Sports is not the same today. The players maybe more athletic but they didn’t play as hard as the old greats. It was funny to hear Alex Karras talk about a Minnesota offensive lineman making $75,000 so they should be able to open that fourth and one play. It’s great stuff. This game took place about 15 minutes from where I lived in Burnsville, Minn. I was 6 going on 7 years old during the 1976 Season. Maybe the 1st that I recall watching game to game. This would be the last Vikings team to appear in the Super Bowl. This game featured close to 20 future Hall of Famers. And few that should be in the HOF. Namely Jim Marshall, Wally Hilgenberg, Matt Blair, Bobby Bryant. The Steel Curtain was at the top of it's game in '76. Holding 8 opponents to single digit points. Shutting out 5 teams. A field full of legends on both sides. And I do think that looked like Farrah Fawcett in the commercial. And speaking of legends: Salute to Bud Grant.
@markgardner9460

It was shocking to me to see the Vikes run up and down the field against the vaunted Steel Curtain when they were totally stonewalled in the Super Bowl. As Bud Grant was fond of saying about Super Bowls: It's just one game. It's not like baseball where you play a 7 game series.

@@markgardner9460 It was the very brief greatness of Chuck Foreman. #44 was such an unstoppable offensive weapon. He was the very definition of all-purpose. This looked like his revenge game after SB IX. Talk about what might've been if he had a longer career.

I remember watching that episode. It was just a short time after losing SB XI. During the opening monologue he made a joke about someone asking him if they wanted to cancel his appearance after the game. He said they called him at halftime. He also made an appearance on the Donnie and Marie show, along with Ken Stabler, either shortly before or after SB XI. When pressed to admit who he was cheering for, Stabler reached down and pulled up Donnie's pant leg to reveal a purple sock. Purple socks were apparently his trademark at the time.

Short of winning a SB, the Vikes had to have found some gratification in winning rematches by routs against the Chiefs (1970 and 1974) and decisively beating the Dolphins and Steelers in 1976. After this season, however, they lost rematches with the Raiders in Oakland, 27-20 and 35-13.

@@markgardner9460 I can still remember Cox missing that extra point on their second TD in garbage time. Shocking!?!?! Strange that they would be intimidated playing Oakland for the third time in three seasons, as the Raiders had declined just as rapidly, going 9-7 in 1978. The Raiders retooled superbly to win SB's in 1980 and 1983., Minnesota squeezed out a couple more playoff appearances but couldn't get back to the NFC Title Game. Still remember Minnesota jumping out to an early 14-7 lead on the Eagles in the 1980 divisional round, but from that point onward, Philly's superior talent, depth and youth wore the Vikes down, 24-2 over the rest of the game.

Rashad was a big part of the Vikes offense, but the Raiders DB's totally eliminated him from the equation because he was a whimp and was intimidated by their brand of rough house tactics. '76 was his first year with the Vikes, as was Sammy White since he was a rookie that year.

@@markgardner9460 It's hard to see how a backup would have had one iota more success against the Steel Curtain monsters that day, when a Pro Bowl QB like Tarkenton with 14 years experience was running for his life. But maybe it could have given the Vikes offense a spark and confused Pittsburgh's D as a QB they hadn't planned for. Did Berry have anything going for him Tarkenton didn't, like Norris Weese's speed replacing Craig Morton 1n SB 12.

@@markgardner9460 I don't get how the Vikes could allow Marshall to hurt the team by being so skinny. Was he planning for his future post career health by being a linebacker on the front line? Was it better for him to be thin skydiving (LOL!). I believe Page was similarly undersized as well. Great speed for sideline to sideline pursuit but did they ever get bulldozed in the SB's. To be fair, however, the Steelers, Dolphins and Raiders had dynastic quality offensive lines and the Chiefs were wildly underrated given how big and brutal they were on both lines. Its not like most other playoff victims of these four teams did better. KC dominated Oakland in the AFL Title Game, Miami ran over the Bengals and Raiders by similar scores, Pittsburgh bludgeoned the Bills and Raiders and Oakland used the Steel Curtain as a door mat in 1976.

While it was played in different years, this is another example of Grant having the Vikings better prepared in the regular season than in the Super Bowls. Super Bowl 4 had the Chiefs whip the Vikes 23-7, and everyone said it was because the Chiefs had much better talent, yet just 9 months later, the Vikes whip the Chiefs on opening day 1970, 27-10. In 1972, Miami beats the Vikes on a last second TD pass, 16-14, yet a year later in the Super Bowl, Miami crushes the Vikes, 24-7. Opening day 1973, the Vikes whip the Raiders 24-16, yet a few years later in 1976, the Raiders crush the Vikes, 32-14. Why couldn't Grant devise the proper game plans for the Super Bowls?

Steelers Kicker Roy Gerela was born in a small hamlet in Northern Alberta called Sarrail. It's so small, that doesn't exist even on a road map or Google Earth anymore. The only information I found on Google about Sarrail was about a Ukrainian Orthodox Church that claims to be located there. Alex Karras was the other colour commentator along with Cosell. Most people would associate the former Detroit Lion HOFer from Blazing Saddles or Webster. It's still strange to watch a sporting event where a large shopping centre with an indoor amusement park presently sits for over 30 years. Jim Clack was the GIants center two years later who snapped the ball to Joe Piscarcik late in the 4th Quarter vs. Philadelphia and we all know what happened at the Meadowlands. 'The new Cougar XR-7. Available at the sign of the cat!! (Cougar growls on top of Lincoln Mercury sign)' The Cougar most times was Mercury's equivalent of the Ford Thunderbird, except for the first generation which was the equivalent of the Mustang (My parents had a 1967 Cougar for four years before I was born) 15:22 - There are those mattresses again from the Motel 6 down the street. You can see which team made it to the Super Bowl that season. Again, I said 'made it to the Super Bowl'.

Love your comments! Deep digging on Gerela. Took way too long for Karras to get inducted into the HOF (induct these guys when they're somewhat young, so they can enjoy it. Few things are worse that posthumous induction ceremonies, in my opinion). GREAT point about Jim Clack - I didn't even think of that. You'd think that they'd at least get new mattresses for a Monday Night Football game. It is being viewed nationwide after all.

The Sporting News 1977 National Football Guide states that "Grant of the Vikings switched quarterbacks in the second half, going to Bob Lee as a replacement for Fran Tarkenton". There is no mention of an injury. Fran had not generated any points in the first half and only had 47 yards passing. Close or not, Grant had no reservations of pulling Tarkenton in the Super Bowl versus the Raiders, so I think that Fran pouted about being pulled and Grant disciplined him for it. It's just my opinion, but I have not read or seen any evidence of an injury. Van Brocklin sat Tarkenton for pouting or arguing extensively prior to a game that was played in Tarkenton's home state against the Falcons earlier in his career. Tarkenton had a temper.

If the game had been in Pittsburgh then perhaps some measure of revenge. There is an interesting comparison that most would not realize the score 17-6 versus the SB IX loss 16-6. Sadly, for the Vikings this was the year of the Raiders as they would find out 13 games later.

I disagree with avenging the 16 - 6 Superbowl loss with a regular season win against the Steelers. You only avenge a Super Bowl loss with a Super Bowl win as the Dallas Cowboys did in Super Bowl Vi against the Miami Dolphins 24 - 3 after their Super Bowl loss in Super Bowl V to the Baltimore Colts 16 - 13. Although the win came against a different team. The bottom line is in Super Bowl XI, for the 1976 season, the Vikings lost to the Oakland Raiders 32 - 14. The entire two weeks prior to that Super Bowl I was calling the Raiders the Chokeland Raiders, and consequently, it became the Minnechoka Vikings. I loved Fran Tarkenton as a kid, but he had terrible stats in the most important games of his career.

In Fran's defense, it's difficult to pass when you don't have an effective game in any of the 3 Super Bowls in which he played..............and his defenses couldn't stop the run to save their souls, so he was passing out of wells.

@@markgardner9460 I'll somewhat agree with the 3 Superbowls, but his defenses kept the Coboys in the 1973 NFC Championship Game to 10 points, the Rams in the 1974 NFC Championship Game to 10 points, and the Rams in the 1976 Championship Game to 13 points, and his stats still weren't good for those games. I'll agree concerning the 1977 Championship Game because the Cowboys scored 23 points. However, they always seemed to beat the Steelers and Raiders during the regular season but not in the Super Bowl. I also blame Bud Grant for his inability to have his team prepared in the 1st half and his lack of adjusting at Half Time. As you pointed out in your previous comment, the Vikings were outscored 51 - 0 in the 1st half of their Super Bowl appearances. That's a serious problem. IMO, the Vikings should have beaten the Steelers and the Raiders in Super Bowls IX and XI. To score only 6 points against the Steelers on a blocked punt and then not be able to convert the PAT is a disgrace. Then they block Ray Guy's punt and are ready to score a touchdown on the 2-yard line and then Foreman fumbled the ball. I knew the game was over at that point when the Raiders went down the field and kicked a field goal. That's how fortunes and momentum can change on a dime. instead of it being 7 - 0 Vikings, it was 3 - 0 Raiders. In the 1976 NFC Championship Game, instead of 3 - 0 Rams, Bobby Bryant blocked the field goal and the Vikings returned it for a Touchdown and were up 7 - 0. I knew the Vikings were going to the Super Bowl despite the Rams coming back from 17 - 0 to make it 17 - 13 and then going on to win 24 - 13. In fact, I knew the Vikings were going to the Super Bowl when the Rams beat the Cowboys 14 - 12 in the divisional playoffs the week before. The Cowboys matched up better against the Vikings that year. If Tarkenton had been in Super Bowl IV against the Chiefs, I don't think the outcome would have been different. We'll never know. It's a shame really that Bud Grant and Fran Tarkentton are the best coach and QB tandem the Vikings ever had and no coach and QB tandem have been able to get back to the Super Bowl. The only other QB to get to the Super Bowl was Joe Capp. Enough said, thanks for your comments.

@@edg4441 The weather didn't do the Vikes any favors. It was only 47 degrees at Houston versus the Dolphins. It was only 51 degrees with a 17 mph wind in New Orleans versus the Steelers. The Vikes were a passing team, so the weather adversely affected them far more than Miami and Pitt who were hard core running teams. The game in New Orleans was to be played in the Super Dome, but the venue had to be changed when construction of the Super Dome was delated. Play that game there, then I will agree with you that the Vikes would have one. Also, Vike RB's Reed, McClanahan and Foreman all fumbled near the goal line in separate Super Bowls that Tarkenton played. Those are huge obstacles for a QB to overcome when your defense can't stop anyone.

@@markgardner9460 Great teams win regardless of the conditions. Unlike Vince Lombardi, Bud Grant should have had a game plan to battle the elements. H didn't. He didn't adjust nor did his teams. I'm not going to debate these losses, they lost and that's how History will remember the Minnesota Vikings from 1969 to 1976. Tarkenton's stats from the 4 NFC championship games speak volumes. I used to defend the Vikings in my youth to my 40s, but in the end, revisiting the games through KZbin, the Vikings were a good team, but NOT a great team. Just like the Buffalo Bills. If Norwood would have made the field goal in Super Bowl XXV, the Bills teams from Super Bowls XXV to XXVIII would have been considered one of the greatest teams of all time. Unfortunately, he missed the field goal and they have the same distinction as the Vikings. As I stated before only Elway was able to overcome his three losses and win two Super Bowls. Unfortunately for Levy and Kelly and Grant and Tarkenton, they didn't. Thanks again.
