixolydian 4 6 1 3 5 b7 2 4, etc. I use a custom ceramic extra long slide. I also use a B Bender to raise the A string to A#. That shifts the tuning to Emaj13/#11, the Lydian mode, and provides a second position for all the chords and scales. Flatten the G# string to G and the tuning is E 1 b3 5 7 9 11 13 1, the E Melodic Minor, or Jazz scale, with its 7 modes. The Mixolydian mode for Melodic Minor is a favorite - 1 2 3 4 5 b6 b7. I tend to think outside the box. Actually, the box and I are often in different zip codes.

Try a steel slide on nickel wound .16 ghs dobro strings on a lap steel tuned to open G or open E. Forget about playing slide on regular gauge strings on a typical electric guitar. And use a vintage tube amp turned up to 11 for maximum distortion/square waves. Overdrive the preamp by turning up both the volume and tone on the lap steel for a truly scary slide guitar sound.

You've just brought home to me the degree of difficulty I face in having to re-learn all I've forgotten about slide playing, not having done it since the 1970s. I've gone from bring one of Australia's best Blues-Rock guitarists to being almost completely unable to play guitar at all because of a condition called ridiculopathy. Yeah, that's actually a thing. The nerves that come off the spinal chord and go to the hands are the Radial and Ulna nerves. So far my ring finger and pinky on my left hand are completely useless. Those nerves have been severely curtailed by the worn and bulging discs between my neck vertebrae. It's just started in my right hand. I'm extremely right handed and it looks like my only option when it comes to playing guitar is to become a decent slide guitarist. Even simple finger-picking is hard for me due to the thickness of my fingers. I can't get my finger into the neck of a wine bottle, more's the pity. So I have to make do with using my trusty pick. Thanks for sharing this lesson. Even though it's aimed at beginners, I still learned something I didn't know before. Hey! Nutbush City Limits just came on my radio here. I used to duplicate Ike's theremin solo using my slide with my old Tele back in the day.

The he's gonna phone me for a telephone consult, probably next Thursday with his take on the MRI results. Then I suppose the ball is in his court. He's pretty good with a cortisone needle, and I'm really hoping that cortisone will once again become my new best friend. I sold one of my Gibson ES-355s the other week and with some of the money I got a Gretsch Electromatic double cutaway in gleaming white, and that's gonna be my main slide guitar. If all I can play is slide, may as well play it on a great looking guitar!

@@arthurblackhistoric You have an awesome attitude facing such a battle. Any way wanted to wish you the best. I have tried every kind of exercise under the sun to get those 2 fingers to function but to no avail. Its been 8 years i think. As far as i know i dont have any disc issues in my neck so I think mine is due to having a stroke. If I didnt have such shitty medical coverage i would see a doctor but so far that has been a ridiculous fucking waste of time. One doesnt even see a dr. One see's a P.A. who doesn't know squat. Cest la vie. Saw some of your videos, you rock brother!

@@Paleoman . . Firstly, thanks for your kind compliment. I went from that ability to not even being able to play a chord on the guitar virtually overnight. I can't even roll spaghetti on my fork with my left hand now. Now . . I think you'd be able to tell if you did have disc issues in your neck. When I turn my head to the left or right, especially if I've been facing straight ahead for a little while, my neck makes sounds in my head like someone trying to open a packet of potato chips! As for the stroke . . have you had a stroke? Or is it that you think you may have had what is known as a silent stroke? Back in late 1999 I caught one of those flu bugs that knocked me flat on my back for a whole week. I'd wake up in the morning, go for a pee, and have to go back to bed because I had no energy left. After I recovered I noticed something peculiar happening. I began tripping over nothing.It seemed that if someone to my left called me to come over there, there'd be no problem. But if someone to my right called me to come over there, I'd be tripping over nothing trying to do that. Also going up and down stairs became dangerous. My right foot used to catch on the step my left foot was on. That caused me to fall down the entire flight of the front steps at my mother's place one day and I landed on my AC joint in my left shoulder which created a whole other set of problems we won't go into here. My doctor back then, who was also qualified as a chiropractor, tried giving me manipulation which had no effect at all. Then he got me a CT scan of my pelvis to see if there was something happening in my lower back or my hips, which came back all clear. That was when he said the most likely cause was a silent stroke. With my feeling so awful with the flu I wouldn't have likely noticed any stroke symptoms. I eventually kinda-sorta recovered, but to this day I don't like walking while carrying something out in front of me. I always take care walking up, and especially *down* stairs and always use the hand rail. I look down when walking to see where I'm putting my feet, just to be safe. I don't feel safe wearing bike boots if I have to go up or down steps. The inch-high heels catch on steps going down if I'm not super careful. That walking and falling thing, combined with my AC injury made life extremely hard going for the first half of 2000. I'd started getting busier with work, and lugging my PA and stuff into and out of venues became pretty difficult. I bought myself a trolley with two extra castor wheels to steer it while using it horizontally with the handle vertical. That came in particularly handy when I scored the best gig in Brisbane in 2000. Every Saturday at the Plough Inn at Southbank, Brisbane's premiere tourist spot! I had to park in the underground car park and go up in the elevator, then wheel my trolley piled with gear through the packed Saturday markets to the beer garden. Two such trips was all it took with that trolley. Best $80 I ever spent.

@@arthurblackhistoric Your welcome, credit is given to performances such as yours where the performer gives it everything they have and play from the heart. I know exactly where you are coming from when you say you wake one morning to find you canot make the simplest chord. I can not even make an E minor or even the simple bar chord. As to the stroke, first I had what is called an "aortic disection" which is where the lining of your aorta peels off floats off then gets lodged in an artery in your brain. In 80% of cases, its fatal. I was lucky enough to be in the 20% that live. It probably was the result of having high blood pressure for most of my life and n ot being aware of it. Also weighing 300 lbs was not very healthy. I managed to shed 100lbs 20 yrs ago and have been at 200 ever since. I was told I would probably have a series of minor strokes due to the high blood pressure. Its something I dont like thinking about since it could happen again at any time. I just hope it doesnt happen when i am driving. The weird thing about virus is there is so much they dont know about them, where they lodge in your body, long term effects etc. A lot of them wind up residing in the actual nerve fiber itself. An example is Herpes. Both types, simple and venereal reside in the end of the neuron. When the virus is agitated or stimulated it replicates causing blisters to appear that are apparently very painful. This is due to their erupting from the neuron or nerve itself. If this were to happen within a nerve coming off your spinal cord who knows what the side effects might be. Bells Palsy causes half of ones face to be paralyzed. This is from a virus. Shingle's is from the virus that causes Chiken Pox yet it happens 20 to 30 or more years after the initial infection. I cant remember but it too might reside in nerve endings. Seeing how you mention it affected one side of your body and balance it does sound like a stroke of some type. Virus are strange creatures. Not really alive but able to replicate and live on using the host they reside in to perpetuate their existance yet causing all kinds of side effects in doing so. The more I think about it, its possible whatever bug you caught was not the flu but something else. With many different types of virus The inital sickness , the fever and weakness one experiences is your body fighting off the virus. The effe ct of the fever one experiences is to kill the virus or bacterium that has infected you. The fever will either kill you in some cases or you survive and make a recovery. With modern medicine one usually survives but easily 150 years ago it was 50/50. I could ramble on and on about virus but suffice to say there is so much they just dont know about them although with most of them the initial infection is the same; fever and weakness, what comes afterwards varies with what type of virus it is. Lugging gear around sucks especially with Tube amplifiers. I have my tube amp i bought in 1982. it weighsclose to 70 lb. Its an Acoustic Controls corp brand, a heavy beast. I also have a Carvin 100 watt amp that I dont use anymore because its just too loud. The first one I mentioned is only 60 watts but so darn heavy it doesnt move around much. I use a furniture dolly to move it when it needs to be moved which isnt often lol! I hope your Dr is able to pinpoint a cause comes up with a successful treatment plan. To develop such talent as yours and have it disappear through no fault of your own just is n ot right. Having the right attitude is the first step in beating this and that you have. I am hoping for the best outcome. Stay positive blues brother and dont stop rockin!

And for you Little Feat fans, Lowell George used a Sears Craftsman 11/16" spark plug socket. He always said if he dropped it and it cracked or broke, he could go to any Sears and they would replace it. Fun fact.
