Funny thing really, only three major gods survive GoW, and they're all females whose names start with the letter A. Aphrodite, obvously, survives by giving Kratos nookie whenever he wants. Athena, despite being run through in GoW II, is definitely still alive in her altered, astral form, as shown in this game. And Artemis, though she never shows up again after gifting Kratos her Blade as a secondary weapon in the first game, is not amongst those Kratos has slain and so can be assumed to have survived, maybe also fleeing to another region as Kratos did.

I counted Athena as she can move freely, interact with the real world, talk to people, manipulate objects - she's alive, just in an altered state. In what way is Zeus alive? He rises from his corporeal form at the end of God of War 3, true, but Kratos the proceeds to kill him with his bare hands as the player mashes circle until the entire screen is saturated in blood - you unequivocally kill Zeus. The versions in this game are just the memories and echoes that Hel is drawing from Kratos and giving form.

I figured Zeus was sort of alive since Kratos saw that what weird image of him in the clouds earlier. But maybe he was just something Hel conjured up like you said? It wasn't clear. I still don't count Athena since even if she's alive now Kratos still killed her. Artemis and Aphrodite were never killed by him at all.

I really love this game. I never played the old GoW games, although now I really should, but I knew all about the excellent combat and random sex scenes and how hype it was in general. However, as someone coming in semi-new not knowing much about Kratos' past it gives you a different perspective, more similar to Atreus', that is no doubt way different than a returning player. This is how you reboot a series and make it accessible to players new and old, in my opinion.

You know, like the good old days where people made sure they set the game up to their preferences first. Nowadays they just grab the controller and start mashing buttons with their brain turned off.

You might ask "why would Hel have harpoons to catch sky ships?" My answer- everyone is in Hel for a long, long time with little better to do than try to escape and play an eternal game of cat and mouse. So the smart ones come up with ideas, and they have a long, long time to spread taht idea while trying to get help for making tehir airships. And air ships are a decent answer for getting out of most prisons.
