Forced to pass Tarkenton was like a darting deer amongst a pack of howling wolves . In this SB the mantel of greatness vividly passed from from Minn purple people eaters to the steel curtain defense. Two of the most iconic lines in NFL FILMS .

Masterful job by Coach Noll, a young dynasty on the rise. Seeing the players begin to realize they were champions, singing and hugging. Counting down the clock... and finally the trophy presentation to such a great and humble owner, Mr Art Rooney. Special time, friends...

And the Los Angeles Rams got jammed in the last 2 seasons during those games they lost: 1973: The Rams(12-2) lost the Divisional Playoff Game at Dallas(10-4). 1974: The Rams(10-4) lost the NFC Championship Game at Minnesota(10-4). Earlier in the season, the Rams defeated the Minnesota Vikings at Los Angeles, 20-17.
@npc1092 жыл бұрын
@@Jiltedin2007 the Rams in the 70s had a defense that was comparable to the Steelers in pure domination...they just kept running into the Dallas/Minnesota buzz saw every year in the playoffs...and somehow probably their "worst team" of that era broke through in 79...and played even or better than Pittsburgh for 3-1/2 quarters of Super Bowl 14. The Rams great defense of that era seems to be lost to history.

8:11 What a hit by Glen Edwards. This hit and the hit delivered by Jack Tatum of the Raiders two years later in Super Bowl 11 might just be the greatest two hits in all of Super Bowl history . . . . . . ?? In each case, a poor Vikings wide receiver was the victim.

The ball was coming out before Browns butt hit the ground. The correct call was initially made, yet overturned by the guy who saw the play form Browns's back, NO WAY could he see the ball coming out nor did he have any business overturning that call. Incidentally, this was the same official involved in the Rob Lytle fumble 17:27

you are wrong, if you watch the nfl official vid of the game, the CORRECT call was made by the ref who was directly viewing brown, not the incorrect call that was made INITIALLY by the ref BEHIND BROWN, so he couldnt see the player touch the ground first.

This video exposes a major issue with the Vikings offense of the 1970's. While I understand that QB Fran Tarkenton is right handed and they have an All-Pro RT in Ron Yary, the team was not very well balanced and predominately operated to their right. This made it more simpler to game plan against them. The previous SB, they had to start a 3rd stringer at RG but continued to operate predominantly on that side, especially in key situations, with little to no success. In this SB, the Steelers had either back ups or sick players on the opposite side, yet the Vikings operated to their right. It seemed like all of the Vikings SB opponents were in the huddle with them, they were that well prepared.

That was devastating. If you look a few seconds before, Tarkenton had excellent protection. No reason for him to thro it high. Gilliam played with a fractured wrist, have zoomed in on the play, he never had it. As he was coming down from his leap, he was bobbling it then WHAM ! This hit was about as hard as Tatums on Sammy White, minus the helmet coming off.
@chriserrington59586 жыл бұрын
Tarkenton said pain killers for his arm soreness that season caused him to lose some of the feeling in the arm. That's why he said he was throwing high all season. Just before Fred Cox missed a field goal (following a second quarter recovered fumble), Tark also threw too high to an open Foreman at the 5-yard line. Would have given Minnesota a chance to score the first touchdown. In the end, Pittsburgh was clearly the better team and the deserved champions.

The first SB safety IX: 7:35 Another safety would come in the next SB X, but not another safety for 10 more SBs XX, with another safety the next year XXI. Stranger still, there would be safeties in three consecutive SBs: XLVI, XLVII and XLVIII.

+Don Mueller Also a first blocked punt in SB IX as well as another one in SB X. Both players , Matt Blair and Reggie Harrison where roomates at Iowa State. In SB XI, FRed McNeil blocked one as well. Also Blairs roomate while in Minnesota.

It was not a fumble. He was down before the ball came out.

One of only two cold weather Super Bowls with Super Bowl XLVIII being the other. This one was definitely unplanned however. Makes you wonder how New Orleans could've screwed the pooch and had the Superdome incomplete and why the NFL didn't have a contingency plan that didn't include a decrepit college stadium. Like the ol' Virginia Slims tagline in regards to the NFL, "You've come a long way baby".

+Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot In the pregame, they make mention of The Superdome not budgeting for the seats LMAO!

+Manu Ginobilis Bald Spot I think it was appropriate that the Steelers won their first Super Bowl in the cold (coldish) weather.

This , right here is the view needed to make the correct call 17:21. Ed Marion had THIS view here 17:27, no way could he see what happened.

Fred Marion saw the back of Larry Brown, no way could he have seen enough to overturn the play. Watch him here when he trots onto the scene 17:39

He was directly across the field from Brown when he was tackled

boy, it seems clear to me that it was not a fumble. his butt hit the ground, then it started going loose. and I have no dog in this race.
@6400az Жыл бұрын
@@GQElvie Watch ball is coming out one frame before Brown hits the turf. Still, Marion only saw the back part of Brown, absolutely not enough evidence to overturn. Zoom in and slo mo, you'll see it 17:26

My god, the Vikings. Poor bastards. They're the Buffalo Bills of the 60's and 70's.

Imagine in an era of no replay....the refs get an A+ on a controversial call. The Larry Brown fumble overturned by a ref with the right vantage point.
